    Well worth a visit
We initially only chose to visit the Museum & Art Gallery to escape the rain! However, we found the collections varied and interesting. Plenty to keep us occupied for well over 2 hours. We enjoyed having a coffee and scone in the cafe too.

    Superb
Small but perfectly formed! Popped in during one of my many visits, as it's a place I had always meant to see. And I wasn't disappointed. Might not be the biggest museum you'll ever see, but the staff were very enthusiastic, and the exhibits painted a very interesting picture of local history over the millennia. Speaking of paintings, they also feature a lot of work by local artists. A return visit is planned.
We're so pleased you popped in past and found loads of interest to you. Thank you for leaving us such a great review, and we'll look forward to welcoming you again...

    Great little place
We were met at the door by a lovely woman asking us if we needed to leave our bags (we did, they were heavy!) and she immediately gave us all the info we needed about what was where. It’s not a huge museum but it’s well laid out and has some really interesting stuff. Good puzzles for kids. Everyone we spoke to was a delight. Well worth a donation.
Thank you very much for leaving us such positive feedback - we're so glad you felt welcomed, and enjoyed your visit with us! :)

A great introduction to the history and culture of Inverness and the highlands
A small museum that manages to cover a lot of history of Inverness and the highlands, from prehistoric times to modern history. There are plenty of interesting artifacts: from fossils, Bronze Age burial beakers, Pictish carvings, all the way up to rare new fiddle/violin designs. There are plenty of interactive options for children and information is clear, thorough, but easy for them to follow along with as well. The small gallery space upstairs had a wonderful exhibition reflecting on the way we connected during COVID.
We’re so pleased to hear that you enjoyed your visit to Inverness Museum and Art Gallery. Thank you for taking the time to tell us about your positive experience. Safe travels!

Free museum,do give a donation as its well worth it
Great free museum. Small museum but loads of well laid out displays. Starts with the geology of the Highlands, loads about the bronze and iron age people and culture, local floral and fauna as well as plenty about the more recent ( ie last 2000 Yr) history of the area. Friendly staff, small gift shop, toilet, and cafe. Also, a small art gallery. Can easily pass well over an hour exploring the information on offer.

    Fantastic Museum and Art Gallery
A fabulous, small museum and gallery. Gives a fantastic, overview of the history of Scotland’s natural formation and its wildlife. The human history is covered succinctly and is truly enjoyable. You do not come away overwhelmed, just we’ll informed. Noted that there were fantastic interactive activities for children or adults if you wish! Being able to feel the fur of badgers, pine martens and otters was a delight! Congratulations Inverness Museum and Art Gallery, you have a lovely place and very welcoming staff!

    Gem of a museum
Definitely check out this gem of a museum. It is informative and easy to navigate without needing hours of time for a proper visit. The exhibits are interesting and varied. I had a much better understanding of Inverness/Caledonian Canal/Highlands after my time there. I even saw a Pine Marten a couple of days later and knew what it was thanks to the museum’s wildlife displays.
Thank you very much for your wonderful review! We’re delighted you enjoyed your visit to Inverness Museum and Art Gallery and look forward to seeing you again!

Wow, what a pleasant surprise this museum and art gallery was. I have visited many a similar place and can honest say, the Inverness Museum and Art Gallery is up there with my very few favourites. Right from the start, the museum feels an air of quality in what it offers in terms of knowledge. My children were not with me on this trip but rest assured, if they were all of them would have taken something away from this visit.

And, what's more, it's free to enter. It's on two levels (with a lift if need be) and fully accessible by all. The cafe inside was great too and a nice place to sit and relax. I would also recommend a good two hour if not more allowance on time to see the amazing exhibits...nothing fake here, it's a true museum in every sense of the word :)

More than thoroughly recommended if visiting Inverness.

visited this museum by chance as we had a couple of hours to spare and so glad we did. The museum is well laid out across two floors with the first floor displaying artwork and photographs taken by local artists. The ground floor consisted of interesting geological displays of how Scotland was formed millions of years ago. The displays then progress to the history of human habitation and also the local wildlife past and present. An excellent museum.

Lovely welcome from the lady at the entrance, and a very informative museum. I wanted specifically to see the gallery exhibition of female photographers and that was very good. I would put the upstairs part of the museum downstairs, because it was more recent history and looked more interesting than the geological prehistory downstairs - but I imagine a lot of people do what we did and automatically start downstairs and run out of steam before they get upstairs.

The most annoying part of our visit was not being able to properly look at the amazing hand drawn and beautiful map of Inverness displayed in the cafe because a member of staff was sitting on her laptop in front of it! She could have sat anywhere in the cafe but did not budge, even though we were obviously trying to look at the intricate map. Very weird of her, and rude.

We're so glad that you found your welcome to the museum warm, and that your visit was informative. We take on board your comments about access to the map in the cafe and we will bear this in mind for future. Apologies for the disappointment.

It’s worth the effort to find this thoughtful museum. It’s up 2 sets of stairs above Church St. We really liked the fish fossils, history and then the art upstairs. It was especially fun to see the excitement of kids. There’s little toy surprises for the youngest ones in the display cases to engage them while the parents read the info and some hands-on microscopes that work and puzzles, too. When the sweet child kissed the stuffed otter and giggled, I was smitten.

During our visit to "The capital of the Highlands" we couldn't leave without visiting the Inverness Museum.

The location is very central and the museum itself is very informative about Scottish history, the local wildlife and the characters that have made Scotland what it is today.

Would definitely recommend

Spent well over two hours in the museum, covering all ages from prehistoric to modern day. Very interesting sections on Jacobite rebellion and the silver trade. Free entry although donations welcome. The art gallery was bit modern for my taste.

This was a great way to spend 2 hours.
I especially liked the geology and early aspects of the local history; I like rocks and dinosaurs (!), local wildlife and the history up to about the introduction of Christianity, whereas my wife is more into later history e.g. Jacobites and beyond, so there’s plenty for everyone, regardless of age. There was a Primary school party in simultaneously and they were having a ball.

We live in Inverness and have visited the museum in the past and as the grandchildren was staying we though we would take them along. It was so good. It had me staying well over two hours. The artefacts were beautiful with their histories, it had me enthralled. It’s well worth the visit and there was a wee “find the hidden highland cows” for the kids. They loved it and want to go back tomorrow. Lovely wee cafe to suit everyone’s tastes and a wee gift shop to boot. We’ll definitely be back

We had an enjoyable time exploring the museum. There were lots of interactive aspects such as use of a microscope to look at squirrel teeth, shells and feathers, and wooden puzzles which my son enjoyed.
It was interesting to see the world war memorabilia and also the stone carvings. The art gallery had interesting examples from a range of Scottish artists. I particularly enjoyed the amateur art pieces from the classes held at the museum. It was perfect for a rainy day in Inverness. There is also a cafe and gift shop. We were happy with the recommendation to visit.
