The Salvation Army aka the Aberdeen Citadel is a fine example of Scottish Baronial architecture. The main tower epitomises the asymmetric, elaborate corbelled tower follies that gives the building a fairytale-like magical experience. If ever your travels take you into Aberdeen, take the time to visit Castle Street just to see this building.

Opposite Mercat Cross in Castlegate is the Salvation Army Citadel, it is a grand structure built in a style resembling a castle and stands on the site of the medieval Aberdeen Castle which was thought to be destroyed by King Robert the Bruce in June 1308. It was a miserable day when I visited but the Citadel looked impressive despite the persistent rain and worth viewing whilst in the city.

This can be found at the of Union Street and is a superb imposing granite building.
The Mercat Cross is in the square outside and the inside is very good and we have attended brass band concerts here and the acoustics are great.
Nearby 50yards away is the Tolbooth Museum which is also worth a visit.

Dominates the bottom of Union Street. Now run by the Salvation army. Lovely to look at and get some photos too.

Great lunchtime venue that provides nice food and snacks and supports a great charity - the volunteers and staff are very friendly and service is good - food and drinks made fresh to order and it’s in a central location

Popped in for a morning coffee and a cake to the Citadel Cafe. No problem finding a table although there were a number of customers. Staff were very helpful. Coffee and cakes were also good and I think some of the baking was 'home made'.
There are other light bite options available and we saw other diners enjoying the food.
This is a charitable cafe, as you would expect, and the prices are very reasonable for central Aberdeen. Staff are all volunteers.
I suggest visitors to the Castlegate end of town should seek out this cafe and give it a try.

A great experience, learning about the salvation army in Scotland, with a great climb to the top of the tower - you have the best view of Aberdeen. Easily one of the best views in all of the UK.

The Salvation Army Citadel, is a imposing building, lovely architecture, and history. Well worth a visit , if your in the area.

Built in the 1890’s to a design by James Souttar, the Salvation Army Citadel has an imposing façade in Castlegate. Its turrets wouldn’t look out of place on a baronial castle. Inside, there is the worship hall, a friendly café and meeting rooms where several clubs meet weekly.
