Top ways to experience Waterloo Place and nearby attractions

The area
Neighbourhood: Old Town
Few Edinburghers live in the Old Town, but its labyrinth of dank alleys and steep streets suggests this was not always the case. Today, it’s mostly visitors, tartan-flavoured souvenir shops, and pipers that you’ll find on its cobbled streets. This is the place to get a feel for Auld Reekie (Old Smelly), as the town was once nicknamed, and stroll the Royal Mile, the thoroughfare that links the castle with the royal palace – two of Edinburgh’s great set-piece attractions. But there’s lots more exploring to do here down dozens of little alleys, or wynds, while at night the city’s busiest clubs erupt along the Cowgate which is closed to traffic for this purpose.

Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.

Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

Waterloo Place is just on the edge of Princes Street which is probably the most well known road in Edinburgh apart from the Royal Mile. The tram stop is close by and many of the buses run along this road as well.

When I visited there was a street market there which was cool. Good to see local businesses being given an opportunity to sell their products.

Stayed at the Apex Waterloo Hotel. Excellent friendly service. Great facilities including a pool and spa to unwind at the end of a hectic day. Fantastic location as very close to Waverley Train Station. Also most tours start in this area so a great spot to pick as a base.

We exited at Waterloo Place yesterday after our descent from Calton Hill, having entered Calton Hill from the other end at Royal Terrace/Blenheim Place.
Waterloo Place is like an extension to Princes Street at the eastern end, still very centrally situated, and with hotels, yet at the same time much quieter than the main thoroughfare of Princes Street itself.
General Register House and Scotlands People Centre are just on the borderline, their addresses just coming under Princes Street before the commencement of Waterloo Place. A little way further along Waterloo Place you will find the Old Calton Burial Ground which is worth a look around, and then a little further along is the easier way to access Calton Hill.

I remember Waterloo Place at the area to catch all of the day tour buses. It is to the right when you exit out of Waverley Station and walk down Princes Street. When Princes Street ends near the North Bridge then you will be at Waterloo Place.

A slightly hilly street that starts from the eastern end of Princes Street and ends at the foot of Calton Hill. The street divides the Old Calton Cemetery in the south to Leith Street in the north. There's a few fine looking buildings, but nothing so interesting that the street should be listed on TA.

Beautiful Georgian facades, but now quite a busy road. Easy to imagine how it might once have been...

Waterloo Place leads to Carlton Hill but of itself it's not a place I'd suggest tourists make efforts to see. It's really just a street with some shops, offices and bus stops

Running along the south side of Calton Hill, Waterloo Place has some amazing old Scottish buildings and features to enjoy. The retaining wall is amazing, and opposite is the Calton Hill cemetery, replete with moss-covered stone. Further down, buildings in dull grey tower over the road. An interesting street, and a great way to get to and from Calton Hill. Take a look, I enjoyed Waterloo Place.
