Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

What a huge disappointment... I had read the reviews prior and thought I would make my own mind up as I hate leaving negative reviews but this has to be the biggest let down.
You park right at the entrance and with 30 seconds you have seen it all, one big square and 2 or 3 plaques of info. We ended up going for a big walk to make up for the time we thought we would be spending at the ruins.
This place could be made so much more interesting in many ways.

Not far off the main road with kerb parking. No charge to walk around grounds. Very well maintained ‘ruin’ which goes back to around 1300ad. Interesting stonework and a newish wall built around 1850 which seemingly did not meet with with Queen Victoria’s approval. Well kept ground areas.

There’s not a great deal left of the castle other than the four walls and four corner towers. You can walk around it and inside it - but you’ll be done in under five minutes. Still, it’s great to see it still standing.

Although it was not open to walk around the inside. Just getting to see the outside was delightful. I would love to have gone inside, but understand the delicate condition of the aging structure and that safety is of the utmost importance. The castle and its history just added to the charm of Fort William. We'll be back!

We’re frequent visitors to the area but for some reason had never visited this castle. One of the best preserved mediaeval castles in Scotland and unaltered since the 1280s. Very impressive indeed. I see that some reviewers complain about the lack of signage and facilities. Yes I think that more could be made of the site and it feels a bit forgotten which is odd given its importance in Scottish history and the number of tourists to this area.
Could be visited as part of a walk from Caol or a cycle from Fort Bill

Unfortunately the castle (which is ruined) is closed for falling boulders. It is fenced and you can only see the outside of the walls. If you are passing through it is worth a visit. Nearby there is a bar with a soap and perfume shop do a famous Scottish factory

Lovely old castle to view but unfortunelty the barriers are up aroound the castle so you can't enter. The usual notice as with most historic Scotland sites at the moment is that they are doing repairs but as usual never anythign happening. At the moment I would go and see it if you are nearby for something else but would not make a special visit.

Not far from Ben Nevis is Inverlochy Castle. I've seen quite a few castles but this one was pretty cool. Not the most impressive castle in either size or grandeur (it's just the ruins that are left of the castle), but as it was abandoned during the Scottish Wars of Independence (1296-1357) it is easy to imagine what it looked like when it was built around 1270. Generally it seems like castles were expanded upon or modernized from defensive fortresses to residences, but this one sits just as it was in medieval times. Inverlochy Castle belonged to Clan Comyn who were rivals of the famous king of Scotland, Robert the Bruce, and were nearly completely wiped out as a result. The castle is exactly what a kid would draw if you asked them to draw a typical castle. It is a square with a tower at each corner, surrounded by a moat (now dry). From a historical perspective, it was neat to see a typical, simple medieval castle. You can see it all in less than an hour, but it's definitely worth the time. I posted more info and photos on my travel blog at:

We hadn’t planned to stop here, but saw the sign for the castle and thought we would. This was a quick stop as the castle itself is fairly small and partly in ruins. We enjoyed walking around and taking pictures. The castle is on the river and in town.

Between Fort William and the new Inverlochy castle there are the ruins of the old one
Near the river it’s a very short walk from the parking

Google will tell you all the details but there are different busses going from Fort William. You get off the bus at British Aluminium and you'll have to walk about 6 minutes from the bus stop to the site.
If you enjoy walking it's also within walking distance from Fort William.
