Interesting surroundings though much gentrified from the days when this bar had character. Drinks ridiculously expensive. Snooty, unfriendly staff and surely the most sour faced landlady in Edinburgh. No greeting, no acknowledgement even as we were studiously ignored. On leaving noticed sign on inside of door ' if you have not been thanked for your visit, thank you' or words... More

Bookclub visited Edinburgh for the evening. Had a lovely home cooked meal, then went for a drink at The Canny Man Pub. Was very busy, Scotland having beaten Ireland in rugby. Atmosphere therefore jolly! Staff helpful and found the six of us a seat. We perused the menu - very interesting and unusual with smorgasbord style - in Morningside! Now... More

If you want to try different whiskey then this is a good place to start. Prices can be a stumbling block as some drinks are quite expensive. The place lacks atmosphere and the staff are so dull and lack character. Not got much to say in terms of welcome you get from other places.

Also known by some as the Volunteer Arms, the beer and food are as good as the atmosphere. Ate there twice and drank several time during week 2 of the festival.

Visiting from the US & taken here especially for lunch by a local friend. Unique atmosphere, friendly service & a great dining experience. From the shared oysters for a starter, to the amazing, open-faced sandwich selections, through to a Luca's ice cream sundae dessert, I was impressed with every dish! Hearing some of the bar history from locals was fun...... More

I used to go here 35 years ago and popped in last night for supper around 8.30pm. Great welcome and service and now has a continental feel to the food and service. Table cloth added to table when we ordered food. Same old style and furnishings as always. Keep it up. Thanks

This place is unique and special! We've wanted to come for years. Came for a drink as a party of 6 - offered some complimentary bar snacks and well looked after. I'd love to come back and try the food :-)

Had a really good meal here, the food was excellent, the service was very friendly and helpful. Loved the decor inside at the bar which had huge range of whiskeys and some great local ale.

If you are a visitor to Edinburgh the Canny Man's pub is an institution and located in Morningside, a lovely area of town. Take bus out and walk back down town through the Brunsfield Links and Meadows. The pub serves lots and lots of open sandwiches, fish, shellfish, ham, beef and all beautifully served.
