- Myke ACarlisle, United Kingdom115 contributionsMagical DaySuch an interesting day out, taking in such an ancient piece of history. The exhibition is well laid out with lots of interesting details to learn, including the roundhouses. As for the stones themselves, just breathtaking. The shop and cafe are top notch and worth a visit whilst you’re thereVisited January 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 26 January 2024
- Debbie1SBHaywards Heath, United Kingdom164 contributionsWet Half-Term visit, but lovely experience. The Visitor Centre, restaurant, and gift shop are all excellent, although the queues at the restaurant and toilets were very long (half term). Do leave enough time to see and absorb everything at the centre because it’s worth it. The staff were very helpful and had my pre-ordered guidebook ready for us. It was very dog friendly too. You can choose to walk or grab a shuttle from the Visitor Centre to the Stonehenge site itself, but note that dogs, while well catered for otherwise, are not allowed on the shuttle or on the path around the stones. We enjoyed the walk, although the kids less so (it was raining!), and most of them chose the return shuttle. Amazing to see the stones in person for the first time, although I imagine the more immersive “up close” experiences would have been much better. It was also crowded, which made it all feel a bit impersonal. Recommend visiting on a quieter day, I expect that would have been more special.Visited October 2023Travelled with familyWritten 5 February 2024
- Emma TondoBologna, Italy387 contributionsSite organized and well contextualizedIt is beautiful to observe this place with the changing light of the day, even if you don't know the nature of the work. In general, I believe that a nice exhibition itinerary has been organised: it is a museum antechamber to the visit to the site and which helps the visitor to contextualise the monument. I also found the shop and the refreshment area clean and welcoming. We had a beautiful day.Visited January 2024Travelled with friendsWritten 10 February 2024
- SanjutravelerUnited Kingdom59 contributionsMysterious StonehengeIt was an unforgettable experience traveling to mysterious Stonehenge we took bus ride for 18.50 each. It was an audio guided tour with mesmerising views of green lands. We reached destination and saw many people at the ticket entrance for bus to Stonehenge it was 23ÂŁ for each. Instead of bus ticket we would suggest to take a free public walk which is only 2 km. You can reach closer and take photos.Visited February 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 10 February 2024
- JoandgrahamOxford, United Kingdom495 contributionsExpensive for a couple of hours visitAs National Trust members we got free entry and I’m really pleased as at £25/ head admission I think we would have been disappointed. As with previous reviewers, I last visited as a child and had memories of climbing the stones and getting really close to history. I absolutely appreciate why that is no longer allowed but it does mean viewing from a distance. We walked from the Visitor Centre which was about 20mins, though the shuttle bus is a great option. Once you’ve taken a look there really isn’t much else. The museum gives the history and there are a few artefacts and a mock up of the huts that might have been lived in at the time of construction. A nice cafe but really not a huge amount else. Worth seeing but not a cheap day out.Visited February 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 14 February 2024
- lesley m12 contributionsAn awe-inspiring visitFantastic visit, kids loved it. The visitors centre is good for children as it gives some basic info around the stones, what they would have looked like complete, why/how they may have been built etc. If you're a National Trust member you can get in for FREE. We walked to the stones and caught the handy bus back again. There is an English Heritage app for the tour - download it, well worth a listen as it explores aspects of Henge plus the landscape. You can walk around Stonehenge on the public footpaths and skip the visitors centre, but you're quite far back from the stones and can't walk all the way around, so if you're only going to go once or for the first time - buy a ticket! Plus you'll be supporting English Heritage who are preserving the monument for the future.Visited February 2024Travelled with familyWritten 15 February 2024
- mariacave27Taunton, United Kingdom76 contributionsLoved our visit. We are National Trust members and able to use our membership to visit Stonehenge. We enjoyed looking around the exhibition, walked down to the stones and got the bus back, great to have the buses there if you want to use them. Plenty of on site parking and toilets. My only criticism is that I don't like it when you are being served for drink/food and the staff serving you are having a private conversation between themselves, the food and coffee were great though. I had the curried vegetable pasty, it was delicious. Would certainly visit again.Visited February 2024Travelled with familyWritten 18 February 2024
- patrickcsmith3London, United Kingdom122 contributionsStonehenge -A place of unification of Neothic People with their CosmosThe day we choose to visit the Neolithic Stonehenge was a rainswept one, across the whole gusty Salisbury Plain, that would still remain barren of people today but for the million visitors each year, who make the pilgrimage to the inscrutable Stonehenge Circle dating circa 2600BC. It was evdent that there were no English Heritage voluntary guides at the Stonehenge monuments to provide us with any insights into their purpose or reason for the existence of this remakable monument. Our Neolithic ancestors were intent on celebrating the transport of their most revered pagan leaders from the spiritual living to the place of permanent burial at this most ancient grave yard in England. Fortunatley, I jhad read the excellent review of Stonehenge-Exploring the Greatest Stone Age Muystery- Mike Parker Pearson 2012 and his perceptive insights into the Neolithic monument of unification of groups of people with their beliefs and linked with the symetery of the summer and winter solstices.. Stonehenge was for a period of several hundred years a place of expressing the strongest feelings of life and bereavment for honoured Neothic Leaders and will never cease to suspend our powers of human immagination as to why it was built.Visited February 2024Travelled with familyWritten 24 February 2024
- Jim HearsonLondon, United Kingdom193 contributionsBucket list item: doneThis was the main reason I visited Salisbury - it's like visiting the Great Pyramid if you go to Cairo or the Acropolis if you find yourself in Athens; it needs to be done. There's good signage around explaining things and there's an audio guide available from the visitor centre if you want to find out more. That said, you don't have to go to the visitor centre to gain entry - if you've already got a ticket, you can walk/cycle from Amesbury (or Salisbury, if you're feeling brave), enter the site from the east and a friendly English Heritage person will let you in.Visited February 2024Travelled soloWritten 25 February 2024
- MarkymisfitChester, United Kingdom163 contributionsBest experienced via the wild walkArrived with friends for our second family visit to the iconic stones. We were greeted by one of the volunteers Neville, who was absolutely fantastic and set up our afternoon perfectly! The exhibition was great, with lots of global context and interesting artefacts. We then walked the countryside route to Stonehenge which allows you to view the broader landscape in a Neolithic context which brings the monument to life. The henge itself is smaller than you expect, but the other barrows mean the overall scene is well worth exploring and understanding!Visited February 2024Travelled with friendsWritten 25 February 2024

