This was one of the best experiences of my life and I will never forget it!

Me and my friends did the go below ultimate xtreme on the 14th of February 2024, it was amazing and I will most likely go back sometime soon!

It’s well worth the money and will have you wanting to do it again and again, our guides were all fantastic!

Pete, Iain and Aiden were spectacular and very informative they were all very friendly and kept us safe while we got to enjoy the beauty of that mine and by the end I didn’t want to leave!

I’ll also give a massive shoutout to Aiden who let me talk his ear off and reassured me that I could take it at my own pace, I had a incredible time talking with him and you can really tell he’s passionate about what he does!

A top tip! Bring a waterproof coat and trouser covers it really is needed especially in the rainy season!

Thank you go-below for a live changing adventure, I can’t wait to visit again!

This pushed me totally out of my comfort zone and without having two amazing instructors, Mark and Ian I couldn't ever imagined having completed anything like this.
I would so recommend it, if you want fun, laughter, and to really open your eyes to what mining life was like go do it.

Last July, me and my boyfriend did the Ultimate Xtreme trip, lead by Jonty and Ian. They were amazing guides, encouraging us all the way whilst being able to have a laugh and properly engage with everyone on the trip. They were also extremely informative about the history of the mines and the working conditions, which was really interesting to hear about. The experience itself was absolutely amazing, nothing compares to it! I have previously completed one of the other go below trips with my family, and it was just as exciting this time as it was the last, if not, then better. Thank you so much to Jonty and Ian for the amazing trip! We will definitely be revisiting again one day!

Initially booked onto the Challenge trip as a surprise for my partners birthday as I am not a great lover of heights so was worried the other two may be a bit too much for me but knew my partner would love any of them. 3 days before we were due to go I was phoned by the company to say it was only us booked on to the trip so it wouldn’t be going ahead. Initially I was slightly disappointed I was contacted so last minute as I’d paid in full for accommodation in the area at this point so was not flexible on dates. However as we couldn’t change dates we were provided with the option of upgrading to the ultimate extreme free of charge. This turned out to be the best thing that could’ve happened. Pete and Ron were our expert guides for the day and there was only 6 of us on the trip which was a great number. The day was one of the most challenging but rewarding activities both myself and my partner have ever taken part in. From the very start to the end there was barely a minute we weren’t doing something crazy from transverses to zip lines to balancing along a pipe trying not to fall into water. The whole day was absolutely brilliant and with the encouragement from the guides I even managed the freefall at the end of the trip which is something I’d have never thought I could do. My partner absolutely relished the challenges and is already wanting to go back for a second run at it all. We could not recommend this trip enough for someone looking for that something a bit different with all the excitement and challenges with it and if you are lucky enough to have Pete and Ron as your guides then you will without a doubt have one of the best experiences possible!

We’re so glad to hear that you had a wonderful time on your Ultimate Xtreme and that your partner enjoyed their birthday trip with us. We’re so pleased to hear that you felt supported and safe throughout the experience and that you would recommend the trip to others. Pete and Ron will be thrilled to hear that with their encouragement, you felt confident enough to complete the freefall and that you had such a fantastic time with us! We’ll be sure to pass on your lovely words to them, they’ll be so pleased to hear you both enjoyed yourselves so thoroughly.

The trip was amazing, we did the ultimate xtreme, the perfect amount of challenging but not so stressful it ruins it. aThe instructors pete and Ron were so lovely and knowledgeable, really kind towards more nervous members of the group and supportive. We had an absolutely amazing day, so worth every penny and felt really looked after but at the same time able to do our own thing and not babied. Thank you so much guys

I signed up for this for some research (for a book) but didn't realise what it would entail. Initially it was a shock to the system - I should have read and prepared for it mentally - but it was such a blast. Really invigorating, scary, and wonderful. It pushed me out of my comfort zone and that was exhilarating. My group was lovely and the team leader, Janine, was just so fab - made us feel safe, told us lots of history and was fun to be with. Unique experience to sleep in a mine and wonderful way to start the year!

Jeanine will be so pleased to hear that you enjoyed her company throughout and that you felt safe and had a lovely time learning about the mine. We’re so pleased that you ventured out of your comfort zone and loved it!

