Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

I'm not sure how we reached the place as we were just walking along the shore, but what a lovely surprise find such a nice place so close to Inverness city centre.
In the area there are some paths along wood and pools where is possible to spot wildlife, we spotted ducks and grey herons but if you are lucky you can spot kingfisher too.
The real highlight tought is the path facing the Moray firth who shows his best potential at low tide when plenty of birds come to feed and it's possible to spot oystercatchers, swans ,curlew, geese , ducks and so on.
Well worth a visit.

Just a short distance from the centre of Inverness is the Merkinch Nature reserve. This is a must for lovers of Birds, especially water birds. The reserve is well managed with a very good path through the reserve. On one side of the path you have the sea shore with oyster catchers, herons, curlews with many other birds depending on the season. There is a thoughtful seat halfway along the path for those that like to just stop and stare. On the other side of the path there is a rough bit of ground with shrubs and trees. This also attracts many birds and small mammals. As you get towards the canal end there is a good size pond with many ducks. I don't want to say too much about the many reasons to come here because its a place to explore and find out for yourself. Congratulations to the people that manage this wonderful place with a great website as well.

This is not a nature reserve ! The small area at the mouth of the river with a path around is littered with cans, empty packets & its full of dead trees. Calling it a Nature Reserve really stretches the imagination.
Please tidy this area up - provide bins, voluntary watdens- it need love not litter !

This nature reserve is located at approx. 20 min. walk from the center of Inverness, on the north-west of the city near the harbour. There is a path leading sometimes within the reserve and sometimes along its border. It is possible to see various types of finches (goldfinch and bullfinch for example), as well as various types of water birds (oystercatcher, herring gull, great black-backed gull, grey heron). The farthest corner of the reserve connects to the water gates of Inverness, a plave witha tremendous view of the bay, where you can spot the occasional wild duck with ducklings sheltering among the gates against the worst of the tides. The reseve and water gates are a suggestive part of a longer trail of Inverness water ways thatconnects furthes west and south with the canal and the river Ness. Don't miss it.

Local people and professionals have come together to create a fabulous, abundant and beautiful nature reserve in a an area of Inverness off the the tourist track and usually thought of as more run down. It is worth a visit as some rare gems are to be found there and it's a fine example of a wildlife retreat for any town or city. Well done to everyone involved and thanks!

We were walking along the Canal from the Titanic Museum and spotted the signs for the Nature Reserve. We needed to have our late lunch and spent an enjoyable time watching the oyster catchers and other birds whilst sitting at a picnic table down near the pool. We obviously missed seeing many of the delights of the Reserve because we were unadventurous and a bit tired but have promised ourselves to revisit it, armed with nature guides... and more food and drink to spend few hours. It is obviously popular with dog walkers too.

Maybe we were there at the wrong time, I'm sure the place looks different at high tide. We saw some birds (sorry, I don't know the species, but see the photo), and had a leisurely walk around. One tip: if you want to reach the place by public transport, do not believe Google, there is only one bus that serves the area, No7. It goes from the city centre every 30 minutes. However, plan the outing for the morning or early afternoon, since the last bus back goes around 6pm.