I had wanted to visit since I was little and on the way back from a short break we made the effort to go and I was not disappointed.
As we are English Heritage members it was free to get in but we still booked in advance the night before as it gets very busy. As Members we were also given free audio guides to use. The children got a horrible history’s version that was very entertaining.
I had heard that you now couldn’t get anywhere near the site but I was pleasantly surprised by how close you were aloud.
We also visited the cafe and the food was very good and a reasonable price.
The gift shop was fab with lots of different items from Barbara clothing made especially for Stonehenge to pencils and book marks.

Thanks so much for leaving your review - we're really pleased Stonehenge didn't disappoint and you enjoyed the whole site!
You're right - you can get close to the stones on an ordinary visit: you're only 5m from the circle at some points on the path which offers some great photo opportunities!
Just for clarity, we have an exclusive Stonehenge Barbour (rather than Barbara!) range in our gift shop.
Thanks so much again!

We visited with a 5 and 9 yr old and I was very excited as I have always wanted to visit Stonehenge. We booked a timed entry beforehand and I was very impressed by how it was all managed with covid safety measures. Staff checked we had pre booked as we entered the car park, then we queued at the appropriate distance before getting our entry tickets. Next came the wonderful exhibition which again was closely monitored by staff (masks worn). This was fascinating from the 360 degree screen putting you in the centre of the stones, to the artifacts found on site. Truly amazing and informative. It takes you on a journey from before it was built to present day and leaves you to decide on it's original purpose. There is a small neolithic village showing how the builders of stonehenge might have lived before you head off on the walk to the stones themselves. The walk is stunning! There is a bus shuttle that regularly runs if you aren't up for a 30 min walk, but I recommend the walk through stunning farmland and ancient woodland. It's great that the stones are well away from the commercial part, the shop and cafe and car park. The stones are awe-inspiring and so magical. The path takes you up close and you can get a 360 look at them. Plenty of time for photos. I think they have done a great job coping with covid and the staff were fantastic. 100% recommended!! Don't think twice, just go.

We did the Stone Circle Experience (ÂŁ50 pp) which takes you inside the circle itself in a group of up to 30 and with an English Heritage Guide. You go in after it closes for the day and you really do feel like you have the place to yourself. You book the tours through the English Heritage website and it is definitely worth the extra. Our family are still talking about it. Chris, our English heritage tour guide was brilliant and told us about the circle, its history and events that took place there. We were there as the sun set and to think it was 4500 years of history was really thought provoking.

