Hidden beneath the Royal Mile lies Edinburgh’s deepest secret: a warren of hidden ‘closes’ where real people lived, worked and died. For centuries they have lain forgotten and abandoned…until now. Visit Edinburgh's most famous Close, which makes Edinburgh's Hidden History unmissable.

Well rehearsed guides with a rushed tour round mostly nothing more than empty storerooms along with a bit of furniture and a few dummies, leaflets and website give the impression that you are going to be viewing places that really do look like the streets of old Edinburgh when in fact only in the last few minutes of the tour... This is so overpriced in comparison to the Royal Yaught Brittania which lasts 2 hours and you can take as many pics as you like. The part where you are asked to leave money or a toy for a ghost who's room you cant even see was cheap and embarrassing. They should donate some of the entrance fee to the... More

Decided to give this tour a go. Some friends were already booked on the tour so me and another friend tagged along. I love things like this and am very interested in Historical things and gruesome tales of the past. I thought the tour was very interesting and our guide Rachel W. was great at explaining things. It was fascinating... More

Excellent tour! So informative I learned so much about the history of Mary King's Close. The tour guide was friendly and eager to share his knowledge by encouraging a question and answer time. Superb!

Not heavily advertised but definitely worth a visit - underground Edinburgh. Not a 'ghost' or 'vaults' tour but literally parts of the city built on top of.......see how they used to live. Tour guide brought it to life......glad I'm alive now and not then! Recommend you book in advance.

This was a good tour but could have been made more interesting and lasted a bit longer,it all seemed so very rushed at the end, rooms that were empty could have been dressed,if you don't have an imagination you won't enjoy

An historical journey through the streets and houses beneath current day Edinburgh with a guide in the guise of a character from the distant past. Interesting and informative, giving an insight into the lives of real people. Access is by guided tour only and numbers on tours are limited, so book early.

While visiting the closes website you expect to get to know about the dark history of Edinburgh. Yes you do that but the guided tour is awesomely short and is set up like a Theater game. Quite annoying. You barely get information aside the usual stuff you can read on the internet. Additionally the entry fee is ridiculously high (16£... More

We are sorry to hear that you were so disappointed with your visit to the attraction. The attraction is priced in line with other attractions across the city. Photography is not permitted on the tour due to our location beneath a government building but our photo opportunity on the Close itself is often quite popular as it makes a great... More

We (a group of four adults) thought that the streets and houses below the Royal Exchange were really interesting especially how the people lived in them. It's a shame it is done is such a commercial way. The guide stressed how dirty it was living in these buildings but everything was just too clean. The request to leave money or... More

We are sorry to hear that you found the visit too commercialised, but are pleased that the staff were helpful during your visit. The money or toys that are left in Annie's Room are collected and taken to local children's charities. Guest photography is not permitted due to our location beneath a government building but we do have permission to... More

Staying in Old Town

Neighbourhood Profile
Old Town
Few Edinburghers live in the Old Town, but its labyrinth of dank alleys and steep streets suggests this was not always the case. Today, it’s mostly visitors, tartan-flavoured souvenir shops, and pipers that you’ll find on its cobbled streets. This is the place to get a feel for Auld Reekie (Old Smelly), as the town was once nicknamed, and stroll the Royal Mile, the thoroughfare that links the castle with the royal palace – two of Edinburgh’s great set-piece attractions. But there’s lots more exploring to do here down dozens of little alleys, or wynds, while at night the city’s busiest clubs erupt along the Cowgate which is closed to traffic for this purpose.
