I did the Grand Tour of Scotland (five day tour) and it was amazing. Scotland is absolutely beautiful and this tour was an easy and stress-free way of seeing it. I just returned from Edinburgh and truly enjoyed the one day trip to Rossyln Chapel and Hadrian's Wall with Helen, our amazing tour guide. I must say that Helen was one of the best highlights of the trip! The Chapel was just breathtaking, visiting Hadrian's Wall was very interesting, and the countryside was so beautiful; but Helen and her great... More

We really enjoyed our day in the Highlands with Iain, our guide/driver. He was informative, entertaining, and had a wonderfully odd sense of humor. We had limited time and felt the day gave us a glimpse of rural Scotland. Would recommend the tours to friends, and particularly our guide Iain!

Just came back from Scotland after a 10 day trip and half of that was in the wee red bus with Danny at the wheel and am I ever so glad he was. The company handles all reservations, so you really don't know where you're staying. You can choose hotel, B&B or hostel and they do the rest. You pay... More

We really enjoyed our 3 day tour through Scotland and the Isle of Skye with this company. This was the first time we've ever done this type of tour and it worked great for us. Not driving was a great choice. Relaxing and listening to our guide Andy entertain our group of 16 with tales, history, opinions and jokes in... More

We did 3 small group tours with Heart of Scotland during our week in Edinburgh. Our guides Iain, Helen and Niall were the best. They made each tour fun and very informative. Would you them again anytime.

We were so uncomfortable on the bus to and from Loch Ness. Crammed on the back seat which should have sat three people, but had 4. In order to sit back, I had to cross my arms and legs and hunch my shoulders forward. I cried most of the way back. And sat on the front of the seat because... More

Hi Beth, I'm sorry to hear you felt the mini-coach was so uncomfortable especially as most of our reviewers have expressed the opposite sentiment over the years. I have personally sat in all of the seats to ensure they are comfortable with acceptable legroom (I am 183 cm/6 feet tall). All 16 seats are full-size motor coach seats and as... More

We very much enjoyed this tour on the Wee Red Bus. Alan was a terrific guide and gave us a most interesting overview of Scottish history. The small bus is well worth taking over the large coaches as the tour is more personal, less rushed and more flexible. The highlands themselves were a thing of beauty and a highlight of... More

We don't usually sign up for bus tours, but this two-day tour turned out just perfect for us, to visit the Highlands, learn quite a lot about its history and leave the driving to Richard. He arranged good weather, avoided traffic problems, gave just the right amount of time to loiter and investigate the designated stops, and used what must... More

Staying in Broughton & Calton

Neighbourhood Profile
Broughton & Calton
Lying where grandiose New Town townhouses give way to malls and utilitarian housing, Broughton and Calton have long been transitional neighbourhoods with a mixed identity. It’s here that Edinburgh’s gay village found a home in the 1980s. But gay culture is anything but overt along bustling epicentre Broughton Street; even if polished pubs, hip bistros, smart delis and art galleries all speak of affluent good taste. The top of Leith Walk is more ragged. This major thoroughfare boasts a famously gritty gay club, as well as a strip of good Indian restaurants. Regal Georgian and Victorian townhouses preside over largely deserted streets in Calton, where only the occasional restaurant or hotel brings much life. Even so, a steady trickle of idlers and picnickers pass by to climb Calton Hill for its wide-open lawns, wonderful city views, and curious monuments – an Athenian-style temple among them.
