If you are passing from the car park at the Golf Museum or visiting the Aquarium it would be worth a peep past and to read the info board. I don't think i would make a special visit as it is a quite standard monument otherwise. Built for religious martyrs from the past.

Protestant Martyrs

Sept 2020

This obelisk monument was built to honour the Protestant martyrs during the turmoil of the 16th century reformation. Specifically the monument is for the 4 men condemned to death by fire. Those men were Patrick Hamilton, Henry Forest, George Wishart, and Walter Myln.

Memorialising a Scottish historical highlight

It's a simple stone obelisk, prominently positioned in a site of the highest historical sensitivity. The Old Course lies just at its feet. The ruined castle and cathedral stand just behind. The most ancient of Scotland's universities broods nearby. The inscribed plaque remembers Patrick Hamilton, Henry Forest, George Wishart and Walter Myln who were executed by fire at the stake between 1527 and 1558 for supporting Protestantism before the reformation of 1560.. The poignancy is palpable.

Martyrs' Monument

Martyrs' Monument in St Andrews, is located nearby to West Sands Beach, close to the Bandstand. It is there to commemorate protestant martyrs. Also lovely view of West Sands Beach from that spot.

Very beautiful area.

In a goog weather you can walk all the street from St. Andrews cathedral to here and admire the beauty of this village.Near the monument there are gold fields and some Coffee place to drink sth and take a rest inside or outside of the weather permits.

Historic monument on a beautiful spot

You are bound to walk past it if you park at the aquarium and heading for West Sand Beach. The obelisk commemorates Patrick Hamilton and three other protestant martyrs.

Aside from the historical poignance of the monument as detailed in other reviews, the views from here out over West Sands and the sea are extraordinary. There are well-placed benches near the monument on which you could while away hours on a nice day.

Moment of reflection

Commemorating all those who died for their Protestant beliefs, this monument overlooks the West Sands . Take a moment to sit on the benches and reflect upon the price paid for religious freedom.
The West Sands is the beach whereto characters in the Chariots of Fire run. This movie was produced by Dodi Al Fayed, who was tragically killed in a car accident with Princess Diana.

I passed this monument on my walk down towards the West Sands.
Built to commemorate a number of Protestant figures who were martyred in St Andrews between 1520 and 1560.
The monument stands in a very peaceful location overlooking the West Sands and the famous Old Course.
A scenic walk, some benches situated nearby and a bandstand down below.

Located high above West Sands and just outside the Hotel du Vin, this monument gives testament to the religious convictions of martyrs for religious freedom. Take a moment and see it or visit and reflect for as long as you like.
