Home to the Bishops of Bath and Wells for 800 years this stunning medieval...

Home to the Bishops of Bath and Wells for 800 years this stunning medieval palace is open for all to enjoy. Surrounded by a breathtaking moat you can cross a flagstone drawbridge, under the portcullis and experience a true hidden gem in the heart of the City of Wells. The Bishop’s Palace dates from the early-thirteenth century when Bishop Jocelin Trotman, the first Bishop to hold the title Bishop of Bath and Wells, received a crown licence to build a residence and deer park on land to the south of the Cathedral of St Andrew. Today visitors can enjoy the medieval palace building, including a vaulted Undercroft and the Long Gallery in which all the portraits of past bishops hang. There are also 14 acres of gardens to explore, including the beautiful well pools from which the city takes its name, family events and guided walks. The Bishop's private Chapel is open to all and sits next to the ruined Great Hall which formerly housed great banquets and celebrations. The world famous mute swans who live alongside the moat and ring a bell when they want food attract a lot of attention; a tradition started by the daughter of Bishop Hervey in the 1870's. Many of the buildings are scheduled ancient monuments and sit alongside recent major developments that include a new café, shop, learning centre, accessible pathways and interpretation. These improvements also include a thriving new Community Garden and a contemporary Garden of Reflection.

Great venue for a Wedding

We were here for a wedding in January 2017. Great location with good service. The gardens and wells are very nice to visit and the buildings have a great authentic feel.

This play is never ceases to amaze me. No matter how many times you come it looks different even in so called 'off season' as January is. My other half treated me to a joint membership for two people which cost £48 for the year. Three visits will cover the cost. For some reason the lake had been allowed to... More

Thanks for your lovely review Brian. We let the Moat and Well Pool levels deplete a couple of times a year, as advised by the Environment Agency, to help keep the silt levels down! It does look a little odd and some people enjoy being able to see the water bubbling up from the bottom of the well pools at... More

We paid a small fee to get in the Bishops Palace and gardens, but this was well worthwhile, as you could visit and enter the Palace and included two floors. The Bishop still lives in the building, which is historic and well kept and interesting. The gardens are very pleasant and attractive, and include many springs which give Wells its... More

We recently visited the Bishops Palace in Wells, it is a lovely building set in beautiful gardens, well worth a visit would like to visit again in the summer or spring to see the gardens as January is not a good month to see the gardens.

Absolutely beautiful grounds. I went with my girlfriend with approximately an hour left of sunlight - it was magnificent. I would recommend going around that time!

Situated just by the market and next to the Cathedral is the Bishop's Palace. Well worth a visit to see the wells from where the city got its name. Do take the guided tour. Would have loved to be there in the spring when the flowers and trees are out in full bloom.

Look out for the green dragons on the stairs and the colourful wallpaper! There are some interesting things inside. We loved the chapel which is almost square and has lots of light entering through its large windows. There is plenty of outside space for warmer days and it was good to see the wells which the city is named for... More

We love to visit and the children love to explore the gardens and look out onto the moat. There is now a lovely little play area too. The Bishops Palace is amazing and lovely to walk around, although it won't take you longer than 20 mins! We usually spend an hour here, sometimes two if we take a picnic.

Beautiful stone work and the walks and moat were very nice, particularly in the early morning. Recommend a visit if your nearby.

Stunningly beautiful buildings surrounded by tranquil and well tended gardens and a full circle moat with resident swans and ducks. Beautiful trees and ruins of much earlier buildings.
