Overview
More
Masterfully designed by Alexander 'Greek' Thomson, Holmwood is a family home with grand imagination behind it. Cupolas, columns and floor-to-ceiling windows exude elegance, while the bold opulent decoration echoes the colours found in ancient Greek temples. 2017 is Thomson's bicentennial year. The property is celebrating this through a year long special events programme, check the NTS website for details. Recent recreation of the magnificent original stencil decorative scheme in the Dining room allows appreciation of the intended vision of Thomson and on going work to continue the recreation will be progressing throughout 2017.

We visited Holmwood with the Art Society. Very good experience of house and interesting guide but the house was full of Halloween tat which might have been cleared away for our prebooked visit. Clearance would not have taken very long!More

I throughly enjoyed my time her with my volunteer guide and left with the impression that this is the finest and most elaborate residential villa designed by the Scottish architect Alexander Thomson as one could hope to see.

A really interesting tour of the house with some fascinating conservation work still underway. A must see if you're interested in Alexander "Greek" Thomson. Our guide, Iain McGillivray, was really knowledgeable and gave us a great insight into the house and history.

Before Charles Rennie Mackintosh there was another Glasgow architect who designed, not only beautiful houses but all the interior decoration. This is the best example of his domestic design. The house itself is in a magnificent setting but once inside the detail is amazing. It...More

This is a nice diversion if you are near Glasgow. It would be good to combine with a visit to the Burrell Collection which is not far away. The House is not large with two bedrooms, drawing room and dining room on show but it...More
