Walked through many times when I lived there and if there is a good musician then they get great sounds within.

If you're wandering - as I was - from the university back to the station, leave the main thoroughfares and try the back streets. It's worth it.

My favourite was the indoor market. Bit of a hidden gem amidst all the usual shops on the surrounding streets. The market offers the usual stalls but also a little 'French' Bakery, several sandwich/pasty/pies stalls but also some Oriental and Mediterranean little takeaways. The indoor market is actually a beautiful building. The other building I liked was the Central Arcade.... More

It is a mixed bag of places to shop and depending on what you wanted it may match or may not match what you are after. What I do like is the Victorian architecture.

It's full of shops, but don't bother looking in the windows, look up, look around! So much architecture from newcastle's hay-day!

Grainger Town is the old part of Newcastle and has the old-style Victorian and earlier architecture, some of it sadly in need of repair. We spoke to some draymen who were delivering to one of the many bars along here and they assured us that all these buildings are listed Grade II and cannot be demolished. But we were unhappy... I decided to look up Tripadvisor reviews because of the photo that accompanies the listing. I read the first page of reviews and almost all refer to some shopping arcade. Grainger Town is not just a shopping arcade. It occupies some blocks and is notable for the collection of buildings done in a similar style. It is not mind-boggling but... More

This is a wonderful building and full of character. Please look up at the wonderful architecture and forget about the shops as there is so much to see.

Nice old arcade style shopping area, very well preserved. We were there on a Sunday morning so not much open. Great example of architecture from the turn of the last century. Cuts through from Grey Street.

We stumbled upon this while shopping on a busy Saturday afternoon in Newcastle. It's stunning inside but lacked any atmosphere as no one was there shopping. Felt like about to close down for lack of trade.
