This started at 7 and last till 9,so nice and dark. The guide was a lady called Linda and she was fantastic ,knew her stuff and really played the part. Cost £16 but you get a glass of whisky so all in all not the worst price. There's stories a plenty and the walking is not overly long -but it... More

When we visit Edinburgh we love doing the ghost tours which Mercat Tours. This time round we took out 11 year old daughter and did the tour that takes you into the vaults in the city. Scary and fabulous for her in equal measures. Our tour guide this time was Mark. He was funny and knowledgeable and entertaining in equal... More

We did the Underground Edinburgh tour yesterday. It really is a fascinating story and the tour path is well set up. We learned a lot about life in Edinburgh 300 years ago, but the tour guides seemed to be a little too memorized and a little flat. It's probably an occupational hazard of giving the same tour many times. It... More

My husband and I did this tour yesterday afternoon. The guide Nora was very good and informative. She gave us a sense of what it would have been like to have worked or lived underground. We enjoyed the tour but I used the torch app that I have on my phone to shine on the ground as it's very uneven... More

Been wanting to do one of these ghost walks for years now and finally had the chance few weeks ago. Cost £32 for 2 adults with promise of an evening of spooky tales and history around Edinburgh. Sadly was left disappointed as followed around a guide who clearly had drama school drop out issues using the same descriptive words for... More

Booked this walking tour of The Secrets of The Royal Mile before our visit. It went ahead despite the weather, very windy, heavy rain and cold!! Martin our guide was very knowledgeable and kept everyones interest throughout the tour.

The 9pm Ghost Tour was fantastic! Our guide Linda was brilliant in telling the stories of the gruesome and spooky. The underground vaults definitely have a scary feeling to them. The tour was an hour which is the perfect amount of time. An organised and professionally run tour.

Staying in Old Town

Neighbourhood Profile
Old Town
Few Edinburghers live in the Old Town, but its labyrinth of dank alleys and steep streets suggests this was not always the case. Today, it’s mostly visitors, tartan-flavoured souvenir shops, and pipers that you’ll find on its cobbled streets. This is the place to get a feel for Auld Reekie (Old Smelly), as the town was once nicknamed, and stroll the Royal Mile, the thoroughfare that links the castle with the royal palace – two of Edinburgh’s great set-piece attractions. But there’s lots more exploring to do here down dozens of little alleys, or wynds, while at night the city’s busiest clubs erupt along the Cowgate which is closed to traffic for this purpose.
