About
Newcastle Castle, nestled in the heart of Newcastle, is where the story of the city began and the origin behind its name. Steeped in history, this imposing Norman fortress is a rugged reminder of northern England's turbulent history. This was no baron's stately home, but rather a place where armies gathered and criminals were imprisoned and executed. Newcastle Castle consists of two buildings which are both open to the public to explore - the Black Gate and the Castle Keep - as well as offering some of the most spectacular views over the city and the River Tyne Newcastle has to offer.

- FionaG350Poole, United Kingdom301 contributionsAn amazing view but perhaps overpriced at ÂŁ10 entrance feeI had a free day in Newcastle and the first thing I did was visit this castle. It is small (and perhaps therefore a little overpriced at ÂŁ10). There are a lot of steps! I would hate to be there during a busy period as there are very few passing places. There are a couple of rooms to view on the way up (the Great Hall, the Solar etc). The view is worth the trek to the top. Then it is back down to the dungeon and the chapel. There is also a small museum in the Black Gate. When I was leaving I did pass an elderly lady with a walking stick struggling up the entrance steps and I did wonder whether I should warn her that inside are steps and more steps. Every castle is different and this is a compact variety.Thank you for your comment Fiona! - Gerben v1 contributionBest city to be in the WorldI have my own company for almost 25 years and I have seen the whole world, been to many different countries and places but Newcastle is the best place to be. What I really like about this city is the friendly peolpe arround here. You can sit at a bar not knowning anybody and people start talking with you and at the end of the evening you get a hug from somebody you have never ever seen or met before. It is a fact that the wau you go up North, the moe friendly the become. I really love this city and the people love live within. Best place to be after so many years travelling all over the WorldVisited March 2024Travelled on businessWritten 9 March 2024
- Charles R36 contributionsA sight well worth seeingAt last after passing the castle on the train several times, I finally managed to visit it. I would have liked to have done a tour but unfortunately none was available while we were there. Having said that, there is information enough to help you get an idea of how the castle functioned through the ages.Hi Charles, thank you for your kind words and amazing 5-star review! - Adam TYork, United Kingdom909 contributionsCool visit if you’re prepared for the stairsWe had pre-booked our visit online without fully appreciating just how many stairs there would be in the main castle section. Ordinarily this would have been no problem for us, but carrying up a 16 month old the same volume of stairs makes it slightly more strenuous, particularly when they are so steep. Thankfully, we were able to leave our pushchair in the shop at the Black Gate while we went over the road to the main castle. Not before having a quick look around the top floor of the Black Gate which had its own mini exhibition. Overall we enjoyed our visit (the views at the top of the castle were worth the climb), and if we were in the area again we may use the ticket again since it was annual, but I wouldn’t go out of my way to come more than once. In the end we probably spent around 1.5 hours there between the two sites.Hi, thank you for your review and feedback! We are glad you enjoyed your visit, despite the stairs, and hope to see you again soon.Written 29 May 2024This response is the subjective opinion of the management representative and not of Tripadvisor LLC.Visited September 2023Travelled with familyWritten 24 May 2024
- Brian MNewcastle upon Tyne, United Kingdom66 contributionsGreat and instructive visit.I'm a local, but haven't visited the Castle since my childhood. I can honestly say I found the experience as exciting as I did as a child and enjoyed the views from the castle much more. This was a great experience with much to see and much to learn from the excellent signage provided. There were a few visitors besides ourselves, but not too many that it had any effect on our enjoyment of the experience. Be warned, there are lots of steps which need to be climbed so as to enjoy Castle Keep to the full. Great experience and a perfectly reasonable price for tickets relative to today's prices. I'm tempted to revisit soon. Kids of all ages would love this.Hi, thank you so much for your 5-star review and kind words! We are thrilled you enjoyed your visit and look forward to seeing you again soon.Written 9 September 2024This response is the subjective opinion of the management representative and not of Tripadvisor LLC.Visited September 2024Travelled with friendsWritten 6 September 2024

We didn't expect much to be honest, but were pleasantly surprised with our little trip.
The remains are so interesting and the information boards are really great to read. It gives a very cool window into Newcastle's past and we really enjoyed it.
The age of some of the remains is baffling, and you can see the walls throughout the city if you go on a bit of a walk.
The installation of PVC windows looks a bit weird and out of place on the castle, but nonetheless we thought it was a great little bit of fun.

