Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

A small, but pleasant area of Aberdeen where the main sights are the Aberdeen Citadel, Aberdeen Town Hall, Mercat Cross and Mannie Well. Like most civic squares, there’s plenty of shops, cafes and restaurants in and around the main square.

This was the very busy area of Aberdeen where the market was held. Not now used for this.
Castle gate was a bustling hub around 200 years ago but some empty shops here.
Salvation Army Citadel is beautiful building here. Gordon Highlanders statue is here as well.
Nearby is the Maritime Museum.

A nice place to walk past or through but the loss if some shops and the outdoor market has hit this area. The mercat cross is nice enough to look at and the Gordon highlanders statue too.

To the east of Union Street in Aberdeen is Castlegate, it is a small area but there is a lot to see in a relatively small space. The Salvation Army Citadel stands on the former site of the medieval Aberdeen Castle. Castlegate was named after the site of the castle gates until their demise in 1308.
The Mercat Cross is in the centre of Castlegate and has a hexagonal base and was built in 1686 by architect John Montgomery. The Gallowgate is just off the main square and is named after the site where the gallows were situated and is where public hangings used to take place.
Off the main square is the Castlegate Well which is no longer in use. On top of the disused well is a small bronze statue that was added by goldsmith William Lindsay. It is a fascinating area of the city and is a must see whilst in Aberdeen.

The castlegate is Aberdeen most iconic place, the view is magnificent, looking down union street from the top, it's amazing, and a great photo tourist hotspot!!!!
Then you take a look round the square shaped area and realise what a dump this is!!! Aberdeen council should be ashamed, surrounded by bookies, and downmarket pubs, I can only describe it as a tragedy, as a proud Aberdonian it's heartbreaking to see such an iconic place, surrounded by absolute rubbish!!

Went there to see the Mercat Cross, a must for unicorn lovers, and to see the Gordon Highlanders statue, a must for Gordons! Loved both and it was wonderfully not crowded. Ate at the Old Blackfriars and had the best waiter of our trip with a good selection of ales and food. Would definitely do again.

Terrible area full of drunks and druggies, seriously the council have got something badly wrong, spend money in stupid places and not improve the places that really could make a difference. Would make a really nice covered bar and cafe area (not the rubbish they have there at the moment ) . If you're visiting then avoid, avoid, avoid. If you don't I already feel embarrassed about how bad the council are.

An area to go if you want pestered by wino's and junkies. Once bustling but now virtually deserted thanks mostly to the undesirables that hang around this area.

sorry the picture on the left dont recognise it...did i get the wrong Castlegate ?
if its the one in town its a cold stark, grey, horrible, dangerous place. The new Gordon Highlanders statue is a disgrace it looks completely out of place. There was a big deal made of some revelers standing on it by the lord provost and the evening depress. In London and Edinburgh statues related to the war have been there for decades and revellers go on them all the time with no fuss.

This is an old square with many interesting buildings and many fascinating statues. It’s normally quite busy and this place is very underrated.
