This was a fantastic tour, James was really funny- some really great stories and walks, if you like horrible stories and anecdotes this is really a good tour, if you don't it's still interesting. As a student on a budget I'd recommend it- whatever you tip is exactly what you think it's worth... and it's worth it!

I attended the old town walking tour on Saturday 18th February. Our guide was a witty and charming American girl called Paula. The tour was extremely informative, interesting, fun and upbeat. Considering some of the dark and twisty stories throughout Edinburgh's history, Paula made this fun and entertaining with her fun tales. She was very knowledgable and answered many questions... Our guide Sabela was very kind and told tons of interesting and fun anecdotes and stories about Edinburgh that I don't think you would get anywhere else. The tour is a good way to see the city and get a feel for the place. She took us to a cafe for a break but there was no pressure to buy... More

I'm an American expat living and working in Italy on a US Army base and since this weekend is a long holiday weekend (Presidents' Day--how ironic!) , I booked a last minute trip to Edinburgh. I had no time to plan anything or do any research but after going on the SANDEMANs free walking tour in London last month, I... More

We pre-booked via the website and so we arrived there just before 2pm. There was no messing around, we got split up into a few different groups and were escorted off with Josh. He was thoroughly knowledgable and very entertaining. We went to all the main sights; Edinburgh castle, Harry Potter areas etc (but Holyrood was missed out). We had... More

Staying in Old Town

Neighbourhood Profile
Old Town
Few Edinburghers live in the Old Town, but its labyrinth of dank alleys and steep streets suggests this was not always the case. Today, it’s mostly visitors, tartan-flavoured souvenir shops, and pipers that you’ll find on its cobbled streets. This is the place to get a feel for Auld Reekie (Old Smelly), as the town was once nicknamed, and stroll the Royal Mile, the thoroughfare that links the castle with the royal palace – two of Edinburgh’s great set-piece attractions. But there’s lots more exploring to do here down dozens of little alleys, or wynds, while at night the city’s busiest clubs erupt along the Cowgate which is closed to traffic for this purpose.
