Captain's Bar has Scottish Folk music nightly in this historic and traditional bar in the old town. Close to the Royal Mile but a genuine Scottish bar where people appreciate talented musicians. Some nights are traditional singing - old folk songs and contemporary. Other nights are acoustic fiddle, guitar, flute and bagpipes. There are special folk sessions on Saturday and Sunday afternoons. The bar sells coffee and has wifi and a book exchange. Small seated area and the rest is standing area.

After researching online for the best places for live music, my sister and I found Captain's Bar. We went there right after settling into our hotel and we are so glad that we did. We recently visited Edinburgh and this place was just down the street from the apartment we rented. We went one night for a couple of pints & to hear the live music. It was pretty good. We ended up going there again a few nights later. Both nights the music was good & we enjoyed ourselves very much.

We came here three nights in a row, and each night had something new to offer musically. The first night was intimate and we felt all the feels as the bar patrons sang along to Scottish folks songs. The second night was singer's night and a group of students came in with guitars, fiddles, and accordions and turned the place... More

Called into the captains bar in Edinburgh on a recent trip! Had been before and wanted my son to experience the friendliness and hospitality of a local, real Scottish pub! We certainly were not disappointed as the drink was served with a smile, by Lindsey and then another couple of friendly women! The session taking place early in the evening... More

Staying in Old Town

Neighbourhood Profile
Old Town
Few Edinburghers live in the Old Town, but its labyrinth of dank alleys and steep streets suggests this was not always the case. Today, it’s mostly visitors, tartan-flavoured souvenir shops, and pipers that you’ll find on its cobbled streets. This is the place to get a feel for Auld Reekie (Old Smelly), as the town was once nicknamed, and stroll the Royal Mile, the thoroughfare that links the castle with the royal palace – two of Edinburgh’s great set-piece attractions. But there’s lots more exploring to do here down dozens of little alleys, or wynds, while at night the city’s busiest clubs erupt along the Cowgate which is closed to traffic for this purpose.
