Dissapointed with our visit
Sep. 2021 • Couples
My husband and I spent five days in York and bought York Passes we had visited the York Minster in the Morning and wanted something for the afternoon. Having visited Cadburys years ago, we were looking forward to our experience at York.
We had walked past earlier and spotted the building so we realised it would not be fair to compare given its size but hoped to enjoy the experience.

There is a shop/cafe on the left with the entrance to the attraction on the right you show your tickets for scanning. Whilst waiting for others we decided to use the toilets I have to say I was shocked at the state of the ladies broken toilet seat thrown to one side, toilet paper everywhere and a filthy sink. No option but to use them on ny way out I noticed the sign about facilities being checked this must have been 2:30 a group of school children were sat on the seats but it wasn't them who had made the mess as we hadn't seen the children use them.

We went in lift in groups to the level above meeting our host Robbie he was brilliant and made the experience a little more enjoyable he was funny and did his best he gave out a cellphane bag with five samples of chocolate to try.

The next room shows moving images in a photo frame cleverly done that Robbie interacted with. Onwards to the next room and a volunteer was chosen to use the equipment fairly interesting but more for children. Wandered around display areas and were brought over to tables to make a chocolate lolly which you decorated in toppings put out , the final demonstration br a chocolatier a sample was given to each person and the lollies are distributed out and we are done.
Given its £15.00 per head it's not worth it.
I complained by email about the toilets and was pleased with my reply.

Possibly give it a miss try York Cocoa works instead.

Something different
Sep. 2021 • Couples
A pleasant and entertaining alternative.we opted for this tour during our (sadly) short stay in York looking for something different from another museum.
Tour was entertaining and well structured, staff were all amazing.
A special thank and praise to our tour guide, Theo, who entertained us along the way.

Super friendly staff members in the shop/ at check in. Really good tour with a very knowledgeable/ informative guide (sorry, we forgot your name - booked on the 11:30 tour on 21/09/21) Nice little sample back to go around the tour with, with the guide referencing different samples throughout the experience. Nice little chocolate demonstration at the end.

We were surprised we were able to decorate our own chocolate, which was a very nice touch. The chocolates we were given at the end of the tour were super tasty (milk & passion fruit I think)

Definitely worth a visit. Thankyou YCS!

(Only downside: The only bags available to buy for our purchases were upwards of £3... admittedly we should have brought a bag with us, but annoying a 10 or 20p bag wasn't available..)

Sweet Trip Back into the Past
This was a bit of fun. It was interesting although geared towards children. It brought back a few memories from our childhoods, some sweets we had forgotten about.

Good but a little fast at times
Sep. 2021 • Couples
We enjoyed the visit, and our tour guide (Louis) was very good, but it felt like he was a little hamstrung due to the speed of the pre-recorded parts of the presentation. This meant he had to talk very quickly and with a mask as well, it was hard for a non-native English speaker to understand.

Overall we would recommend the experience, but some future thought in slightly slowing the speed of presentation would be appreciated.

Mouth-watering and fascinating

Wow, I was dubious about this place as it wasn't an official Rowntrees/Terry's place as Cadbury World is for Cadbury. However I would thoroughly recommend visiting York Chocolate Story if you have time. Our guide (Katie) was very knowledgeable and her interaction with the founders in the tour was spot on. The freebies were an added bonus, as was the chance to create your own chocolate - although it was only a simple lolly of white chocolate. The exhibition on Kitkat was nicely done and the chocolate making demonstration was great. It took about an hour to complete. The only thing that could have made this experience better was if the gift shop sold vintage style chocolate (i.e. the original packaging), replica vintage decorated tins, and maybe postcards of the original shop front (which you see a reconstruction of on the tour but which you aren't allowed to take a photo of). Most of the chocolate on sale in the gift shop is not from the York brands. Having said that the in-shop made chocolates were delicious. I'd recommend the white chocolate and lemon ones, and wish I had bought more.

Chocolate delight!
Sep. 2021
Joe, our Chocolatier, gave us a thoroughly enjoyable & interesting insight into the history of chocolate making in York. Coming from a family with generations in the chocolate making business, his knowledge was second to none. We had the opportunity to see the origins of chocolate making & get lots of interesting facts about the various different brands & how they have evolved. We also had some samples of different types of chocolate to try. We were able to make our own chocolate lolly & observe how chocolate is put into moulds, with different fillings. We were able to taste the freshly made chocolate too!

Precooked this online prior to visit to York.

Josh and Joe were both excellent with their humor and information.

Tour very well presented.

Interactive as well getting to roll your own truffles even though it was a bit messy and getting to make your own lollipop.

Good selection in shop as well
