The area
Address
Neighbourhood: Old Town
Few Edinburghers live in the Old Town, but its labyrinth of dank alleys and steep streets suggests this was not always the case. Today, it’s mostly visitors, tartan-flavoured souvenir shops, and pipers that you’ll find on its cobbled streets. This is the place to get a feel for Auld Reekie (Old Smelly), as the town was once nicknamed, and stroll the Royal Mile, the thoroughfare that links the castle with the royal palace – two of Edinburgh’s great set-piece attractions. But there’s lots more exploring to do here down dozens of little alleys, or wynds, while at night the city’s busiest clubs erupt along the Cowgate which is closed to traffic for this purpose.

    Busy and delicious!
We visited 2 times while we visited Edinburgh. Very busy place ! The staff was friendly and hard working. We enjoyed our meals of steak and ale pie, stovies and sticky toffee pudding! The food was always piping hot.

    Best Wait Staff!
We literally walked the streets and decided this was our best option. Could not have been happier! As two vegetarians on our first day in Scotland, we had low expectations. The wait staff was fantastic - warm, kind, inquisitive, could go on and on. The wait is long! (But it was Fringe and Tattoo.) Worth it. (Got a buzzer.) Food was excellent. We sat upstairs and had a delightful time. In fact, so good, we returned for dinner a few hours later before going to the Tattoo. It was a step back in time but the food is very modern and staff a delight.

Great traditional pub in the heart of Edinburgh
Great traditional Scottish pub, we were there when the 6 Nations Scotland Vs France match was on and it was buzzing. Great atmosphere very friendly, bar staff were rushed off their feet. Would definitely recommend and would return.

    Nice Watering Hole
It's very crowded, being situated near the castle end of the Royal Mile, where hordes of tourists congregate. The staff are polite and you can get a table upstairs without trouble if willing to wait. The food is quite good and the menu appears to be the duplicate of that in The Mitre. Prices are moderate.

We just tried to come here for a drink (8:30 on Wednesday night) and were told apologetically that it was bookings only. We understood due to Covid etc. so started to move on but overheard the gentlemen behind us mention they had called 10 minutes ago to book. We decided to call and see if we could reserve for the next 10 minutes. The woman who answered the phone said we didn’t need to book for drinks and had to come to the pub and see if they had availability. We said we had just been turned away for a lack of booking and suddenly the line was cut. We called back hoping it was a mistake and we hadn’t been hung up on. The same voice answered the phone and my partner said “ hi yes I was just talking with you and the phone was hung up” the woman claimed that “must have been her colleague”. We enquired again about a booking and we’re told that the restaurant was closed. My partner hung up and we walked away laughing at the ridiculous exchange we had shared with this pub. I guess next time they should get their story straight.

Me and my boyfriend visit Edinburgh twice a year and have been for the last 6 years. Deacon Brodie tavern is one of our favourite pubs (well was), we have tried to get into the pub for the past few days but a very rude American woman has turned us away every time while the pub has been empty and she has said sorry we’re full. She has really put us off going back as her overall attitude is disgusting and can tell she doesn’t want to be there!

Me (25), my mum (63), my partner (25) and my brother (24). We tried to order and the barman asked for ID. I told them that 3 of us had ID and were happy to provide it, however, my brother (who is autistic) does not but he is only drinking water.

As a side note- I am sure anyone who is an aware individual will autism can struggle to get ID if they are unable to learn to drive or do not have a passport.

I tried to explain this to two bar staff who kept on saying that they could not service any of us without everyone ID. There practise was rude and honest so disrespectful to my brother, suggesting that he and his disability were the problem. There were adults in the pub drinking with there children and I guarantee they were asking for ID from them. We left. I seriously recommend that management take a look at this and teach there bar staff some basis understanding around disability to handle the situation like this better in the future so no one else has this experience.

Okay, obviously it’s a tourist trap given the location. But just because we’re tourists doesn’t mean we like cold, bland food in a not so clean dining room that we just waited 45 min to be seated in. Is it really that hard to heat up a pie?

Such a treat to be in the same pub when Robert Louis Stevenson wrote the Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr Hyde. I felt privileged because this was one of my favourite pieces of literature in the horror genre.
I do like the Nicholson pubs and have visited quite a few now. This is a good one with a great female assistant manager serving on NYE! Try the Nicholson ale

We were told that we had to visit Deacon Brodie's on our recent trip to Edinburgh, so we did. We were a bit disappointed as the food is just basic and nothing out of the ordinary. you are paying for the atmosphere of an old pub in Edinburgh with a bit of history to it. The decor is a bit drab and needs an update. Fun fact, the other pubs along the Royal Mile near Deacon Brodie's all have the same menu but some prepare the food much better. Once was enough, just to say we were there.

We had booked a table and we're looking forward to it. We got there and they checked the booking and said, 'we don't do bookings'. 'our system has done that lots recently', then told us people were waiting an hour to sit despite us booking a table. Might want to sort this out as that's a pathetic excuse to give. So we went to Hard Rock instead much better staff and environment.

We visited on the 13th Jan and had a great visit. Lovely traditional pub with a unique history in an iconic location. Great menu and the food was delicious. The staff were absolutely great on this visit and an absolute credit to the pub. I’ve only dropped it from 5 as we visited the previous night to try and get a table and the younger female member of staff was very rude, nonchalant and dismissive when telling us they were full - the staff were totally different the following night and super friendly !
