- Anonymous159 contributionsA quick trip through timeDespite being recently refurbished to reproduce its original appearance, you will feel like you've stepped back in time at Provand's Lordship. A small yet quirky historical house with a lovely little garden at the back, perfect for a short visit. There isn't a great deal to learn but it's worth a visit - but be mindful of the low ceilings and doorways! To frenchtoastfan, thank you for taking the time to leave a review of Provand's Lordship. - Rachel H300 contributionsHISTORICAL MEDIEVAL HOUSE IN GLASGOWThis is a surprisingly lesser known gem in central Glasgow. In fact, I had no idea and it wasn't on my list of places to visit, but I was so glad I did. It is situated opposite Glasgow Cathedral and is an historical medieval house which is now a museum and restored to what it was like in the 15-16th century. It is associated with Mary Queen of Scots as well. It's free and less touristy than some other places but well worth a short visit. To adelaidegirl70, thank you for your review of Provand's Lordship. Very close to the cathedral so it's easy to combine with that. It’s a quick visit as it's quite small and there isn’t much to see inside. But we enjoyed our half hour wandering around and we were glad we popped in. Free entry and friendly, informative guide. The small herb garden out back is peaceful and worth a visit too.To JN65, thank you for taking the time to visit Provand's Lordship and for leaving us a review. On our way to Glasgow Cathedral, we passed this quaint little old house, which my friend suggested we visit. The house was built in 1471 and is one of four surviving mediaeval buildings in Glasgow. It is essentially a small museum of Glasgow. Interesting enough in its own way but we didn’t feel inclined to spend more than half an hour there.

I have visited here on many occasions and have always learned something new. On this visit I looked for information about Calton and Bridgeton as I was born, lived and attended primary school in the area. Will pay another visit when time permits.

Provand’s Lordship is the oldest building in Glasgow. It was built in 1471 as part of St Nicholas’s Hospital by Andrew Muirhead, Bishop of Glasgow. The building’s name is derived from a clergyman known as the ‘Lord of the Prebend of Balernock’ who lived here later. His name was corrupted to ‘Lord Provan’. Today it is a museum, displaying a great collection of 17th century furniture. Personally, I was a bit disappointed, because the site could easily double as a Health And Safety Exhibition. Black’n’Yellow Tape on every doorframe, Fire Extinguishers and “Do not Touch” signs litter the entire interior to the extent where even MY imagination couldn’t quite overlook them. I have to admit that, in order to take pictures, I removed the most obtrusive signs without further ado, and carefully put them back afterwards.
The garden is advertised as a tranquil medieval garden displaying 15th century medicinal herbs as they might have been used at the time. It was built in 1997, so I was well aware that it would be a 'new' medieval garden. There is a beautiful renaissance knot garden with a fountain. The design is from the 16th century and reached its height of popularity in the 17th and 18th century, when they became the most-used design in formal baroque gardening, adopted in almost all palace and castle grounds. But not quite your domestic 15th century herb garden.
The house and garden are beautiful in themselves, so if you're in Glasgow you should not miss it.

A very interesting building - if walls could talk. Very helpful staff who took trouble to explain the history to us.

A fantastic way to find out about our history with Queen Mary, Henry the 8th and many many more. Staff have a wealth of knowledge and loads of information on hand too. the low ceilings and narrow staircase is exactly as it used to be, with original furnishings and paintings, and its all free. The Gardens are full of herbs that would have once been used in the Glasgow royal which is across the road. A must for everybody visiting our dear Green Place.

Takes about a hour to wander round this beautiful old house, one of the oldest in Glasgow. It contains some original period furniture and gives a glimpse into past times. No entry charge
