Starling murmurations

Large car park, with toilets and information centre. Hot drinks available when information centre open. Paths well laid, plenty of hides. Plenty of walks and birds.

We have been meaning to go here for years, we took the plunge yesterday. This was an excellent place to visit. Friendly staff, clear signage, big car park and millions of the most amazing starlings, that made the most amazing sight! Go if you can, it is fantastic.

This was a sight on my mum's wish list, so as a Christmas present I booked a cottage for a couple of days and we came in hope. The Friday evening was cloudy and damp and although the starlings came they pretty much landed as soon as the arrived. We came back the following evening about a hour before sunset,... More

We'd been to watch the starlings here before, but we wanted to come again, and, as before, were not disappointed. We are RSPB members, to parking was free for us, though non-members have to pay. We went to the clean toilets on the site, before going into the hut where very welcoming and helpful staff told us what birds could... More

We visited Somerset as my girlfriend wanted to see the starlings. We arrived early afternoon then spent the afternoon walking around the reserve. We saw the usual ducks but also saw little egrets, herons, grebes and great white egrets (a first for me). We then went back to the car park for a cup of tea and a snack before heading out... More

A return visit on a lovely winter's day; we had a bracing walk near sunset before the starlings flew in to roost for the night in the reedbeds. It's great that at the RSPB car park there are now loos and a small visitors' cabin where the very friendly and informative volunteers will make you a cup of tea before... More

Visited in the evening, about an hour before dusk. A lovely nature reserve, toilet block, and well kept paths and boardwalks. Saw cormorants, egret, swans etc. Then the big event, as dusk fell, thousands of starlings flocking and dancing above us, and the noise as they settled in the reeds. Amazing sight and sound. NOTE, the RSPB will charge for... More

I visited this reserve for the first time, it is not easy to find as the signage from the village of Meare is none existent. The staff in the visitor centre were very friendly and informative. It was good to have toilets on the car park and good information as to the type of birds and animals that could be... More

With 2 elderly parents with us we arrived at the new car park on Tuesday afternoon expecting it to be empty. Surprised how busy the car park was and how many people there were carrying these huge cameras and lenses fixed to tripods over their shoulders. Never once saw them in action on the designated walkways so guess these people... More

Possibly the best birding site in the Southwest, and a lovely place to visit even if you're not a birder.
