Neighbourhood: Old Town
Few Edinburghers live in the Old Town, but its labyrinth of dank alleys and steep streets suggests this was not always the case. Today, it’s mostly visitors, tartan-flavoured souvenir shops, and pipers that you’ll find on its cobbled streets. This is the place to get a feel for Auld Reekie (Old Smelly), as the town was once nicknamed, and stroll the Royal Mile, the thoroughfare that links the castle with the royal palace – two of Edinburgh’s great set-piece attractions. But there’s lots more exploring to do here down dozens of little alleys, or wynds, while at night the city’s busiest clubs erupt along the Cowgate which is closed to traffic for this purpose.

Fantastic experience with the amazing views from the top - the view alone is worth it! Friendly staff and a really fun exhibition - a must-go if you're ever in Edinburgh!

Loved this place! We had just been to the castle which was disappointing to us. This definitely made the day better. From funny mirrors, to tripy patterns and illusions, the mirror maze and the vortex. We spent nearly 2 hrs using all of the equipment and having a good time. Definitely worth it. Especially when you get to the top the views are amazing! Well worth a visit.

There were very few people in the museum so we had near-unlimited use of all the exhibits. We loved the tunnel and the mirror maze as well as all the smaller bits and pieces. We got 50% off with a code i think it was called Edinburghdaysout if you google it you'll find it! Highly recommend to everyone, good for kids and adult kids!

The Vortex Tunnel and the Mirror Maze are two of our most popular exhibits and it’s good to hear that they were your favourites too. Pre-booked tickets after recommended from a friend who had visited a few months ago. The actual museum itself has good content but was spoilt by far too many people being able to book time slots. Not allowed in till your time which is fair enough, but then group of people all trying to see the same thing. If try to go ahead quicker you soon catch up with groups in front. No room for social distances but there are gel machines for hands throughout which is needed as interactive museum touching pieces.
Only good thing was the view at the top of the castle and the tunnel/mirror room. I managed to get a discounted ticket price. Would not want to pay full price for the hour we spent here because couldn’t see half the stuff or rushed due to too many people!

Hello and thank you for taking the time to leave us a review. We are glad you enjoyed the content at Camera Obscura & World of Illusions. Thanks for providing feedback on your visit, it is regrettable you felt it was busy during your visit. Saturday is our most popular day so we do recommend visitors who prefer a quieter experience to book outside peak-times for their own enjoyment. Just to offer you some additional information, we have reduced capacity several times over the last year with the most recent capacity reduction on the 27th December 2021. This is in addition to our entry time slots and our one-way-system which is in place. This is something we will continue to monitor and evaluate so thanks for your feedback on this. We are glad you found our hand sanitiser stations which are located on every floor to be useful. We are also glad you enjoyed our spectacular views from the rooftop as well as our Vortex Tunnel and Mirror Maze exhibits. Thanks again for your feedback and we hope you enjoyed the rest of your stay in Edinburgh.

Had high hopes for this, Place was far too crowded. Could hardly get near any exhibits. Best bit was the views you could sort of get from the top. Plenty of hand sanitiser of offer, lack of visitors using it.

Hi Matt. Thanks for taking time to leave us a review. We are glad you enjoyed our spectacular panoramic reviews from our rooftop. January is our quietest time of year, and we aren’t operating at our reduced capacity levels, so your comments are somewhat surprising, but it is deeply regrettable that you felt this way. We further reduced capacity at the end of December in addition to our pre-booked timeslots and one-way-system, but this is something we will continue to monitor and adjust according to visitor feedback so please know your comments are taken on-board. Thanks for your feedback on the hand-sanitiser, this is used in addition to our cleaning regime, and as you said, we have hand sanitiser available on every floor which we encourage visitors to make use of. Thanks again for taking the time to leave us feedback and we hope you enjoyed the rest of your weekend.

Part of our visit to Edinburgh was coming to camera obscura after being told by family and friends how great it was, and it didn’t disappoint! Hilarious and fun things to view and see in the attraction with the most beautiful views of Edinburgh from the rooftop with 360 degree views. Not expensive at all and brilliant value for money

There was way too many people in the building, despite the mesures already in place. I have barely been able to enjoy any parts of the exhibitions, as I felt pushed by other people behind me, whilst waiting to look at the next thing. Most of the activities are interactive which is great, but honestly I didn't see many people use sanitiser and a few didn't wear their masks - or were taking them off to take pictures. It put me off doing anything interactive.

Also I understand that families would come and children would be excited but it was just overcrowded, parents shouting everywhere. The one way system doesn't really seem to work as when you reach a new floor, people just spread on the whole area and no one waits to see anything.

I'm sure it's great if you visit as a family, or have enough luck to arrive at a quieter time, but my experience just wasn't enjoyable.

Good afternoon, thanks for taking the time to leave us a review. We are glad you thought the interactive aspect of our experience sounded great and it is regrettable that you didn’t feel you got the opportunity experience it fully. Currently, we are operating with a strict capacity limit as well as using pre-booked timeslots and a one-way-system. This is something we will continue to monitor, and we always appreciate visitor feedback on this. Just to offer you some reassurance on our cleaning, we use a specialized, long-lasting cleaning product called Stabilised Aqueous Ozone which lasts for up to 24 hours as an effective cleaner and sanitiser. SAO is used by a variety of places where surfaces are touched regularly including schools, care homes, hospitality, and public transport. In addition, we have hand sanitiser dispensers available on every floor which we encourage visitors to use. Indeed, we are family-friendly, but we are visited by people of all ages, and this is something we readily encourage. It is regrettable you felt your experience wasn’t enjoyable and I would love to offer you the opportunity to come back and visit at a quieter time so you can get the full interactive experience. If you would like to do this, please contact info@camera-obscura.co.uk with your booking reference and we can arrange this for you. Once again, thanks for taking the time to leave feedback on your visit, we carefully monitor feedback and always try and take visitors suggestions on-board.

I went there with my 12 year son and friends with their children of similar ages. All of us enjoyed it a lot. It was great time out! I was there before - about 20 years earlier so I was a bit dissappointed about experience on the top of camera obscura - that wasn't the same but otherwise great experience! I would recommed it

Everything. I’ve been many times before but each time I go, there seems to be something added or different. Everything was working, clean and well displayed and spaced out. I think this time the one way system worked really well as it felt like there was so much more space on the stairs. Even though there are restrictions, it was great that the camera room could still be entered for new visitors to see. Will be back again!! Excellent place to visit.
