Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

We enjoyed our visit during a walking tour to this quiet, beautiful old college, which was founded in 1624. We particularly liked the gardens & Old Quad.

Pembroke is a typical Oxford college, quiet, beautiful, full of history, with well maintained gardens. It is definitely worth visiting. Accommodations however are something different. I spent 4 nights for a conference in Oxford. The room was small and simply equipped, but that was expected. The problems were with toilet not flushing and heating not working. I had to insist more than once to have them fixed in a timely manner (i.e. before leaving). My request of a second blanket was dismissed as absurd. Considering the price paid, it was not a good value.

Tucked away opposite the "House" - when I was at the varsity, it existed in penury but proudly. Famous for being Jack the Ripper's old college (Monatague Druitt) it also educated Keith Chegwin and Dr. Cornelius Credwell - the notorious Coventry frotter. Not to be missed are the famous caves, with their unrivalled Roman frescoes.

Founded in 1624 this college makes up one of 38 colleges of the university of Oxford. Very charming college with a fantastic old quad and a chapel quad, this college should be on your list to visit.

This colleges two lovely quads, the Old Quad and the Chapel Quad. Both are peaceful with lovely lawns. Notable alumni are Samuel Johnson, J William Fulbright, and the current King of Jordan. Also the athlete who was the first to run a mile in under 4 minutes matriculated here. JRR TOLKEIN WAS A FELLOW AND PROFESSOR HERE.

Everything about Pembroke is charming. Walking through the inconspicuous entry to the first quadrangle with the amazingly lush grass, through to the second quadrangle with equally plush grass, the dining hall full of medieval character and the Damon Wells Chapel, which is breath-taking.

Pembroke College was founded in 1624 and the old quad and chapel quad remain as a truly wonderful aspect of the college, exuding history and heritage. It was really good to visit this place with my husband who studied here as a post-graduate student years ago. The old quad with its honey coloured limestone buildings and window boxes with red geraniums is beautifully maintained, as are the newer aspects of the college complex. As a whole the ambiance is one of peace and tranquility and one can enjoy experiencing this, knowing of the mighty intellectual thought and work that has been accomplished here over the centuries. Famous alumni include Sir Roger Bannister, Samuel Johnson, and J.R.R.Tolkein.

Its relatively small size especially when compared with its immediate neighbour on the other side of St. Aldate's has led it to be known as the coal-scuttle of Christ Church. It was founded in 1624 by King James I of England and VI of Scotland but takes its name from William Herbert, the 3rd Earl of Pembroke who was then both Lord Chamberlain and Lord Chancellor of Oxford University. The Old Quad started in the 1600s is built of Cotswold limestone and partially straddles the old city wall. The chapel dating from 1732 when joined by the Hall in 1848 completed Chapel Quad recognised as one of the most attractive of any college in the university. Following the acquisition of a number of private houses and the closure of Beef Lane in 1962 the new North Quad opened. In 2013 two further quads opened, one housing a 170-seat multi-purpose theatre, an art gallery and teaching rooms. Alumni include King Abdullah of Jordan, Sir Roger Bannister, Lord Heseltine, Hungary's current PM Viktor Orban and that master of mythical escapist drivel JRR Tolkien.

As a graduate of the college and university, I could be accused of bias but I did graduate 56 years ago! The college has made remarkable progress since my day. The Old and Chapel quads are much the same but 2 new quads have been added: the first by closing Beef Lane to the north of the chapel quad and incorporating into the quad the houses (which the college already owned) along the lane and which back onto the quad; the second by developing a former light industrial site to the south west of the college, and constructing a bridge across Brewer Street, the college has added a conference room, a cafeteria and many student rooms, to the extent that every undergraduate is now able to have a room in college for all of his/her three years at Oxford, unheard of my day when we had just one. The quads are beautiful, especially when the window boxes have their flowers in bloom. Admittedly, some of the rooms in the older part of the college leave a lot to be desired, but the general ambience is wonderful. I always look forward to my visits.,

Pembroke is one of Oxford's hidden gems. The idea of student accommodation doesn't appeal (even if it is Oxford) but the college itself is really pretty and quiet with lovely old buildings and quads and a gorgeous old chapel chapel and hall. Definitely worth a look.
