A lovely fortified Manor

This place is lovely cared for by volunteers through English Heritage and really worth a visit . Tea in the garden is good too.

Back in time, enter the Great Hall where your Lord awaits to greet you, imagine the walls festooned with tapestries, the minor lords and ladies of the court feasting any merry making, the visiting knights greeting comrades in arms, recounting tales of journeys taken, of jousting and accolades received. Visit the Keep where your Lord has his living quarters, and... More

It's hard to know where to look here - especially when it's a sunny day. There's the most stunning scenery all around. Granted, bits of it a bit on the ruined side, but the fireplace, grounds and church all add to the "wow" factor. I particularly enjoyed looking out of the castle window across the water and seeing the very... More

My wife & I are both EH members and the manual describes this as ''the finest and best preserved fortified medieval manor house in England'' - a statement that is true to its word and definitely worth a visit. The gatehouse had a very welcoming appearance supported by the staff. A pleasant grassed square was nice in the spring sunshine.... More

This place is so gorgeous, just like stepping back into history. Having seen many photos of this place I was not disappointed with the real thing. Absolutely amazing and so well preserved. The handheld devices that tell the history are well worth listening to and come free with the ticket. A really nice gift shop is on site and the... More

We spent a very interesting couple of hours armed with audio guides that were included in the price wandering around this castle. It has survived the centuries well and has lots of nooks and crannies to explore up and downstairs. There is a cafe inside the gate house which looked very nice. Well worth the visit

This is a very interesting castle - half timbered with the remains of a moat and a gatehouse. It is unusual for a castle of this kind to be in such a good state of repair and open to the public.

This is a great little castle to look around and we really enjoyed our 2 hour visit. The only disppointment was that Engligh Heritage have now started to charge a £1 non-refundable park fee.

Lovely place to visit, we had a walk around the moat even though it was drizzling. The buildings are very interesting. It would have been nice to have been able to go inside the gate house upstairs not just the cafe. The little church next door is also very interesting, not many windows. It's a very pretty place and we... More
