It was a really interesting tour of the structure of the old city, the effects of the plague and life of people in Edinburgh. Tom, our guide was excellent, charismatic and told the story really well. The only reason I haven't given it a 5th star is that there was a bit of a commercial undertone throughout the tour.

I went here with my mum and partner. We all had a brilliant time and found the tour really engaging. Our tour guide Lloyd was really good and when I had a funny turn and thought I was going to faint, he handled the situation very well and managed to sort it discreetly and quickly. Once I recovered I carried... More

Visited with some overseas visitors from NZ. We all really enjoyed this experience which gave a good idea of life in these closes. The guide was very informative without being stuffy and gave us a few laughs. Good bad weather activity with it being underground. Plan and book in advance or be prepared to wait a while for your slot... More

Like most historic attractions, if your tour guide is passionate about their subject, the tour becomes a memorable event and not just a 'oh I've been there' Our guide was very engaging and really encouraged the younger visitors to guess what various items were, he informed the children what life was like in medieval Edinburgh in such a way that... It would be hard to imagine what Edinburgh would have been like between the 16th and 19th centuries without seeing the streets and accommodation that made up the original town. The tour takes you through a number of closes and rooms, the guides are well rehearsed and interesting, you will get more out of the tour by asking questions. There... More

The tour provided an interesting narrative on the history of Edinburgh and was well worth going. Out your guide Francisco was personable and entertaining, taking us on a journey to early modern Scotland that was informative without being dreary! You can't take any photos, and the official photographs at the Close are quite pricey, but the experience was very enjoyable!

quite an interesting little tour - lasts around one hour. Guided tour. An insight into what life was like for the poorer Edinburgh community in the 16/1700s.

We're pleased that you found the history interesting and thought your guide. On the one hour fully guided tour, guests are shown the remains of original streets and houses, some of which date back over five hundred years, where the people of Edinburgh would have lived when these streets were open to the skies. Thank you for taking the time... More

Great tour from Mel, good 5 story depth of knowledge about the mean dark streets of Edinburgh. Made for a good day out. #PengestHistory.

Good tour, good history, good day. Mel was a great tour guide and the jokes were cheesy but top class. Thanks for a great time!

Staying in Old Town

Neighbourhood Profile
Old Town
Few Edinburghers live in the Old Town, but its labyrinth of dank alleys and steep streets suggests this was not always the case. Today, it’s mostly visitors, tartan-flavoured souvenir shops, and pipers that you’ll find on its cobbled streets. This is the place to get a feel for Auld Reekie (Old Smelly), as the town was once nicknamed, and stroll the Royal Mile, the thoroughfare that links the castle with the royal palace – two of Edinburgh’s great set-piece attractions. But there’s lots more exploring to do here down dozens of little alleys, or wynds, while at night the city’s busiest clubs erupt along the Cowgate which is closed to traffic for this purpose.
