78 Derngate is the only house in England designed by Charles Rennie Mackintosh.

It is now a multi award-winning visitor attraction offering an unforgettable day out in Northampton.

Designed and remodelled by Charles Rennie Mackintosh in 1916, the house has been meticulously restored and opened to the public. On site: a boutique restaurant, light-filled art galleries, a stylish design shop and elegant spaces that can be hired for meetings, events and functions.

78 Derngate was the architect's final major commission; his visionary patron, Northampton model engineer, W.J Bassett-Lowke. It is the only place in the world where Mackintosh's mature architectural and interior style can be seen in their original setting. As such, the house has drawn many thousands of visitors from around the globe. Now you can follow in their footsteps and see this unique work from one of Britain's most influential and celebrated designers.

This is the only Charles Rennie Mackintosh designed house in England and is well worth a visit. Not every room is his, and much of the original work is reconstructed now, but with the help of informative booklets in each room, the history is told well. A small but charming cafe is attached. We enjoyed a very tasty sandwich, good... More

This is a small but interesting venue, not far from the centre of Northampton. We had a guided tour, and I think we would have been through the house in about 15-20 minutes if we hadn't been on a guided tour. The tour really helped us understand the history and context of the house, and was lead by a friendly... More

We found this attraction most interesting and the staff were very informative. This building certainly has more to offer than appears from the outside. Well worth a visit if you are in the area.

Learning a little more about Charles Rennie Mackintosh was great and the art deco designs take your breath away they are so unusual, would go again. Lovely café and the staff were helpful and well informed, so all in all a brilliant experience.

Spent an interesting morning at this fabulous Charles Rennie Mackintosh designed house in Northampton. The tour by the volunteer guide was so informative and really brought the history of the house to life - would thoroughly recommend it. Gorgeous gifts in the shop; very sorry we didn't think to book a table in the cafe as it looked lovely but... More

Very unusual house and monument to a unique designer. Very small and dark but great period detail. Worth a 2 hour visit.