So we booked last minute as we were only going to drive by but then got talking and realised neither of us had actually been.
When we pulled up, they asked for prebooked tickets only, so were sent around to a lay-by where staff helped us book on a third party site because the English heritage had sold out already.
They were expecting 2,000 visitors that day, a week day. We booked and parked at the advice of helpful and friendly staff.
Car park was nice and accessible. Then went through the one way system to the ticket office after being greeted by more helpful staff. They saw our tickets online and exchanged to paper ones. Keep these with you as you need them again at the top!
First is the toilets and the shops and the cafe, which are all nice with helpful friendly staff and clean facilities. Face masks to be worn in all of them!
Then begins a 2.5k walk through the cornfields to the top and then a short circuit around the stones, which are amazing! You get really close and can take many beautiful photos regardless of all the people there.
Then comes another 2.5k walk back to the bottom where the exhibition is and the other things mentioned earlier. Wear comfy shoes and take a good camera or charge your phone battery because if your fam is anything like mine you’ll want to jump on the hay bales and have a play!
Please note that there are free busses going up to the stones and back down too so you don’t actually need to walk either way. Id recommend walking at least there though so you can experience it if you’re able to do so.
Social distancing now on busses too, face masks to be worn. Not a lot of people on the busses allowed but the staff will let you on and tell you where to sit.
All in all it was a lovely couple of hours spent, and that’s without visiting the shop, cafe or exhibit. Allow more time to do everything!

Myself and my partner attended the 6pm Stonehenge Inner Circle Tour, and I can truly say that it was one of the most magical experiences of my life. The tour is excellent, and is the perfect amount of standing and listening to information from the tour guide (Chris was funny, incredibly well informed and just an excellent tour guide), and being allowed to freely roam and appreciate the site. Going at 6-7 was incredible and watching the colours of the sunset across the stones was beautiful. If you have any interest in Archaeology, henges, or even just the beauty of our English history I HIGHLY recommend this experience and it is worth every single penny spent. Thank you.

We decided to go for the Stone Circle Experience to get to walk amongst the stones for an hour before the general public were admitted. The ticket price includes full day entry to the entire exhibition so you can stay.
Very well organised. Met at the car park by a volunteer. Then again at the visitor centre and directed to the bus. Social distancing was good on the bus and all guests wore their masks. My one concern was that staff that were exempt didn’t wear a face shield instead while on the bus talking, as a healthcare worker I would have liked to have seen this implemented for everyone’s safety.
The guide, Chris, was very knowledgeable and friendly. Loud enough to hear at the back, which is what you want in a guide! He took the time to organise us so that everyone stood on the path to take pictures with no one in the circle before we stepped over the barrier. Little touches like this make a great tour.
Once inside we could roam about and ask questions. We got to spend an hour inside the stones and this was plenty of time to see everything. Everyone in the group was considerate and I got most of my photos with no one else in them. Magical!
I would highly recommend going before the cruise ships start up again. The place was empty! No crowds. No jostling for a spot. The volunteers were keen to chat as there was no one there. Loads of parking right by the visitor centre and loads of room on the bus to the stones.
There are toilets at the visitor centre before you go through the ticket stalls. A cafe to the left as you go in that has limited socially distanced seating and a small range of hot drinks and snacks. There is a large gift shop with a wide range of gifts (currently a Christmas sale going on).
The flat, even path around the stones would be suitable for a wheelchair user and buggies but I’m not sure the Stone Circle Experience would be as you go onto the grass for that. The bus to the stones is also set up for wheelchair users as is the visitor centre generally. I didn’t visit the exhibition hall so cannot comment.

It’s worth a visit but if your reasonably healthy not worth paying the £25 or so per head which gets you a coach ride and a few meters closer and a 360 view.
You can walk to Stonehenge for FREE via the visitors centre it’s around 25-30mins with a minor ascent. Easily done. There is also a lane closer to the site (Fargo Rd) if you can find it, which will cut the walk out. Try Googling it. There were loads of vans and people walking to the site.
Once you walk there there is a fence which keeps you at a few meters distance from paid customers but it’s still spectacular.
I went at the end of the day around 5.30pm and there was hardly anyone there. Really lovely if you want to avoid crowds.
The visitors centre serves lovely food and there is a fab gift shop which sell all sorts of crud to commemorate your visits.
The A303 always has queuing cars as there is a view of Stonehenge from there as you drive past, it moves though, just people rubbernecking.