Newcastle has a castle. Off course it does, yet this tends not to be the first thing that springs to mind about the city. Maybe because the castle became strategically less relevant in than others, maybe because the site use altered over time, or maybe because the coming of the railways cut the plot in two.
Which is why English Heritage now have a modest gatehouse reception and small exhibition marooned from the more impressive keep. Signage between the two areas could be better, although that may require some help from other land owners. But the keep is 100% worth seeing, with The Black Gate serving as a reasonable appetizer. The chapel, cellar and main hall are superb, and careful climbing of the spiral stone staircase gives onto a 360 panorama with quite possibly the best view of the iconic Tyne bridge in the city. A must see attraction in any visit here.

If you love history and if you like to know more about Newcastle you should visit this place. Entry fees will be applicable still it worth if you like to know about the history. The Black Gate was built non AD 1247 which is still their . Near to this tyne bridge and a railway track is going through a bridge that's also amazing. If you visit Newcastle don't miss this place because history will always speak about the county.

Big thanks to Will at The Keep.
My wife had major lung surgery last year...so we’ve been desperately trying to get out and about again after lockdown.
We foned the castle, to be told not open on Tue or Wed (the 2 days we’d booked for a short break to Newcastle & area)
Will foned us back later to say he would be working inside the Keep, that we could walk around on Tuesday afternoon....as an exception, cause he was working on site.
We were delighted!
Having arrived, Will appraised us of all CV procedure, got on with his work...allowing us to have a look around the castle all by ourselves.
It was really great - Will was so kind and helpful.
Thank you Will, very grateful and we both thought the Keep was fantastic - wonderful history, FABULOUS views across the city from battlements.

The castle is somewhat truncated with the main rail line running through the middle of it. The main part of the keep is intact and you can wander around to your hearts content as it is pretty big. There are informaiotn panels inside about the famous former occupants and incredible views across the city from the roof.

Visited here 24th August. Had a wheelchair with us. Most of the staff were helpful. If you can't manage the stairs there isn't a lot to see. One room on the ground floor of the castle that has a visual display showing you the rest of the castle and one exhibition room on the top floor of Blackgate. You get a free career in then it is ÂŁ7.50 for two but if you don't need a career ticket then the price isn't worth it for two rooms. Luckily we were able to slowly manage the stairs and the view at the top was worth it. The exhibition room in Blackgate didn't have a lot in it you couldn't read the informative properly as the music was too loud and you lost your concentration. We spent one and half hours here.

Whilst staying in the city my wife and I decided to visit this castle. Although it very handy for the city centre/railway station and looks fairly impressive from the outside the inside is rather stark with very little in the way of exhibits or information points. At ÂŁ12-50 each (admittedly entrance is valid for a year) we felt that it was somewhat overpriced for what there is.

From the outside the castle looks fairly small, but there's lots to see in this well maintained attraction. There are lots of steps to negotiate, but it's worth for the view from the battlements.
The one thing that let the castle down is that there's no arrows telling you which way to go. It leaves you constantly unsure whether to go up or down first, or whether a door leads to a dead end or deeper into the castle. I saw one group of guests who'd followed a spiral stair case all the way to the top only to find the gate at roof level was locked. Why on earth isn't there a sign telling visitors this at the bottom of the stairs?

Sounds daft doesn't it but I never realised Newcastle had a castle. I mean the word is right there in the name. But talk about Newcastle and you probably talk about the bridges over the Tyne and St James Park.
The castle is right in the middle of the city at one of its highest points and the place grew up around it. The Keep is wonderfully preserved and is replete with history which is wonderfully explained by the informative displays. However, I opted for the audio guide- which is accessed via your device - and found it really enhanced my visit. The Barbican gatehouse (the Black Gate) can also be visited and this houses an exhibition gallery and gift shop
When you're visiting you must climb the stairs to the ramparts which commands awesome views around Newcastle.

Hello. Guide-dogs only, we're afraid.
Written 31 May 2016
Hello Rita. The Castle consists of two buildings: the Castle Keep and Black Gate. The Black Gate is fully accessible, with a lift and accessible toilets. The Castle Keep has a lot of narrow stairs and only the lower ground floor is fully accessible to wheelchair users. If you explain the limitations of your visit upon arrival, you will be able to get tickets at a concessionary rate.

Is there a cafe/bar within the Castle grounds?
Written 28 March 2016
There isn't, no. However St Nicholas Cathedral next door has a café which is open 8:30am – 3:30pm Monday – Friday. The Newcastle Quayside is less than five minutes' walk away and has lots of bars and cafés

Anyone have any advice on the best place to park?
Written 27 May 2015
Hi Claire. On-street parking around the Castle site is sparse, however there are numerous multi-storey car parks nearby in the city centre, including the Quayside's multi-storey car park, which is approximately 12 minutes’ walk away and can hold up to 500 vehicles
