If you love getting fresh breakfast from a market, I can't think of many better than this. It's sat right underneath Edinburgh castle. So you can stroll up towards the Royal Mile with your artisan coffee and a pretzel - or whatever takes your fancy. Lots of Scottish produce on offer here too - salmon, langoustine, pies, haggis, breads, jams,... More

We started out here for a breakfast pastry (cheese and tomato) from one booth and coffee from another before walking over the the castle. Then we came back for lunch with vegetarian options, fish soup, and fresh local fruit. We sat on a bench with a view of the castle and the market and ate lunch while we talked with... More

There are actually two farmer's markets on Saturday.. One in green market square (much more crowded) and one on top of the big car park on castle terrace( much fewer people). It was a great opportunity to taste local fruits/vegetables/foods. We all really enjoyed it.

I've been to this market about 5 times, every time it's been spot on. They really have something for everyone. I usually get a coffee and a cake and some fresh produce. There is also a lady that makes a homemade Nutella that's amazing.

At the foot of Edinburgh Castle, this is a small market primarily serving the locals, having a variety of stalls that sell meats - uncooked and cooked, fruit and veg, cheese. It's like a mini version of Borough Market (in London)

Farmers selling their local and fresh products as meat, vegetables, cheese or jams. Everything straight from farms, tasteful, rich of flavour. Good value for money, moreover I found it very cheap.

I only knew about this market (held on Saturday mornings) because I was staying opposite it, but it was much better than some farmers' markets I have been to. Excellent venison, lamb/hogget, mutton pies and cheese for sale among other things. As you can order online from many of the suppliers represented at the market it is a good way... More

Lovely little market with a range of food from local farmers. Delicious game pies and lovely cheese from Arran cheeses. Can be cold so wrap up warm

Staying in West End

Neighbourhood Profile
West End
Prevailing winds meant that most cities that grew in industrial Britain had their most desirable neighbourhoods to the west – upwind of factory fumes. Edinburgh was no exception, with its wealthiest citizens settling in its West End and leaving behind grand Georgian townhouses, private gardens and genteel crescents. These backstreets remain as dignified and sleepy as ever, and most of the action here lies along the district’s busy main roads. Lothian Road connects to southern Edinburgh and harbors a vague entertainment district: three theatres and the city’s main indie cinema. All attract a select crowd, the sort who appreciate the Saturday Edinburgh’s Farmers’ Market around the corner. The West End’s other great thoroughfare, Shandwick Place, is dominated by trams trundling out to the suburbs and airport, and shoppers picking up last-minute items before hopping aboard.