OMG, the most amazing place I have ever lay my head. Arriving at Tanygrisau base on a dark drizzly December, the weather did not look inviting. Promptly at 1700 our guide, Andy, rocks up. We are quickly kitted out with lights for the 30 min walk up to the Cwmorthin Mines Office. The path is quite steep in places, and slippy on the slate, the walk is accompanied by the thundering of the river running next to the path. At the mines office Andy kitted everyone with boots, helmet and harnesses and we were off.
The entrance to the mine sits another 50m past the office, a large metal gate securely fastened is opened and you step inside to begin the 1 - 1 1/2hr trek to the Deep Sleep Experience. Andy gives everyone a briefing on what to expect and how the equipment is to be used to ensure your safety. Having spent plenty of time down mines this place really enthralled me from the start but my wife was a little dubious, never really being underground before apart from a few show caves. She soon got into it though and started to really enjoy the whole experience. The trip starts with a couple of descents down manways then a crossing over the remains of a tramway, adits stretch off in every direction begging to be explored but that will be another trip. After descending a couple of floors we come to a section where you literally put your life in Andys' hands as he lowers you down a 50' drop. From here, there are a few sections with deeper water but using pegs in the wall and scaffold pipes you can keep pretty dry. The descent passes quite quickly and definitely doesn't feel like over an hour, all the way Andy gives you some of the history of the mine a subject you can tell he is well versed in.
Eventually you reach "Deep Sleep", no amount of looking at pics or video can do it justice, it is amazing to walk in to chamber 39 (maybe38) and be confronted by 4 sleep "pods" and a well lit canteen with the kettle boiling. Deep Sleep gets its power from a bank of batteries charged by 2 mini hydro electric setups in the mine. They are also connected to the surface by a wifi cable, a back up genny and a phone system that will still operate even if Deep Sleep loses all power. We dekitted and everyone got a brew, a choice of chocolate, tea or coffee and plenty of biscuits. Miles was in charge of the Deep Sleep area, he had journeyed down earlier in the day to prep for our arrival . He briefed us all on the accommodation ,heating, toilet, dinner choices and all important emergency procedures.
After selecting our menu choices from the dehydrated expedition food , Andy then took a few of us for a little wander and to try out one of the many ziplines fitted in Cwmorthin. Then it was back to base for dinner, the rest of the evening was spent, eating, drinking tea, no alcohol allowed for safety reasons, and chatting with the other guests, quite an eclectic mix.
My wife and I had booked the grotto, this is reached over a little bridge and down an adit away from the main area. This "grotto" has to be seen to be believed. A very comfy double bed sat between 2 side tables with small side lights. the room also has a little wash stand with water supplied piping hot in a handy flask. Lay in bed in the total, total darkness, with the only sound a tick-tock from the wall clock it is weird to think the surface is 1375ft above you, you don't dwell on it long though as the pre heated bed soon welcomes you into a very relaxing sleep.
The next morning starts with a buffet breakfast served at 0830, then 0900 we set off for the surface, coming out a different route so you get to experience a lot more of Cwmorthin and its history, as I said before Andy really knows his stuff. Arriving back on the surface shortly after 1000 we put all our kit back in the Mines Office and headed back down the hill to Tanygrisau Base. It is amazing to see the mountains of slate that stretch of in every direction , Andy informed us that for every 10 ton mined only about 1 ton was actually used which leaves behind these mountain of wastage.
At the bottom of the hill there is a little cafe "Lakeside Cafe2 which does do a cracking fried breakfast.

Thank you for leaving such a detailed review of your experience while on our Deep Sleep trip with Andy and Miles! Your review gives such a wonderful sense of what the Deep Sleep journey is like. It’s lovely to hear that you were immediately immersed in the mine environment, and despite her initial reservations your wife began to enjoy the entire experience. We’re so pleased to know that you felt safe throughout the journey down, and that you enjoyed the history of Cwmorthin that Andy provided throughout the trip. It’s great to hear that the journey down the mine to G floor and the Deep Sleep chamber seemed to pass quickly with the combination of the activities undertaken along with the mine facts that Andy had for the group. It’s wonderful to hear that you found Deep Sleep amazing to see in person, and that you enjoyed staying in the grotto and that you had a lovely restful sleep over your stay. Thank you for such a fantastically detailed review, as well as sharing your pictures from the experience, Andy and Miles will be so thrilled to hear you had such a lovely time with them!

What a fantastic night. Took my mate for his 50th birthday present we both loved it jonty was fantastic leader and so knowledgeable on the mine and when you arrive at camp nick was a fantastic host never left wanting for anything. The cabins are hot maybe too hot but what a trip abseiling and zip wire in a slate mine and then to sleep 1400ft below the mountain best nights sleep I have had in ages. I took birthday cake down with me and it survived for nick to surprise my mate after dinner with candles and singing thank you.
