We went on the free walking tour of the old town with Erik and had a great time learning more about various highlights of the city. Having been on a rather more 'am-dram' ghost tour the night before, it was refreshing to hear more factual information about Edinburgh, and Erik's knowledge was impressive. It was just the right balance of... More

The Sandeman's walking tour of Edinburgh, Scotland is quite frankly wonderful. From the moment you book your walking tour via the Sandeman website you are provided excellent information and customer service. The departure point is convenient and well marked. We were fortunate to have Sabella serve as our tour guide and I can say without question she was one of... More

I had already taken a different walking tour of the city and brought my boyfriend to this one fearing I would get a repeat. But our guide Sabela was so engaging and passionate and I had a great time. I discovered new things and even got different versions of known anecdotes. I would definetly recommend this tour.

We took the Dark Side of Edinburgh tour with Max and it was awesome! He's definitely the most enthusiastic tour guide we've ever come across and he really brought the spooky stories to life. He also gave us some great recommendations for what else to do in the city, so thanks Max!

From the time of booking to the end of the actual tour, everything about it was excellent. I booked the tour easily on-line, received a voucher and followed the instructions. I admit, the whole process online looked a little scammy but since it was free, I went ahead and booked it anyway. I showed up at the agreed upon meeting... More

My friend and I are students abroad for the semester and we came to Edinburgh for Thanksgiving. We could not be happier with the tour we were given of Old Town. Sabella was an incredible guide! She told amazing stories and made the almost 3 hour tour fly by in the best way. We couldn't have asked for a better... More

Jen was a very enthusiastic, knowledgeable and humorous quide. The walk was very interesting and gave us some insights into the less touristy bits of Edinburgh. The tea/coffee stop at a community café was a great idea - lovely to be able to support a community project with our custom. All in all a very enjoyable walk in spite of... More

I had an amazing time on my walking tour of Edinburgh. Our guide (Paula) was interesting, funny and an all round great story teller. The 2.5 hours passed quickly despite the freezing cold weather. Tip well they do a great job!

Paid €40 for this tour online (no option to pay in £) and was disgusted to find when I arrived that it was £29...the equivalent of €34 approximately. Absolutely incensed to find out that the tour is over inflated by €6 a ticket. Jen however was a an excellent tour guide, obviously very much enjoys her job and my review... More

Staying in Old Town

Neighbourhood Profile
Old Town
Few Edinburghers live in the Old Town, but its labyrinth of dank alleys and steep streets suggests this was not always the case. Today, it’s mostly visitors, tartan-flavoured souvenir shops, and pipers that you’ll find on its cobbled streets. This is the place to get a feel for Auld Reekie (Old Smelly), as the town was once nicknamed, and stroll the Royal Mile, the thoroughfare that links the castle with the royal palace – two of Edinburgh’s great set-piece attractions. But there’s lots more exploring to do here down dozens of little alleys, or wynds, while at night the city’s busiest clubs erupt along the Cowgate which is closed to traffic for this purpose.
