About
This site is open for you to enjoy but there are currently some access restrictions in place as a precautionary measure. The castle of Craigmillar is one of the most perfectly preserved castles in Scotland. Even today, the castle retains the character of a medieval stronghold. Building began in the early 15th century, and over the next 250 years the castle became a comfortable residence surrounded by fine gardens and pastureland. The castles history is not only closely involved with the city of Edinburgh, but plays an important part in the story of Mary Queen of Scots who fled to Craigmillar Castle following the murder of Rizzio. It was in the castle where the plot was hatched to murder Marys husband, Lord Darnley. Built round an L-plan tower house of the early 15th Century, Craigmillar was much expanded in the 15th and 16th Centuries.

- The Owl ReviewsEdinburgh, United Kingdom196 contributionsFun Halloween event 🎃We came here the 4 of us dressed up for a fun Halloween event. Although it's mostly geared towards children, it's incredibly fun if you get into it. Everyone had smiles on their faces and looked like they had a brilliant time. Loads of kids activities. We're adults but got into the fun by dressing up and having a great time. Would recommend.Visited October 2023Travelled with friendsWritten 29 October 2023
- GrahamRugby, United Kingdom1,519 contributionsGreat ruined castle which overlooks EdinburghThis castle is on top of a hill, in the middle of its own park. This is an ancient ruin that has been partly repaired. There are rooms in the tower with roofs and displays. The spiral stairs take you up to further rooms and finally the roof. From the roof there are views of Edinburgh Castle, the River Forth, Arthur’s Seat and further along the coast. After the castle we walked in the grounds, and over the road to Hawkfill Wood. A great day out.Visited April 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 28 April 2024
- diceman13New Orleans, Louisiana174 contributionsGreat castle ruinsGreat old castle. Part of the roof is gone. What I loved about it was I was almost the only one there. You get to walk the whole entire castle. I really loved it. It is really interesting to see what people thought was the lap of luxury back then.Visited April 2024Travelled soloWritten 7 May 2024
- Elizabeth C20 contributionsFantastic Castle RuinsFantastic castle ruins that are well cared for. Even in inclement weather, we had a great time. Took an Uber there, then walked down the path into town to catch the Lothian bus #30 back to Edinburgh city center.Visited May 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 24 May 2024
- Steph LWellington, New Zealand51 contributionsBest Castle in EdinburghThe actual best castle in Edinburgh. Amazing views of the city and a genuine castle ruins experience (rather than military museum after museum at Edinburgh Castle). Prepare to get lost in the passage ways and all the different staircases. A must see if you want a genuine Edinburgh experience. Do wear good shoes due to narrow steps and conditions after rain. I would highly recommend.Visited June 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 1 June 2024
- MarkSheffield, United Kingdom705 contributionsHistoryThis is a hidden gem in the local history, most do the usual, Edinburgh Castle, Stirling even Linlithgow and although not on the same scale are linked. Its not the largest to explore but the views from the top would rival any of the ones mentioned, plenty of steps so good shoes a must, great staff willing to answer any questions you may have. It was our final stop on our way home after a long weekend and it was well worth the visit.Visited June 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 16 June 2024
- Angie DAmes, Iowa290 contributionsThe “other” Edinburgh castleThis is a little off the beaten path, but totally worth it! Incredibly inexpensive, and filled with history. The grounds and castle are absolutely lovely, as were the workers. I think this probably would be difficult for people with mobility issues, due to the many, many stairs, but if you don’t have any issues, make sure to go to the top of the towers for a great view of Arthur’s Seat! Warning - if you have acrophobia issues (like I do), maybe meter what level you visit! Make sure to look into all of the history related to Mary Queen of Scots - from the Rough Wooing to the Craigmillar Bond! There were many people just having picnics, or playing with their young children in the grounds. It really was lovely.Visited August 2024Travelled with familyWritten 13 August 2024
- Wendie MLincolnshire, United Kingdom142 contributionsGreat castle with fabulous viewsWe arrived just after opening time and there was only one other couple here so lovely and quiet it was slightly drizzly so we started looking at the inside sections but by the time we went on turrets etc it had dried up There are countless rooms and corridors here Fantastic views and so quiet considering how close this is to Edinburgh Definitely worth a visitVisited August 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 30 August 2024

Craigmillar Castle is a hidden gem in the heart of Edinburgh. What a big castle this is. Amazing space that's kept really well . Plenty of rooms to explore and lovely views of Edinburgh from the roof top.A wonderful atmosphere, peace, quiet and autumn fields. The original tower house of the late 1300s is at the core. Craigmillar was among the first of this type of castle to be built in Scotland. The courtyard wall, built in the 1400s, is well preserved. The west range was rebuilt after 1660 as a family residence for the Gilmour family. Loved the tree in the courtyard. Good weather is recommended as most of the rooms are uncovered. Getting there by public transport requires a long walk from the bus stop. But, history lovers get there.Great visit. For me personally, the castle is a must-see.

Lived in Edinburgh for 34 years and never visited. Purchased historic Scotland memberships and decided to make the most of it and visit. We prebooked and got parked there is probably about 8 spaces in the car park with one disabled space. Really friendly welcome and wish I had purchased the guide book for 2.50. We spent over an hour here investigating all the rooms and out of all the castle we have went to as someone said previously it has lots of nooks and crannies. The views of edinburgh and Arthur's seat are fabulous and we got a really sunny September day. It was pretty busy not sure if it was because it was sunny or because edinburgh castle was closed because if the queen dying. My son really liked the prison and there are a couple of games set up on the grass a bowling one and things you throw which he really liked. We could have spent longer but my son had spied the lucas ice cream on the way in and kept going on about that so we retreated back to the gift shop where we purchased ice cream tubs and juice and we're pleasantly surprised that we got 20% off being historic Scotland members. Would def recommend for locals and tourists alike.

