The area
Address
Neighbourhood: Stockbridge & Dean Village
Just downhill of New Town and attractively straddling a river near the elegant Royal Botanic Garden, it’s small wonder that Stockbridge became one of the city’s first hip neighbourhoods. It’s now one of Edinburgh’s most desirable, though many bohemian touches have fallen away as its residents have matured and the area has gentrified. Some second-hand shops cling on, but mostly residents display refined tastes in basement bistros, gastropubs, coffee and antique shops, boutiques and delis and at the Sunday farmers' market. A pleasant ten-minute walk away, along a leafy riverside path beside the gurgling Water of Leith, lies Dean Village. This sleepy neighborhood of medieval half-timbered houses still retains much of the village feel it had when watermills plied their trade here. Beyond, the wooded riverside path feels even more remote as it climbs to the sculpture gardens of the Scottish National Gallery of Modern Art.

Our first time to Europe. Scotland is a beautiful country so rich in history, culture and architecture. We visited Edinburgh and Inverness and toured the Scottish Highlands. The Scottish people are friendly and the areas we visited were dog friendly. We toured castles, the Britannia Royal Yacht, shopped the Royal Mile and hiked up to Arthur’s Seat and Ben Nevis. The Jacobite Steam Train aka Hogwarts Express was exciting to see. We loved our trip and will have fond memories for some time.

This is more a farmers market rather than a market for tourists. there were a dozen stalls selling cold foods and given covid restrictions no place to eat without going back out on the street.

we were done in 8 mins (yes i timed it).

Paella was not as good as before, did not taste fresh and not much chicken. It was also slightly burnt in places. Further to this, I noticed some very questionable hygiene on the premises. Overall disappointing, I hope it was just a one off and it will get better again, but I'm not sure. They are so popular, maybe they have become a bit complacent?

We have been spending the summer in a flat in Stockbridge. On a number of Sunday's we have walked through the Stockbridge Market. Always plenty of vendors and plenty of people. Nice place to spend a half hour. The most scenic and appetizing food vendor sells paella from huge open bubbling hot pans. We have had the seafood paella (ÂŁ9.00) and found it to be less than meets the eye; virtually all overcooked rice with one shrimp and one langostino.

A super different fair with a great diversity, but with very expensive products. It's worth the trip and don't even think the fair is big. Ahhh...it's also worth the trip, as the fair is close to a beautiful park and stream!!!!

A really nice friendly market to visit. Good family friendly vibe. Great coffee at the first stall. Lots of nice home made and individual stuff to buy.

Because of 'Dogs'
Lots of them
About to buy from a meat stall, my wife was shouldered out of the way by a large brown creature that wanted to sniff the (admittedly sealed in plastic) meat.
So we moved on
She passed the macaroon stall which must have taken some will-power since I usually have to spend a small fortune on the things, but she was headed for the cup-cakes next door.
It was just about her turn to be served when a friend of the stall-holder turned up with a dog on a lead. The dog was quickly spoken to and fondled by the stall-holder who then turned round and wanted to serve us................
I didn't see a Food Hygiene certificate anywhere.
We moved on

I went to the market with my family, not many stalls but varieties. My son and I stopped at "the marshmallow Lady". The woman in charge was not in a right attitude to promote the goods. My 4 years old son not even touching any of it tasters, she had spoken to me in a unfriendly tone not to let my son to pick up the tasters. I was shocked with her sales attitude and can tell that my son was intimidated, I did pick up it and let my son to try as I do not like my son to be frightened with her command and body language. I bought two bags from her and walked away. My personal view, thought it is special, but the unpleasant circumstance has tarnished the spirit of promoting the goods. Glad that we stopped at "Trotter's" - the stall owner is friendly and especially like the Scottish honey mustard, the texture is just perfect. Worth trying and rest assure, no pressure and intimidating experience for young children !

Small, overpriced market selling stuff that you can get much cheaper elsewhere. The paella, is however very good and portion size is great and good value too. Way too packed and the ground beneath you is really uneven. Practically a health hazard, sensible shoes a necessity. The council seem to make no effort to keep the place tidy, see photo. Unacceptable, considering the amount of people it attracts and the business revenue to the local area. Disappointing.

The Stockbridge Market offers all that you would want and more! From tartan dog accessories, jewelry and art prints to fudge, nuts and hot food kiosks all in a charming, treed setting. Grab a coffee or hot beverage and stroll by all of the booths. It makes for the perfect Sunday morning!
