Established in 2010, Edinburgh Photography Tours is the number one ranked photography tour in Edinburgh, all of Scotland and the number one ranked photography tour in Europe. James Christie is a world renowned and internationally published, professional photographer and he will take you on a four hour walking / photography tour around all the major attractions in Edinburgh's vibrant and famous historic Old Town. Edinburgh Photography Tours Limited were accredited with an "excellent standard" grading by Visit Scotland, Scotland's national tourist board. In addition we have were awarded TripAdvisor's prestigious Certificate Of Excellence for the year 2015, our fourth year in a row winning this award. We are also ranked as number one of all tours in Edinburgh by USA today. James Christie has established himself as one of the leading photographic instructors in the world with plaudits from all over the globe.

As a native of Edinburgh, James will provide an historical account of each attraction visited. His goal is to help you get the best from your camera (SLR, DSLR, Bridge, Compact, even your smart-phone) and show you how to compose professional and memorable shots of Edinburgh. If your camera has the ability to shoot in manual mode, James is confident that after this tour, you will never go back to any of the programmable modes ever again. James shows you how to take each photograph and reviews each shot and guarantees that each participant will take home stunning photographs of Edinburgh that can be displayed and enjoyed for many years to come.

The tours are aimed at all levels of photographer, from absolute beginner to experienced professional. James does not use confusing jargon, preferring to explain things in a simple to understand manner. James is friendly, patient, polite and encouraging.

Edinburgh Photography Tours were established in 2010, the first photography tour of its kind anywhere in the world. We work very hard to ensure our clients have a first class experience on our tours and we continue to strive for excellence every day.

The tours start at 10 am daily (Monday - Sunday) and last approximately 4 to 5 hours. The cost of the tour is £75 (with a maximum of 10 participants per tour) or a four-hour private tour can be booked for £500 (Please e-mail James for further details). Please note: Our Tours always go ahead whether we have one person booked or the maximum of ten people. Brilliant few hours spent with James today. Although I live here, we were taken to scenic spots to get the best photos. Some really useful advice about setting up your camera to get the very best shots you can. James' experience and banter shines through and his knowledge brought history to life. Thanks for the great time!

I had a great day with James around Edinburgh and learned a huge amount about the city and, most importantly, in my view, how to use my camera more effectively. He broke things down excellently, gave plenty of information and I'm now well on my way to improving my photography. He's extremely personable and interesting, and a pleasure to be... More

Thank you Robin for your superb review. As an Edinburgh native, I love to show people parts of the Historic Old Town that people don't get to see on other tours. I've been a professional photographer for over 35 years and as such I find it not only easy, but extremely rewarding to help others, like yourself, raise the quality... More

Thank you for your fantastic review Samantha. I am very happy that you enjoyed the photography tour around Edinburgh's Historic Old Town. I do my very best, every day, to let people see things that most Edinburgh residents are completely unaware of. I believe after the tour, you are well on your way to taking more fantastic photographs in the... More

I was fortunate enough to take this tour with James in early January as his only client that day. Weather obliged with frosty blue skies with striated cumulus clouds. Although it was a wee bit nippy on fingers working camera controls but fabulous cloud effects and spectacular sunset at Kelso Abbey. James was delightful as company and very mentoring in... More

James was a very professional photographer and guide. Leading by him, I acknowledge wledged not only how to adjust my camera under different shooting condition, but also how to see the world differently. He introduced some practical advice which could definitely raise my photo technicals into a different level. The best walking tour ever, highly recommended to those who want... More

I have been to this city many times over the years, but came this time with camera in hand, always a good idea to have a bit of knowledge about the best of locations to shoot from, and how to capture, so such an incite is a good thing :)

I've been on James's Edinburgh tour twice as I went back with a friend when they were visiting the city, in the summer last year. He never fails to deliver and the instruction you receive is second to none. The tour takes you round some of the best bits of Edinburgh's old town and Jame is full of knowledge about... More

I have been on previous tours with James and this has to be one of the best that he has put on. James has been looking at ways to develop his business and has recently launched this tour covering Rosslyn Chapel and four Abbeys (Melrose, Dryburgh, Jedburgh and Kelso). This was a full day tour and a great chance to... More

Staying in Broughton & Calton

Neighbourhood Profile
Broughton & Calton
Lying where grandiose New Town townhouses give way to malls and utilitarian housing, Broughton and Calton have long been transitional neighbourhoods with a mixed identity. It’s here that Edinburgh’s gay village found a home in the 1980s. But gay culture is anything but overt along bustling epicentre Broughton Street; even if polished pubs, hip bistros, smart delis and art galleries all speak of affluent good taste. The top of Leith Walk is more ragged. This major thoroughfare boasts a famously gritty gay club, as well as a strip of good Indian restaurants. Regal Georgian and Victorian townhouses preside over largely deserted streets in Calton, where only the occasional restaurant or hotel brings much life. Even so, a steady trickle of idlers and picnickers pass by to climb Calton Hill for its wide-open lawns, wonderful city views, and curious monuments – an Athenian-style temple among them.
