Large sculpture of what I assumed was two gold balls. It intrigued me enough to research into the piece and discover a bit more about the history of Belfast and the meaning behind the structure.

It's a shame it's in the middle of a roundabout and we could only see it driving by. It would have been nice to visit the sculpture properly had it been situated somewhere accessible.

The Rise Sculpture is in the middle of the round about entering Belfast. I do not understand why it's in the center of the road. This is typical in Ulster

This modern sculpture, just off the M1 in Belfast, is meant to represent a new sun rising, to celebrate a new chapter in Belfast's history. It's nearly 40 meters high, and can be seen for miles around the city. I happened upon it while I was on the Falls Road last weekend, and had to wander down, for a closer inspection. It's impressive up close, but there are no signs or information of the sculpture in the vicinity, so it may be very confusing to tourists who seek it out. Don't be afraid to venture down to it, the locals are a very friendly bunch, and welcome visitors. Belfast has come a long way.

This is it, this is what modern art has come to. Its literally a GIANT BALL. Every time I enter this city I have to look at this giant ugly sphere like hello? What a giant waste of tax money that could have been spent on the NHS. Would not recommend visiting

Pointless, waste of money in my opinion. What is it even meant to be? As far as I can see there is nothing to tell you what it is. The land around it is covered in empty beer bottles and who knows what else. It's also situated on an interface and a slipway onto a motorway so don't know who's stupid idea that was.

Or the balls on the falls.
The sun rise catches the moment as you head out off the city at dawn and dusk. Really cool. Although still waiting on the first eejit to stick a fleg on top of it!.

Rise sculpture is an impressive one situated at one of the roundabout a little far from city center to the west of the city. There is no need to visit it unless you are passing through. If you do the city sightseeing bus tour, you will see it.

OK, is it any good? It is very big, and I like that in a work of art. It is sited in a place dominated by tower blocks, church spires, the massive Westlink road and its very tall street lights. For that reason 'Rise' needed to be big and tall to be noticed. Without research, it looks like its two concentric geodesic spheres, with some support struts. A smaller ball inside a bigger one. Meaning? The heart of something? An egg in a nest? It does make for an impressive thing up into the sky. I’m not sure if it is anything more than a geometric form, an architectural construction, as opposed to an artwork. OK, a web search says it symbolises a new Sun rising for the future of the city. That works. I like it, its fun to see this big, intriguing thing as you pass on the road below.

Attempting to visit this landmark, it isn't very well signposted. Most people come across it by accident when traversing the invisible boundary where the Westlink dual carriageway magically becomes the M1 motorway.

Access is ok, you can turn off at the broadway roundabout and it is right in front of you, however there is no onsite parking (other than for council/roadwork vans having a cheeky skive or police eating pastie suppers in the space marked "Maintenance vehicles only"). The nearest car parks are either the nearby Park Centre or McDonalds car parks.

Unfortunately the lanes for the access roads around the roundabout are like an MC Escher drawing, with lanes continually spiralling. Most locals ignore these road markings as mere suggestions and do their own thing. At times it felt like the roundabout scene from European Vacation.

We eventually got parked, there are crossings to allow the landmark to be visited on foot. Up close it is impressive, like a hollowed football skeleton suspended within the crystal maze endgame.

An added attraction, often overlooked, are the spikes, which look like those that keep pigeons away except on a larger scale. Perhaps to prevent pterodactyls from landing or trying to use the balls as some sort of dinosaur nest.

You can get some great photo opportunities of it up against the background of black mountain and an iceland supermarket, a derelict multistorey apartment block, a hospital boilerhouse or some advertising billboards.

Facilities wise, it isn't great. No souvenir shop, no cafe, no restrooms! The nearest foodcourt is the nearby McDonalds or KFC.

Worth visiting if you're passing (and if you drive in Belfast, you'll pass it at some point!) but not worth *going* to visit.

Well not much to say really apart from I think this may just be the best bird perch in the city! And a terrible waste of money!
