    Don’t miss this
Great place to visit. Buy a Saver Ticket for the museum and Vindolanda and you will not be disappointed. It is an amazing place to visit for all ages. The two are a short drive away from each over but well worth it. The 3D interactive short film is well presented and informative. Don’t miss this museum if you are in this are. Staff are friendly and there’s a very small comfortable cafe on site offering a selection of drinks and snacks.

    Informative and interesting
This place was a good start to our learning about the romans! The interactive screen show was good and the museum was great to look around. The lady in reception was the nicest person and was so very helpful when sorting out our tickets. A real credit to a very lovely museum.

What have the Romans ever done for us?
Lots to see and good explanations about what you were looking at. They show an interesting film with a relatable story about what life was like for the Roman soldiers. However, I'm not so sure about being referred to as a 'Barbarian' just because I come from north of the wall, ouch. The cafe food was nice but them Romans need to conquer somewhere with better coffee.

    Fantastic Museum
Truly amazing Museum and so unexpected in its size, quality and layout. It was well worth more than one hour and so much more to take in. This is more about the museum as more imagination is needed for the unexcavated fort area but a fantastic start to discover the Hadrian Wall area. Great value on the joint ticket with Vindalanda. cafe great as well.

    Excellent Starting Point.
This site is owned by the same Trust as Vindolanda and a multi site ticket is available. It is well worth doing both sites. The Roman Army Museum explains life on the frontier of the Roman Empire. It explains Roman life at the time and also the importance of the frontier. It is a very visual experience and allows you to orientate yourself and prepare yourself for visiting the many archeological sites along Hadrians Wall.

Must do if in the area
Very interesting, well worth visiting took some effort to find as signage off the main road not good. Coffee shop reasonable price but not a lot of choices. We only visited everything indoors because the weather wasn’t good.

Fantastic museum, amazing audio visual presentations, loved it!
Just back from a day at the wall and started off here as many years since I visited. So interesting, the three films I watched including Edge of Empire were brilliant, the actors, costumes and photography totally immersed me. The reconstructions of the roman catapults were works of art, tho apparently I wasn't strong enough to make a decent archer. Nice cafe too and very helpful and pleasant gent on admissions. Really is something for everyone, three hours just flew by. Get a saver ticket doubled up with Vindolanda for a full day's experience.

    Great little museum
A really great little museum for anyone who has an interest in the Roman army and Emperor Hadrian. The staff are top form and really seem as if they care. Whilst the museum is small, there is plenty packed in there, with the video being amazing and worth the visit alone.

    Very welcoming, educational family fun.
Lovely museum. Visited with 2 adults, a 5yr old and 1 year old. Staff were fantastic, very welcoming, very interactive and fab with the kids. 5 year old got stuck into the quest sheet provided at the start, having to tick objects he found off the list and also enjoyed writing his name in roman letters. Also enjoyed the cinema room. Cafe was modern with lovely sandwiches. We bought a ticket which also included access to the VINDOLANDA roman museum down the road. So enjoyed 2 experiences in one day at a discounted price. Thanks again for a lovely welcoming trip.

    Excellent, highly recommended
Arrived close to opening time via the AD122 bus from Hexham. The staff are all lovely, chatty and helpful. This was the highlight of my four days along Hadrians Wall. The displays are inspired and the videos very professional. Combined site this with Vindolanda. The cafe was very pleasant the the refreshments well presented. Highly recommended

You can obtain a combined entrance ticket for the Roman Army Museum and the Vindolanda archaeological site (about 8-miles away) - both sites are owned and run by the Vindolanda Trust. My advice would be to visit the two sites on different days, as there is so much to see and take in. The museum is well presented and very informative both for people new to Roman Britain and the area of Hadrian's Wall and those who have been before and know the story of the Romans in northern Britain. A mixture of finds from the Vindolanda site and some replicas as well as films about roman life on Hadrian's Wall - all very well done

A small cafe is also on site serving hot and cold drinks, sandwiches and cakes/scones.

One of my favourite museums in the area, absolutely exducates you fantastically on the Roman army presence in the area. The exhibits are written in plain English and it shows you the history of the wall. The 3d film "Edge of Empire" is not to be missed and always gives a great sense of the wall.

In the covid world there is hand sanitiser everywhere, staff are well protected as are guests.

Tip: It has the most picturesque view from a gift shop window you'll ever see. Trust me.

We added this into our trip to Vindolanda and I'm really glad we did. I wasn't sure what to expect but I was blown away by the information and the way in which it is presented. I can't comment on the 3D experience as sadly I am unable to view anything in 3D but we really enjoyed the rest of the museum. I particularly enjoyed the video diary of a platoon of volunteers. Whatever you do you must check out the Toilets, they are simply stunning and I salute whomever approved the design :D

Having perused the site of Vindolanda the path takes you down to the stream and the very comprehensive museum, stuffed with Roman artefacts including the world's largest collection of leather Roman shoes, all shapes and sizes. Lots of audio visual exhibits and plenty of seating, and it was WARM! Abutting the museum are cloakroom facilities, a nice restaurant and a shop . The exit is here and you can take the path back up to the carpark or sort a prearranged lift, there is a lane circuiting the site which is available for the less able.

Lovely visit enjoyed by three generations of our family.
The lady serving in the cafe made me a second coffee because she thought she hadn’t made a good enough job of the first one.
Our Grandchildren had been studying the Romans at primary school and the museum helped bring to life what they’d learned.
A super, highly recommended visit for all ages.

The Roman Army Museum works wonderfully in tandem with Vindolanda, as it fleshes out the outlines given by the archeological site and paints fuller pictures of historical fact, brimming with life and how it was lived. And in doing so added layers and narratives to what we'd garnered from our trip to Vindolanda itself.

A wonderful museum that adds to our understanding of Roman times and is an excellent adjunct to Vindolanda. If you go to one you must go the other.

I enjoyed a visit to the Roman Army Museum. There are a few artefacts but not many. There was more information about the Roman Army and a short video to watch.

There is a small shop and cafe with limited options open (due to COVID19, there are some restrictions and needed cash to pay at the museum.)

We had originally planned to just visit Vindolanda but having discovered this museum existed a couple of days beforehand decided to do both! You can get a ticket for both sites that saves a bit of money and they are one of the few places where a 16 year old is still classed as a child!
We arrived just in time for one of the outdoor guided tours which despite the typical British weather kicking in just as it was about to start, was well worth doing! Our guide Alex (definitely not Helen!) was very entertaining and gave a great tour without overloading us with information.
Plenty to see in the museum including a 3D film and interactive displays. It's well worth a visit.

We combined our visit with Vindolanda and together they make a great day out. The Roman army museum is smaller and there is less to see but explains life in the army and on the frontier really well through exhibitions films and multimedia. When finished there is a country park just up the road that sits on the wall and after a short steep climb offers amazing views and wall related photo opportunities!
