    Fascinating
Observed initially on the hop on hop off bus, and went back on foot. Fascinating wall art in the unionist area, tribute to HM the Queen and also homage to the King. I did not feel unsafe at all. People were friendly. Took a wander from here to the derilict Court House and the Jail. The street art continues on the walls in the surrounding area.

    A Piece of History
I remember seeing the news during the 1980's and hearing about the Troubles between the two rival factions in Northern Ireland. At the time it seemed like such a dangerous place to a youngster. Following the Good Friday Agreement a truce was reached and peace has been established throughout the province. A real symbol of this is the Peace Wall which is not far from Shankill Road and worth checking out if you are also interested in visiting Shankill Road. Shankill Road is in the protestant area of the city and is a long straight road. On various sides of the road there are murals on the sides of buildings and many remember people who died during the Troubles. It's worth taking a walk along here and I would suggest also visiting Falls Road on the other side of the Peace Wall to get another side of how people felt. Long May Peace Reign!

    GREAT EXPERIENCE
The tour bus took us through The Falls, Peace Wall & Shankhill Road. The murals are worth seeing. They mentioned later tours were detoured because of a parade, so we decided to get off and attend - it didn't disappoint. We certainly didn't feel unwelcome or unsafe, was a great atmosphere, surrounded by friendly, down to earth people.

Those interested in the recent history of Northern Ireland and its Troubles should visit both the Falls Road and the Shankill. The Shankill Road is festooned with wall murals, monuments, shrines etc; everywhere you turn.
Still, better that the two sides paint than fight.

Don't be put off by the negative reviews of visiting the Shankill Road. We went today on the public bus and walked around the area. Found the locals to be very friendly and very helpful. And we did it for a fraction of the price of a black cab tour or tour bus. Ok you don't get the expertise of the guided tours, but I found the locals more than happy to tell you about the various murals and memorials. All in all a good day out.

Th Shankill Road is the Unionist area of Belfast. It was a hot-spot during the Troubles. Thank goodness, the Troubles are behind us. The Shankill Road still has some reminders of times past; the murals are evocative of this troubled time in Ulster's history. Shankill Road is still a unionist stronghold, but visitors are more likely to have a drink rather than a fight. These days, visitors are welcome.

What a terrible place. Steeped in hatred for all things Irish & Catholic. On April 7th some youths saw fit to start a riot because they were directed by local paramilitaries to do so. Set fire to a bus.

Loved walking around Shankill Road, there are plenty of shops, pubs etc. I was horrified to pay £3.10 for a portion of chips though. I don't know if that is the norm in Belfast but that.s a total rip off.

We walked Shankill road and enjoyed the many murals on the sides of buildings and stopped at a few local pubs. A nice day.

Those of us who live there are still finding it hard to come to terms with the Shankill Road as a tourist destination. In recent years, however, the Greater Shan kill area has become just that. We’ve always had Twelfth and weekend visitors from Scotland, but these are a new type of visitor, usually young backpackers. Tour buses and specially adapted black taxis ply the road in summer. I often see them parked at the end of my street as visitors from around the world listen to their guide’s description of the loyalist paramilitary murals on the gable end wall.

Now such visitors can peruse their own free guide to the Greater Shankill district. This guide is a large folding map on which are marked significant features. Of course, as a resident myself, I know about most of these but there were a few surprises for me too. I never knew that the big semi-derelict house opposite Woodvale Park was once the home of the notorious D I Nixon, nor did I realise that the oldest pub in the area - the Rex Bar - is supposed to be haunted. The only spirits I’ve seen around there come in bottles!

On the other side is a potted history of the Shankill district, a piece on the local importance of Orangeism and a timetable of festivals and parades. There are also adverts for the Fernhill House Museum and some local businesses. Free copies are available from Ulster Souvenirs, the Greater Shankill Partnership offices and the Belfast Welcome Centre.
