Visit Roman Vindolanda today and you will find one of the North East’s most famous and not to be missed tourist attractions lying in the beautiful landscape of Hadrian's Wall Country. Formerly a key military post on the northern frontier of Britain, Vindolanda is the home of Britain's 'Top Treasure' - the Vindolanda Writing Tablets - and is one Europe's most important Roman archeological sites, with live excavations taking place every year. The recently fully refurbished on site museum provides a breathtaking exploration of the Trust's ongoing discoveries and accounts of Roman life. There are no other places on earth where it is possible to experience Roman Britain, Hadrian's Wall and history coming to life before your very eyes all in one space! Come and explore it for yourself and find out why Vindolanda is treasured worldwide.

We luckily went on a sunny day to stroll around the ruins. There is a small fort for kids to play on I guess. The museum is very small but well laid out. Nice wee shop. Nice gardens. I would say it was okay, but nothing there for kids....at all! Unless they are mad into Romans then it's a no... More

Such a great way to connect with so much history! Being outside it was super cold but the coffee was hot at the cafe!

We called on spec en route to Allendale after getting caught out by the need for a parking disk at Hexham to use the public car parks which we didn't have. Admission was around 7 or 8 quid - for 2 if us with a guidebook (£4.50) it cost is around £20 to get in. They are still excavating but... More

Vindolanda along with the Roman Army Museum not far away give great insight ino the workings and life of the Roman occupation and building of the wall. Vindolanda is a dry day tour and the Army museum a wet day outing if you need to plan. The Archeologists at Vindolanda are passionate, chatty and informative on what they are doing.... More

We visited on a very cold and damp day but it didn't spoil our enjoyment of this fascinating place. Very informative and interesting. By far the best part is witnessing archeology in process. We watched a shoe being unearthed and the archaeologist brought it to us to see close up. They are happy to chat and discuss their particular part... More

Interesting place to visit, with lots of ongoing archeology. For those with mobility issues, be warned, the museum is at the far end of the site, down a steep valley. There is a ramp down, but getting back up could be difficult. A visit is still worthwhile however to see the ruins of the fort and read up on the... More

A site I had imagined quite differently. I knew Vindolanda had ongoing excavations every summer (and will do for the next 200 years if all goes according to plan) but what I didn’t expect was such a massive site with such a clear visual presentation of the dynamic between the fort itself and the vicus that grew up outside the... I visited here in the '90's as a child and I can't believe there is so much more to uncover. Very informative place, good museum. Cafe will need to expand to cope on busier days! Well worth the joint ticket with the Roman Army Museum. Great day out. A bargain compared to other places in the area.

Visited the beautiful site on Easter Monday, having bought a joint ticket with the Roman Army Museum. Having visited on several occasions over the past 20 years, it is lovely to see the constant developments and additional finds. It is a very good mix of indoor and outdoor entertainment (necessary in the persistent drizzle), with the extremely large area of... More
