The volunteer hosts provide a warm and well informed welcome to visitors and make the visit fascinating. The coffee shop is excellent and the new visitor centre is brilliant for even the youngest children. It brings Northumberland's heritage alive in such a fun way.

Only a few minutes to spare. The abbey is amazingly beautiful. Will spend more time on next visit to Hexham.

We were greeted by a friendly, knowledgeable volunteer so we were able to look out for interesting items as we wandered around the very impressive interior. My son is 8 and found the visit very enjoyable as there were interactive things to do and period clothes to dress up in. As it is free a generous donation is well worthwhile.... More

A beautiful building with a fascinating history which is explained in the visitor centre. The Abbey also has a team of friendly volunteer stewards who will help you get the most from your visit and answer your questions. The crypt is a must see. If the history is of no interest to you, then the peace and quiet may be.... More

Our plan was just to take a quiet stroll around Hexham on a Tuesday morning, and as a part of this we walked past the Abbey. Noticing that it was free entry, we thought it was worth a peek, and that we'd probably have a walk around for twenty minutes. Two hours later and we were still in there, steeped... More

Stopped here on the way back from visiting the museum at South Shields. There was parking nearby. The weather was warm and we stopped in the gift shop for a lighter shirt. The abbey is beautiful inside. Of particular note is the tombstone of a young cavalary standard bearer who died when he was 25. The inscription was touching. We... More

We visited Hexham Abbey last weekend and were amazed at how old this site was - dating back 1,400 years! There are really informative displays explaining the history of the Abbey in imaginative and interactive ways. We even visited the crypt which dates back to the 7th century and which was constructed using old Roman burial stones - it's quite... More

Shown around by a tour guide, a lovely old Abbey, well worth a visit with a gift shop and refreshments on sale.
