Overview
More
York Theatre Royal has been producing great drama in the beautiful city of York for over 250 years and is one of the country's leading producing theatres. Each year the theatre entertains over 200,000 people with its wide variety of performances, events and activities including the much loved annual pantomime starring Berwick Kaler, the UK's longest-running Dame. Over the last ten years York Theatre Royal's work has expanded to include collaborations with the wider community and school groups both on and off stage. The theatre has seen an increase in the number of young people wanting to get involved and as a result they now have one of the largest youth theatre groups in the country with over 300 members. In recent years, the theatre has had huge success in terms of number of attendees and various awards recognising their work for The Railway Children hosted at the National Railway Museum and then transferred to the old Eurostar terminal at Waterloo, and the large scale production of the York Mystery Plays 2012 involving over 1,000 members of the community. The theatre reopened Friday 22 April following a £6million redevelopment, with a new roof, an extended and re-modelled front of house area, a refurbished and redecorated main auditorium and with major improvements to access and environmental impact. York Theatre Royal is now a building fit for a 21st century audience that will be sustainable and able to thrive into the future.

Went to see Sue Perkins in March, mid-week. We had seats on the last row of the Upper Circle - the last two seats that had been available for that night - and had a good view of the stage. There were plenty of staff...More

Excellent viewing from every very comfortable seat- you feel closer to the stage in the circle than in the first 12 rows if any stalls. Tickets are much more reasonsably priced than in Leeds or other York theares. Just a lovely place to be watching...More

This was truly stunning. Gifted, harmonised actor/musicians drew us into their world. I didn't want to leave. Go and see it!

What a lovely little theatre. All staff very friendly and didn't look like there was a bad seat in the house. Decided to stay after a matinee performance for cake and coffee, and the quality and atmosphere in the cafe was excellent. Highly recommend this...More

I thought the last review here was incredibly negative and totally unfounded! We are visitors to York and booked this in advance of our visit. What a lovely theatre! Seems to have been very lovingly restored too. We really enjoyed the production too, weren't familiar...More

My first visit to YTR since its £6m redevelopment. Not a memorable evening, I'm afraid to say. The play, an adaptation of The Tenant of Wildfell Hall, was distinctly average; not helped by weak-voiced actress Phoebe Pryce (playing Helen Graham) finding it necessary to shout...More

A wonderful venue that blends old and new, the Theatre Royal is one of the two main theatres in York. I was here to watch a matinée performance of the Tenant of Wildfell Hall. It was a good production, but I felt the latter half...More

I have seen 4 previous productions of this moving show and this was the best. Layton Williams who plays Angel is brilliant. The part is always played by a talented actor however the dynamic energy he brings to the role with the subtly of his...More

Such a skilled troupe - all could sing, dance and play at lest one musical instrument. They brought out all the humour, and turned on the pathos of this classic tale of loves and lives lost though timidity. "Roxanne" with a broad, smiley and almost...More

The Studio seating is in the shape of a "U" - that is seating on three sides, each side has three tiered rows with a further row of 8 seats on the left hand side. Row A (normally 26 seats max) is on the flat level, so is... More
