Great art and museum exhibits. Plenty to see for free, but worthy of a generous donation. Fascinating insights into the history and art of this great city, painted a very rich picture for us as tourists. Nice cafe space with reasonable simple menu.

A good welcome with interesting contents, though the layout is confusing in places and I feel I missed bits out! plenty of interaction opportunities for kids and adults.

Worth checking the special exhibitions. In the main collection, the Tyneside scenes through the ages are rather interesting.

Always worth popping in if you're in town and have a spare hour. Some interesting paintings especially Pre Raphaelites and North East artists like John Martin. Spread over a few floors and if I hadn't gone into the café I would have missed quite a lot of the best exhibits. A beautiful statue of the Fallen Angel is wasted in... More

We followed the tourist signs to this gallery and were pleasantly surprised. It had a varied selection of work, covering most tastes. Small but nice building, particularly for the Art Deco stained glass windows and door handles. We found the staff very helpful and friendly. There is a nice restaurant and loos are nice and clean! Best pieces of art... More

Not a great collection of art, and of what there is it is not presented in the best way. The people working here were not that friendly.

I am really sorry to hear that your visit to the gallery did not live up to your expectations. The Laing's art collection focuses on British oil paintings, watercolours, ceramics, silver and glassware and has Designated status in recognition of its national and international significance. Small but well worth visiting. The exhibits are of good quality and surprisingly varied for such a small gallery. So much of Newcastle was a disappointment but the Laing went a long way to compensate.

M and I visited on a fairly busy Saturday morning. The building itself is attractive and we enjoyed wandering around the local art and pre-Raphaelite galleries. We were probably there about an hour and a half, but we didn't visit the Quentin Blake exhibition so if you included that you would probably need longer.

We enjoyed our visit to the Laing. It was very close to the city centre so withiin walking distance. Not too big, enough for a 2 hour visit.Interesting exhibits, particularly enjoyed the Pre-Raphaelite room. Good coffee bar and very pleasant helpful staff.

I did a tour of Quentin Blake's "Inside Stories" exhibition and it was excellent. The guide really explained the stories behind each series of illustrations well. The books in which the illustrations featured were also available at the exhibition, and it felt really great to be able to read about the illustrations and then read the books.
