Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

If part of the name of the city is named after the river, you should pay some attention to De Ness. It is a good plan to visit the Ness Islands anyway, but walking along the Ness is fun. Or find a bar overlooking the Ness. Maybe not the biggest Attraction, but still beautiful! Definitely worth it.

Inverness is a lovely city and one of its highlights has to be this picturesque river with its bridges crossing. We parked on the opposite side and wandered across the bridge and there are magnificent views both ways to be seen. There are walks alongside the river with plenty of seating to while away the day..

The river divides the city in two. There are many bridges, some pedestrian from which you can enjoy great views. Walking along the banks is relaxing and you get to a park made of islets. In nature within walking distance of the city. Really not to be missed

Visited Inverness and fell in love with the city in a big way. The river wends it's way through the centre and beyond. Very relaxing, extremely beautiful and a lovely way to take your mind off the rigours of life. Find a quiet spot, watch the birds making their living off the water and feel life's stresses ebbing away. The riverside walks are simply lovely and you wont want to stop your wander.

We hiked upstream to the Ness Islands. The water in the Ness is brownish in color (probably coming from the moors), but is crystal clear. You can see the bottom with its big pebbles. The Ness Islands are a real recreation area.

We stayed in Inverness for a week and were able to walk along the river on both sides. We arrived in a Train from Edinburgh. After a couple of days we were able to orient ourselves to the city by relating it to the river. Going about a mile upriver there is a wonderful woods areato walk thru, which also has the Inverness Botanic Gardens across the river.

Really nice hotel, surroundings and rooms and I have stayed previously. Arrived on Sunday afternoon 10th March to find out they had no running water. Really disappointed as I had been travelling for several hours only to be told that it would be the next day before it would be looked. Then I was surprised to hear that there was no refund or partial refund for this inconvenience. A few drinks would have gone a long way. Nice hotel all the same.

Visited Inverness for 2 nights in May 2023. The river runs through the city and is easily reached from anywhere in town. Well marked trails on both sides of the River with pedestrian bridges to both sides and the little islands in the middle of the river. Stop along the way to see St Andrews Cathedral, the Inverness Botanical garden, the statue of the 3 Graces and the distillery/brewery. Grab an ice cream or snack from one of the food trucks. Revel in the natural beauty of the trail/ riverwalk

River Ness and Ness Islands are beautiful day and night.
Whilst walking around the islands we found a little sculpture of a leaf man, which was really cute.
Then walking back over there was the town and castle in the background.
On the night time the river is lit up and castle is just stunning.
Very peaceful walk and I will definitely return.

The perfect experience. The castle is closed for renovations and there's an admissions charge to the cathedral, so it being a rare warm sunny day, we decided to walk up to the islands. An excellent choice, with quiet private benches on which to sit and just listen to the river and birds. Perfect for a picnic if you're so inclined (and with many nearby groceries from which to stock up). Tall evergreens and beech trees provide shade for much of the walk and there's no question that you will leave most of the tourist traffic behind.

Hello, I'm interested in doing the river island walk I've read about - anyone done this and how long should it take? Also is there a map anyone used and found useful or is it pretty easy? Thank you :)

If you mean walking around ness islands, then it's as long as you like, you could speedwalk through them in ten mins, or stroll through in a couple of hours. We started on the south side of the river in town, walked along the river, crossed onto the islands, and then played crazy golf on the north side and walked further on to whin park for the kids to play, then walked back along north side to Inverness town past cathedral. Probably spent 3-4 hours doing all that. It's a truly stunning part of the world. Would loved to have done it at night, it's got lights all around the paths apparently. It's very clean too
