Looking for somewhere different to go we came across the reviews for here and thought we'd give it a try. The volunteers obviously loved the place and enjoyed showing it off to us. I would definitely recommend going on a Saturday between 10-12 whilst the volunteers explain all about the winding house and take you inside and up to the... More

Sadly it was closed when i went by with the dog. Just wish it was open more during the day but understand that it is all ran by volunteers. Talking of the volunteers, it was nice to see the gates of the winding house decorated by knitting done by the members of the local W.I.(Women's Institute). Seeing this makes you... More

We went on a pump day. There was lots to do. The volunteers were really enthusiastic and helpful and we learnt lots of facts and had a go at a few things too. Food a bit basic though. Next time we would take a picnic. however, we didnt go for the food.

This is a very well maintained site of a historic winding house of a former pit. It is run by volunteers, all of whom worked in the pits in Nottingham, and are enthusiastic about the site. Bestwood village, too, has pit houses and other memorabilia, all of which were built as part of the pit.

The Winding Engine House is great to visit and it is for any age. The kids loved it. Enjoy coffee and cake next door before a lovely walk in the country park.

Volunteers know their stuff and keen to engage with visitors sharing their memories and history. I took a French student and he found it interesting. Good to see lottery funding working for us locally. This is the 2nd time I've been and on both occasions there was a visitor who had worked in the mines also keen to share their... More

Westwood Village, an old mining village and is part of a conservation order for some of the houses etc. It is amazing that this village has a lot of history and is embraced by a country park on its doorstep. The history goes back all the way to Charles 1 and Nell Gwyn. The winding engine house is the only... More

We take bus tours to Bestwood Winding House each summer and everyone enjoys the enthusiasm of the volunteers and their knowledge of the workings of the winding house and pit.
