A good place to visit to see how the victorians treated their accused and convicted. Maybe we should go back to that.

this is a 'must do' if you're in the area, a really good insight into the Victorian penal era. some interesting and very sad stories, helpfully brought to life with the audio tour and actors

We took the kids here last summer and it is well worth a visit. Great place to learn about Scottish History and you get to sit in the courtroom and listen to recordings of real court cases. Didn't like the creepy jailer who seemed to appear round every corner we turned but definitely gave the visit an authentic feel.

Visited the jail with 3 friends on Saturday. A sharp intake of breath was the order of the day, when I was presented with a bill in excess of £40 for 4 tickets! The attraction was fairly interesting and designed well, and the headphone commentary helped get through the exhibition! The jail helps pass the time on a wet afternoon... More

Not that you’d really expect to be touring a jail while on vacation, but this one is quite interesting as it is the actual jail used over the past 200 years before being taken out of service. It comes with an audio tour which is quite good, thorough, and tells of many individual stories of inmates which gives you quite... More

Had a great time. Wasn't planning on going but saw it on our way to Oban and decided to make another day trip and come up. The stories and history behind the jail were very interesting. The shops around the jail had some great finds. Got a lot of great pictures on site. Really liked listening along to the stories... More

The jail was great - we had the speaker headsets which had lots of INTERESTING stuff but not too much. There were some great and gruesome exhibits. When we got to the courthouse we thought there was a coach trip, but it was the jury for a trial and one of them kept staring at me ! The cells of... More

While I don't recommend going out of your way for this attraction, it is well organized and worth a visit if you are there. It shows an important part of the history of imprisonment. I surely would not wish to be there as a prisoner or warden when it was operating.

Really enjoyed this attraction. Plenty to see in a couple of hours and the audio guide was very good. Staff were all very helpful and friendly. There was enough to keep the kids, ages ranging from 7 to 16, interested.