Decided to take a trip to Stonehenge with friends, they booked tickets for us. Got there & they don’t take NTScotland cards as most other NT places do! So we stumped up £46.50 to enter. I don’t have issue paying but it really is NOT worth that much. All you get for it is a 5 min ride on a bus up to the stones (which are fenced off for safety & preservation) a walk round & a 5 min bus ride back! As I said friends had booked tickets, they checked in, all correct so we went for the bus. One of the staff let us through to the bus & stopped our friends & asked for receipt for proof of payment, they said they had checked in & showed her the ticket on the phone, she said that’s no good, need a receipt . They told her they hadn’t been given one, so then promptly said, maybe you dropped it, or maybe they didn’t wait long enough to get the receipt?? She was awful. Anyway, they went back inside to check it all out & they had difficulty getting a receipt as it was an e-ticket. It was absolutely crazy. She then said the bus goes every 5 mins to the stones so we got on & 15 mins later we were still sitting there waiting to go! The rude woman kept us waiting whilst the bus filled up . She also spoke to a couple & child in a pushchair like they were idiots, she was awful & a real jobs worth!
We finally get to the stones & had a good look around but that’s it. Got the bus back (with only 6 of us on it!) can only get out via the uber-expensive shop! Decided to go for tea & cake but the prices were absolutely criminal…..I mean £3.95 for a small Rock cake! Needless to say, we left. It’s daylight robbery! I don’t mind paying to support these places but I didn’t actually want to purchase an actual stone!!
Sadly, it’s a big fat no from us, it’s really sad as the stones are an incredible sight but that’s all, there’s nothing else really, nothing that I think is worth £23 entrance fee per person & then to be fleeced in the shop & cafe & rude, obnoxious staff. You really need to do better to warrant the entrance fee.

It's such an iconic place it's difficult to give a fresh review. We booked on one of the special visits where you're in a small group and can go inside the stone circles. We'd been once before on a normal visit (well worth it - go on the first time slot to get to see it without the crowds).
It felt good to be inside the circle - our guide Cecelia was a fount of knowledge and and question prompted a detailed response. You do get a different view of things from inside and you can see better where things align and fit together.
We enjoyed being inside but if the cost puts you off then go for the "walkaround it" tour - either way you'll have a great experience.

We have a budding 10 year old historian and as a result our adventures lead us to Stonehenge! We got they’re early (10am) and started the walk to the stones, beautiful sites and lovely views. Some of informational panels along the walk. It was lovely seeing the lambs and sheep, and watching Stonehenge come into view in the horizon was very exciting.
The walk around the stones was amazing ! You can get close enough to feel connected but the rope prevents touching the stones, enabling them to be preserved for future generations. We had to audio tour downloaded onto our phones, although outdated (2014) it provided some interesting information. Lots of places to sit and picnic around the stones too.
The museum was well worth a visit too, lots of information and the photo of the stones exhibit too, seeing the stones through the years in peoples own photos was amazing.
Shop is one of the best English heritage I’ve been to, I recommend a small fortune for all the books you’ll want to take home alone!
Staff are friendly, and knowledgable. One of the best sites I’ve been too!

Hello! I booked an Uber from Avesbury to Stonehenge in advance but was wondering if this is a reliable way to get from one place to another. I already booked the entry to Stonehenge for 16:30, so wouldn't want the Uber to be cancelled at the last minute. Any advice will be appreciated.

In a few weeks I will spend the night in Amesbury and won't have a car. I was planning to go on foot to Stonehenge, since it is just 3 km, but the path would involve the A303, or so it appears. Is there a footpath alongside it perhaps?

We took a taxi from Amesbury to Stonehenge for about GBP15. As I recall, the road was very narrow and traffic heavy. I did not see a separate foot path.
You will have a chance to walk a lot on site.

Evening all. Can you actually get close to the stones and if so, how close?
Thank you

Although there is a fence between you and the stones it does not stop the view and you can see and feel quite close to the stones even though you are about 25 metres from the stones. The experience is definitely worth going to experience.

I hope this makes sense but is there any advantage to purchasing a 'skip the line' ticket vs booking a standard ticket online through English Heritage? It seems you'll need to wait in a line when you arrive regardless, correct?

I accidentally booked for the wrong time (not the wrong date). Am I able to show up earlier?
Written 26 January 2023
Hi,
As far as I know you can turn up earlier on, however it can be at discretion of the decision makers for safety reasons and the availability of the attraction!
Hope it helps,
Melissa

Is there a cost to look at stonehenge? We will be driving ourselves. Is there a parking lot? Thanks!

Lots of space to park your car. I recommend that you check at what hour there is the least visitors. It will lessen your time in queues for the parking lot and the entrance

Looking to do a half day inner circle access morning tour from London and back. There will be 4 of us traveling in July 2023. Can anyone direct me to a good tour for this? (I’m finding full day tours that include Bath or Windsor online but no half day just Stonehenge inner circle with transportation.) If a half day can’t be had including transportation from London can you still recommend a good tour for morning inner circle out of Bath or other nearby town? Thanks!

We used Mad Max out of Bath. They were great. Might check their website to see if they have tours out of London.

Does the Stonehenge tour bus ticket include the entrance to Stonehenge and Old Sarum?
Written 8 January 2022
No, both Old Sarum and Stonehenge are separate English Heritage sites with separate tickets and entry requirements for both. The sites are about 10 miles away from each other. I hope that helps?
