Top ways to experience Edinburgh Farmers' Market and nearby attractions

The area

Neighbourhood: Old Town
Few Edinburghers live in the Old Town, but its labyrinth of dank alleys and steep streets suggests this was not always the case. Today, it’s mostly visitors, tartan-flavoured souvenir shops, and pipers that you’ll find on its cobbled streets. This is the place to get a feel for Auld Reekie (Old Smelly), as the town was once nicknamed, and stroll the Royal Mile, the thoroughfare that links the castle with the royal palace – two of Edinburgh’s great set-piece attractions. But there’s lots more exploring to do here down dozens of little alleys, or wynds, while at night the city’s busiest clubs erupt along the Cowgate which is closed to traffic for this purpose.

Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

It seems all of Edinburgh markets are wee small. Just 10 produce stands. Kind of a dissapointment. Plan other activity's instead of markets.

City Council lack of investment in the stalls now scruffy and dilapidated. Less farmers and more fast food wagons/stalls. Less customers due to lack of advertising by council. I have gone there most weeks for my shopping.

Used to be a great market now turning into fast food court so Council can maximise income in rents. Usual Council lack of commitment and insight making this a lunch/ coffee venue.

Having just retired back to Edinburgh, we passed here 'just for a look' on an early January typical grey Saturday morning.
Negotiated with a 'Parking Attendant' (They actually speak to you in Edinburgh!) re leaving the car nearby for just a couple of minutes and nipped across. Due to the time of year it was smaller than normal.
We bought Cheeses & Meat (Some meat was frozen and they kept it in their freezer box until we passed on the way back) then bought a Buffalo Burger with Onions and then a £5 'Grunter' Hog Roast Roll with Haggis, Apple Sauce and Crackling. These Mrs eLaReF and I shared.
Next time we'll use our bus passes, since parking might be difficult especially in the dark depths of the car-park underneath the market, once the tourist season is fully under-way.

Extortionate prices for produce totally lacking in flavour. Punnet of strawbs, 3 tomatoes for just under £8. One of the tomatoes had gone to mush by the time I got it home & the strawberries ended lots of sugar they were so tart. Hadn’t been for a while & now I remember why. Won’t be returning.

At the foot of Edinburgh Castle, this is a small market primarily serving the locals, having a variety of stalls that sell meats - uncooked and cooked, fruit and veg, cheese. It's like a mini version of Borough Market (in London)

As a food fanatic I couldn't miss this place. Every Saturday behind the castle the farmers market takes place serving and selling foods from local farms and produce. Amazing place if you want to try the local foods. If you are in Edinburgh on a Saturday this place cannot be missed.

A lovely way to spend a few hours is to visit the Edinburgh Farmer's market on a Saturday morning. Drink coffee, eat pastries and hog roast and buy delicious fruit and vegetables, seafood, meat, cheese and fresh free range eggs. Lots of other products available to tempt you.

Edinburgh has so much to offer but the Farmer's Market was one of my best experiences. The farmers and vendors are happy to chat and answer questions about regional food and other products. Skip breakfast and feast on the hog roast sandwich with stuffing. The cheeses are excellent and generally you can have a taste before deciding which one to buy. And don't miss the oat crackers - the ones with cheese were my favorite. Visiting the market is much more than purchasing food, you can learn more about traditions and meet true craftsmen(women).

This is not one of the largest farmers markets, but it is pretty cool. Lots to see. Lots of people. Lots of food.
