We planned ahead and bought Jacobite Packages before our trip. The evening commenced with a great dinner in the Castle and a walk down to the parade grounds for the "show." In reality this was a collection of parades spanning the globe in completely surprising...More

This is an annual event in Edinburgh during the festival, a must see. Highly recommended. Performers from different commonwealth countries. Held outdoors at Edinburgh castle. Make sure you take a rain coat/umbrella, just incase.

Fantastic show well organised from the approach on the royal mile to when you are all herded out. Seat choice is important, the east seats being the better view. Be aware of the steep steps. Take a cushion !

Went with my parents from Australia and it was one of the highlights of their trip. Had my miserable wife there at the time and even that didn't dampen the spirit of the tattoo, simply awesome.

Few Edinburghers live in the Old Town, but its
labyrinth of dank alleys and steep streets suggests
this was not always the case. Today, it’s mostly
visitors, tartan-flavoured souvenir shops, and pipers
that you’ll find on its cobbled streets. This is the
place to get a feel for Auld Reekie (Old Smelly), as
the town was once nicknamed, and stroll the Royal
Mile, the thoroughfare that links the castle with the

Please clarify for me what you can take in to the Tattoo. I have read on TA to bring blanket , cushion, jacket, raincoat , plastic poncho and umbrella. But I have also read that umbrellas are not allowed. I was thinking of bringing a backpack for the extra layers but I read there is a bag check at entry. I am not sure if that means you must leave your bags there or that the bags are searched. Would a long sleeve tee shirt, fleece jacket and waterproof raincoat be enough layers or do I need a down jacket also? Thanks so much.

Bags get checked but can be taken with you. No umbrellas but the idea you have of the layers is good. I say definitely bring raincoat

I just confirmed tickets to the Tattoo for August 14. I will be travelling with my 14 year old daughter. She asked the all-important question: "What do we wear?" Honestly, I didn't think about it.... I just returned home from Scotland about 2 weeks ago, and understand the weather is a bit unpredictable, and wasn't sure how the summer weather would be. We're Chicagoans, so we are used to the cold and wind, but our summers are incredibly hot and humid, and we aren't exactly sure what to expect in Edinburgh. Also, is the Tattoo a formal event? In asking this, I mean, is it expected that ladies wear dressier attire (no blue jeans, t-shirts or other casual wear)? Does anyone have any recommendations? Or, if you have been, what did you wear? Just wondering, as we do not want to be disrespectful or look like total idiots. Thanks in advance!! Melissa

Hi Melissa, thank you for getting in touch. Although the Tattoo takes place in the summer, it can get a little chilly when the sun goes down so we do ask that guests dress accordingly. Unless you have a ticket for a dinner... More

Are seats better in higher or lower sections. Looking at sections 6,7,10 or 11.

I prefer the higher sections. I enjoy a wide view of the show and fireworks.
