Perhaps nowhere else in the world can evoke the power of the romantic past more than Abbotsford, stunningly located on the banks of the River Tweed in the Scottish Borders. Abbotsford sits at the heart of the landscape that inspired the poetry and novels of its creator, Sir Walter Scott. Unlike the homes of other great writers, this is a house that the writer himself designed and as such uniquely embodies a physical representation of the Romantic Movement that he helped to create. When you touch the bricks and mortar of Abbotsford, you are touching the soul of Scott. Our new FREE to access Visitor Centre is home to a Stylish Restaurant, Gift Shop and Exhibition on the life and legacy of Sir Walter Scott.

Has any writer made a bigger impact on his time and on his culture? Don’t go along to Abbotsford expecting a huge range of rooms - but relish just how well the Library, the dining room and the unbelievably ornate hall bring Scott to life...More

Rowling, Agatha Christie, and Sir Walter Scott were on to something when they, like other successful writers, took up the pen: money from success. I first heard of this place in Washington, DC at a fund raiser for its repair. We arrived a year or...More

We came to visit the house but found that it was closed between December and March- Google gives the impression it’s open all year! But we still had a great morning here. There’s an interesting exhibition about Scott in the visitors’ centre, lovely walks in...More

The home 19th Century novelist Sir Walter Scott, it oozes old world charm and Scottish personality. As a Californian I can tell you authoritatively that it far out classes and outshines Hearst Castle (granted it is 100 years older). Each room is beautifully furnished and...More

Situated in a beautiful setting and overlooking the R. Tweed, the house exudes a richness and taste that seems to capture the spirit of Walter Scott. The tour is limited to a series of ground floor rooms and in that regard it was slightly brief...More

A few miles away from Galashiels, spectacular location on the banks of the Tweed, well renovated, beautiful gardens. The house is a relatively limited tour, but although I was initially sceptical about the headphone audio tour, actually it works really well. Loved the Study, Library...More