This was our second visit to Craigmillar castle and this time there were fewer people so it was even better.
I love that they just left the castle the way it is and the views from the roof are stunning. Staff was super friendly. Part of the castle was under construction because of danger of collapse and thus closed off.

I visited this castle on a Sunday afternoon in April 2022. I had heard great things about the castle on the internet so was interested in seeing it. The castle was nice to explore and gave a good perspective of what it was like during the 1500s and gave details of Mary Queen of Scots time at the castle. The views of Edinburgh and surrounding lands from the top of the castle were stunning. The only con I have is that the entrance fee was £7 per adult which I felt was overpriced compared to other similar places to visit in Scotland regarding the amount of things to view there.

Craigmiller Castle is an incredible restoration of a very important place within stunning views of the Sea, Arthur’s Seat and Edinburgh Castle. Fantastic to imagine signal fires and trips of kings and queens between them. I will return and bring people!! A really fun place with the opportunity to explore around. Just great!

The day we went it was very rainy, thus it was pretty empty. Friendly staff at ticket office. Great castle ruins with a great history related to Mary Queen of Scots. Also, used in several episodes of Outlander Season 3. Fairly close to downtown Edinburgh.

Great place to visit. The best castle I have visited so far. The only reason I have given 4 stars is because half the castle is closed off and we were still charged full price. I think if you don't get the full experience you shouldn't pay full price.

First, we saw and petted "Amber" the cat; it's a thing here. Second, we enjoyed the experience of wandering through the maze of rooms, corridors and spiral staircases. Many more of those here than in other castles we have visited. We also enjoyed the view from the upper roof of Arthur's Seat. As members of the Historic Environment Scotland organization, which is the lead public body established to investigate, care for and promote Scotland's historic environment, our admission was free. It is but a half mile walk from the stop for bus 2; that is one of the bus routes that serve Old Town in the city center.

If you don’t make an effort to visit this amazing place, you’ll miss out! The castle is easily accessible by public bus or you can drive there; there is limited parking at the site. By bus, you’d be dropped off near enough, for an approximate 1/2 mile walk, slight uphill Craigmillar road pedestrian sidewalk, or through the park’s beautiful and more strenuous natural path; that’s how I got there. You’ll be handsomely rewarded by an unexpected and spectacular view of the castle, as you reach the top of the path. Entrance fee is reasonable, there is a gift shop, cafe and toilets. Comfortable shoes a must; there are lots of winding stairs, nearly vertiginous, and many uneven floors, as you’d expect in an old castle. I’d say you need about two hours, to fully take advantage of the spectacular views, tranquility of the green areas and to meander and go through every single room, balconies, prison cell, cellars, etc. Most wondrous place with equally amazing history. Some limited areas inaccessible due to restoration projects, but that did not detract from the whole experience. Well worth a visit. Good explanatory signage. No handicap access and I wouldn’t recommend it for young children. Castle staff was very helpful and friendly. Absolutely loved and enjoyed my visit here and most resolutely recommend this amazing place to others. Dress in layers; the castle can feel a little cold in some areas.

Breathtaking castle ruin- much more interesting than Edinburgh castle. You can imagine what it was like 600 yrs ago and they have wonderful games for kids mixed right into the ruins. There were tons of places to explore and almost get lost in and it also has very interesting garden lawn cut in the shape of unicorn heads. The people working there were very helpful and friendly and knowledgeable. It felt like going back in time set in a field in the middle of the country yet a stones throw from Edinburgh. Turrets and views and dungeons ….not to be missed!

Hi, Can you walk down to Craigmillar Castle from the large Park grounds near Palace of Holyroodhouse? I am healthy and fit but couldn't do 9 or 12 miles. Thanks

Hi. I want to visit the castle in August and since it will be the first thing I visit in Edinburgh, I would like to know if in the castle they sell the Family Historic Scotland Explorer Pass. Thank you.
Written 23 April 2019
The pass can be bought at any Historic Scotland site where you pay to enter :) There is a small shop at the entrance to Craigmillar Castle where you will be able to buy it.
You can also order the pass online through the Historic Scotland website - click on "Visit a Place" on the main menu. Then you will see the option for the Explorer Pass and you can order the passes there.
I hope this helps :)

Any advice on which bus to take from the city center?
Written 21 December 2018
Any bus that goes to the Royal Infirmary: 7, 8, 33 and 49 are the ones I can remember off the top of my head. Get off at the Little France Crescent bus stop (just after you turn in to the hospital from the main road). From there, walk about 100m straight on, following the direction the bus is going in and you'll see a gateway and a path on your left. The path will take you up towards the castle.

According to the Historic Scotland website:
Visitors' dogs are allowed at Craigmillar Castle, but are not permitted in roofed areas.
Dogs must be kept on a lead at all times and not left unattended. A no fouling rule applies at all our sites.

We like to walk? is there a good route to get to Castle after visiting Arthur's seat?
Written 11 June 2017
Hi, yes you can walk down the back of Arthur's seat and through the ancient village of Duddingston which has one of the oldest pubs in the U.K. 'The sheeps Heid Inn' well worth a visit. Then up hill to the castle, there are lots of great walks around the castle to enjoy.

Is there a tour so we'll know what we are experiencing? I hope the cat visits us, too!
Written 19 April 2017
Thanks for your message. There isn't a guided tour available but there are interpretation panels around the castle. We do have a Craigmillar Castle guide book that you can purchase online at shop.historic-scotland.gov.uk or when you arrive at the castle. Have a great visit! Kind Regards
