- 141jengEvesham, United Kingdom690 contributionsA lovely place to visitVisited here on a day trip to Oxford. It was a lovely sunny day and perfect to explore the college and grounds. Enjoyed a cuppa and cake in the cafe by the river, too. It was a lovely place to visit.Visited June 2023Travelled with friendsWritten 1 October 2023

The building and chapel are divine. would highly recommend visiting. there is an entrance fee for visitors so do pay attention to the time as you cannot visit the dining hall during the lunch hours and that was not shared at the entranceVisited October 2023Travelled soloWritten 16 October 2023
- KityaymaSydney, Australia559 contributionsDeer park and beautiful autumn colourI visited a few of the colleges while I was in Oxford and this was my favourite. How lucky are the students who get to spend their days wondering around these beautiful buildings, cloisters and gardens. Imagining having a deer park in your backyard! There was still a lot of autumn colour when I visited and I took my time wondering the extensive grounds, the meadow and Fellows Garden. The deer were a delight to watch as were the many squirrels and birds in the gardens. Staff on the gate were friendly and helpful and the entry fee, around ÂŁ10 was well worth it.Visited November 2023Travelled soloWritten 17 March 2024
- Laura M20 contributionsBeautiful, tranquil placeThis is a beautiful place to visit- combining stunning architecture with immaculately manicured lawns and a lovely unspoilt riverside walk past a Deerpark. I was fortunate to visit at a quiet time of the day and the weather was warm and sunny. The porters were so friendly too- providing me with a map and explaining where I should go to access the grounds.Visited May 2024Travelled soloWritten 10 May 2024
- permia64,704 contributionsEvery aspect is fabulousSpending over an hour in the vast campus was fabulous. So much to see and admire. Fabulous architecture is everywhere, spanning the centuries from its 1458 founding. There are famous Towers, notably Magdalen and Founders’. A great chapel is reverential with an awe inspiring choir and much statuary and stained glass. It was great to see the Hall, set for dining. Traditional, there are numerous portraits of past notables plus more modern ones. A deer park is expansive, verdant and sylvan. Numerous of the endearing animals were dining or post lunch relaxing.Visited May 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 19 August 2024

Founded in the 15th century, Magdalen College is one of Oxford’s most prominent colleges. We were lucky to be invited to visit by a friend whose daughter is enrolled to study here. We toured the historical buildings, we visited her dorm room with a beautiful view of a rose garden and we walked through the beautiful grounds ending at the Deer Park. The highlight of the day was attending a candlelight Evensong service at the chapel followed by champagne refreshments in the Antechapel and later a formal dinner at the medieval Hall. Although our admission was free, usually the charges are £8 for adults with a discount for students and the elderly.

So much history and so much beautiful architecture, with a peaceful walk around the deer meadows as an added bonus!
The chapel was closed, unfortunately, but it was still very interesting to see the St. Swithin's tower and the outdoor pulpit, then the small Chaplain's Quad with the great tower, on which building was started in 1492.
The nearby Cloister area is much larger and very beautiful. Then from here there was a small, rather obscure, archway which led into the lawns in front of the 'New Building' (from the 1700s), which is completely different in architectural style than everything else in the College. This led in turn to the 2 km Addison's Walk around the water meadow, with deer grazing in the paddock. If you want to go even further, you can explore the Fellow's Garden at the far end of Addison's Walk. It's hard to believe that such a peaceful area can be right in the middle of Oxford.
Overall very enjoyable.

We were advised that if we wanted to see a proper traditional refectory eating hall then this was the place to pop into, having the added bonus of wonderful architecture, wild deer and Quod. I can not recall exactly how much it was to enter, you can buy a combined ticket to the Botanical Gardens which are opposite, but it was worth it for the history and access to the grounds. It was very peaceful wandering about and the gardens are very well kept.

Enjoyed Evensong service. Arrive about 10 minutes early and the porter will let you through. Services are open to the public and schedule is on the college web site. Different choirs perform different times and sometimes they have visiting choirs. Expect to stand for much of the service. Very special experience.

Good example of the typical Oxford collage architecture. Interesting history. Pleasant way to spend an hour or more.
Reduced price because of C19 restrictions made this a good value.

Be sure to see New Building where C.S. Lewis, author of the Narnia chronicles, once lived. Also, follow his favorite walk called Addison's Walk that is east of the building. In the springtime, there is plenty of wisteria in the quad, and there is a deer herd in Magdalen Grove. There's canopy thinning due to geoengineering.
Stop by the canteen for some ice cream. Expand over to the Eagle and Child pub where the Inklings writers group met, if you have time. Oxford dons C.S. Lewis & J.R.R. Tolkien, Lewis' brother Warnie, and others participated.

Hi, what is the entrance fee to visit Magdalen College and the Magdalen Library? I know that there are no visitors allowed because of COVID-19 right now, but I want to know for in the future.
Many thanks!

The description is wrong. The College was founded in 1458, not 1448.
