- ianb111Melbourne, Australia855 contributionsAlways goodSadly, the day I chose to visit the market at Wells was also the day that the weather took a turn for the worse. Because of this, not as many stallholders bothered to set up their stalls. This was a shame, as it is always a pleasure to wander around the market stalls. There is always a butchers selling the best sausages in a bap. They may not be cheap, but the quality is perfect. I always make a point of heading straight to them and then eating my sausage whilst wandering around the market.Visited September 2023Travelled soloWritten 25 November 2023
- Becky HChampaign, Illinois27 contributionsUnique and relaxingWe went to the Wells market yesterday. They have a large variety of items. Very nice selection from handmade wooden items to baskets and clothes. We bought some really nice clothes at the booth near the cathedral and some cute duck items and wood items from the booth just about the end of the market. We ate at the Crown in Wells. William Penn preached there in 1605. The food was really good and we met some very nice people. Had a nice coffee in Wells and shopped in some nice shops on our trip as well. There are loads of shops there. Bought some absolutely beautiful flowers to put on my husband’s grandparents and mom’s grave. I would recommend checking this place out if you’re wanting something different to do and want to get a sense of the area and the culture.Visited June 2024Travelled with familyWritten 16 June 2024
- Geoff HSissinghurst, United Kingdom17,879 contributionsThere is quite a bit of historyAt one end of Wells Market place is Wells Market Cross and Fountain and at the other end is the Bishop's Palace and Gardens and twice a week the area buzzes with the sound of a market selling local farmers' produce and other items. I love walking round a market but, unfortunately, the day we were there there wasn't a market. Still it's nice to wander round as there is quite a bit of history associated with the area. In 1685, in the Market Hall, 94 people were sentenced to death by Judge Jeffreys for taking part in the Monmouth Rebellion. Also, in the same year, from a window of one of the buildings fronting Market Place, a timber-framed inn called The Crown, a William Penn addressed a crowd of about 3,00 people. In 1684 William Penn had been given some land in North America by King Charles II. That land was to become the colony of Pennsylvania, a refuge for religious refugees.Visited July 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 28 July 2024

Lovely up to date central market.
We visited on a Wednesday and although quiet to begin with it got very busy later on.
There is a mix of traditional stalls selling everything from produce to fish and clothing and more food fest style stalls so to be honest I think something for everyone.
The pies on sale looked yummy although we had no way to refrigerate them quickly so avoided temptation. We couldn't resist the lovely cakes from Somerset Blissful Bakes though!
With a plethora of small coffee, cake and food cafes around there is plenty of opportunity to stop, rest and just absorb the atmosphere.

Wells has a really vibrant market and good local shops around the market place. Its well worth a visit if you are in the area. The antiquity of the buildings and it being the setting for 'Hot Fuzz' add to the interest.
A great many of the visitors however do not appear to have heard of the pandemic or they think they have reached such seniority it doesn't matter; so do have a mask with you and try to socially distance.

On market days (Weds and Sat) this area hosts a diverse range of market stalls. They are not cheap but are providing a wide range of goods, including local meat and fish.

Lovely area near the Cathedral with lots of cafes around it offering outdoor seating.
great vibe especially on a sunny day.
Don't miss the 'monument' / tribute (can't think of a suitable word) to local Mary Rand who broke the world long jump record in 1964 and was the first British female to win an Olympic gold medal in track and field. She remains the only Great Britain female athlete to win three medals in a single Games. It is set in the floor towards the corner where you pass through into the Cathedral grounds.

Plenty of interesting things to see in easy walk of the market place. There's a market there on Saturday and Wednesday with stalls selling food, clothes, plants and other sundries. The actual shops in the area are mainly food, charity shops and touristy with a couple of clothing shops. There's parking for a few pounds in the car parks or at nearby Waitrose. There's parking on the streets for limited periods so if you're only popping in for an hour then you should hunt around for a space rather than paying unnecessarily. The city is small but it's compact and easy to access all areas on foot. There's a walk to the woods and on the outskirts of the Bishops Palace. A nice place to spend a few hours ambling about.

Surprised to see that the public litter bins are still the old fashioned type and don't cater for recycling.
The only greenery consists of flowering plants in planters. Could do with more trees and shrubs.
The most disappointing thing is that traffic is still allowed through the tiny city centre. This will certainly put most tourists off from visiting.
For such a small place, the city council should certainly pedestrianise the city centre.

This is a lovely place to spend the day, especially on market day. There are lots of independent shops including coffee shops and the Crown hotel offers lovely lunches that are reasonably priced. Pay a visit to the Cathedral and the Bishop’s Palace where the swans ring a bell to get fed!

This is a lovely little 'city' - it's very much like our market towns in Shropshire. We visited the market on Wednesday (it's also on a Saturday) Local produce on sale, clothing & leather goods and some quirky stalls too. There are lots of smaller, independent shops in the town. Plenty of places to eat & drink.
Well worth a visit.

How many market days does Wells have. Are there special market days. Do you have a list, can I get one.
Written 6 August 2022
Sorry, don't know. I imagine the town web site would have this info.

Hi. I’m thinking of bringing my elderly Mum to the market tomorrow. Which are the nearest long stay car parks to try 1st?
Written 11 August 2020
Not sure sorry. If you check the council website though they should have a list of them.

Hello,
Please, is the Wells market dog friendly?
Written 25 July 2018
Definitively dog friendly. The market is a meeting place for people and dogs! There are dogs of all kinds, shapes and behaviours!
On a lead of course. The dogs, not the people although sometimes, it is the people who should be on a lead and the dogs should be free, ha ha ha.

hello, which day is the market in wells?
Written 25 July 2018
What time does the market open and close?
Written 31 January 2018
I have bought a great bunch of different flowers for only £5 from the flower stall at close of business. I think 2 pm is a good time for bargains already. The seller puts the flowers together in different combinations and you chose the bunche(s) which takes your fancy.

Hi Guys, Is the market daily? I am in the area in a couple of months from Friday-Sunday. Thanks, Steve
Written 20 September 2017
Saturdays and Wednesdays only. Can confirm this as we've just spent two weeks there. There can be a slight difference in the stalls between the two days. Still and excellent market.
