About
Holy Trinity Goodramgate has the air of a hidden treasure. It stands in a small, secluded, leafy churchyard, with the Minster towering behind, tucked away behind Goodramgate - one of York's busiest shopping streets. To visit, you pass through an 18th-century archway tacked on to buildings that served as artisans' workshops in the 14th century. The church itself is full of character. The floors and arcades are charmingly uneven. Light filters through the windows, illuminating honey-coloured stone. The east window especially has marvellous stained glass that was donated in the early 1470s by the Reverend John Walker, rector of the church. On sunny days, transient gems of coloured light are scattered on the walls, and various Medieval faces stare out from the windows.

A true hidden gem! Look out for wooden mice!
Holy Trinity is a very beautiful 800 year old church and truly a hidden gem. We were greeted warmly as we entered and were offered a free guided tour but we chose to walk around on our own. They no longer hold services here but it's still consecrated ground. We needed to find a church on the day we visited because we wanted to light a candle in memory of my Grandad whose birthday it would've been. Unfortunately you aren't able to do that here, however the lady very kindly suggested that we could light one of their candles instead. She fetched the lighter for us and my Mom lit a candle. The lady then let us into one of the pews so that we could have a private moment. The pews here are unlike any I've ever seen before. Instead of all being open and forward facing, they are enclosed in square booths with a seat all around the edge and they have little locking doors on them. We were allowed to sit there for as long as we liked and then we let ourselves out and continued to explore. I was delighted to spot a little wooden mouse on the floor and then I saw another sitting on a wall and another! I asked and they are there for kids (and big kids!) to spot. Apparently there are 10 altogether and they are all wearing little hats. If they spot all 10 they get a prize. The hats get changed over ever so often. When we visited they were all wearing tiny hard hats to represent archeology. Sadly, they no longer sell the mice but I'm determined to buy one from somewhere to remind me of this church. This church is a very special place. I'm very spiritual and it's something I felt here rather than something that can be put into words. We left a donation on the way out. The volunteers are such kind people. We could've chosen to go to other churches or the Minster but something led us here and I'm so glad it did. If you're only going to visit one church in York, I can't recommend this one highly enough. Next time I have an opportunity to visit York, I'll definitely come back here and I'll be sure to visit the gardens next time too.

    Unique hidden gem
Set in a little oasis of calm just off a busy shopping area is this hidden gem of York. Entering from the street into a beautifully maintained churchyard which if it hadn’t have been raining i imagine would be a lovely place to sit and relax. The church itself is so unique with its box pews and its interesting layout. There is so much history here and you can lose track of time discovering all this church has to offer. Keep an eye out for the little wooden mice. Staffed by really helpful, friendly and enthusiastic volunteers. You always get a warm welcome here.

    Unique
No longer a functioning church but is a Grade 1 historic building dating back to the twelfth century. Has undergone much renovation, but its character remains unchanged. To see how parishioners were boxed in for services is quite an eye opener as is its architecture. Guides are always available to explain the church history and the building itself. Well worth a visit, although dates and times are limited.

    Quaint and interesting
We were lucky enough to see a play "Midsummer Nights Dream" (performed by a local company) at this quaint and pretty little 18th century church. This church has one of the best examples of boxed pews which would have been used by the families who worshipped here. Therefore, it was a rather unique and unusual setting for a Shakespeare play but a very worthwhile and enjoyable experience. The play was jolly good too!!

So we’ll preserved, a church which takes you back in time.
Even for the none religious, something to interest the historically minded, the church has barely changed, with its box pews and uneven wavy flagstone floors.
Plenty to look, and wonder at, sadly at the time I visited the guide book was not on sale, but the leaflet gives an insight into the history of this splendid Church.

Thank you, to the volunteers who allow this church to open to the public…. If you visit please donate…. So they can carry on preserving our history.

Built in the 1400s this ancient church is a gem particularly the 1470 stained-glass windows. It is also where Anne Lister (1791-1840) of Shibden Hall, Halifax, took sacrament with Ann Walker at Easter 1834 to seal their union. BBC 1 TV's "Gentleman Jack" broadcast in 2019. Highly recommended for an hour's visit.

Never mind the Minster - this is surely the most beautiful church in York. (Okay, the minster's lovely too, but in a splendid way rather than in a hidden gem way like this). Peaceful, beautiful and with a feeling of reverence, this is not filled with tourists and is manned by volunteers who have huge amounts of knowledge about the building and about the era of Christian worship in which it is steeped. Come and sit in the tranquility as the candlelight washes over you; feel the centuries of people who have worshipped and prayed here and marvel at this understated beauty.

Lovely little church and so old. The very rare (these days) box pews are very well made but unfortunately sagging due to subsidence but that give them a charm all of their own. This is the church that was used in real life of, and in the TV drama about, the diarist and businesswoman Anne Lister of Shibden Hall, Halifax. Drama is 'Gentleman Jack' and stars the amazing Northern (England) actress Suranne Jones.

this may be the loveliest church I have ever visited. The church is hidden down one of two alleys and is always an oasis of calm amidst the tourist bustle of York which can get a bit trying. If you see nothing else in York visiting this church is a must

As so many others have probably said, this is a hidden gem, tucked away in a busy area but with a real air of separation and peacefulness.

Whenever we visit York we go to as many churches as we can and this one is a little gem.

The stained glass is lovely and some of it has really interesting back stories.

The outdoor benches are a real asset and the churchyard is beautiful with lovely flowers growing.

Being a huge fan of Anne Lister and Gentleman Jack, I was determined to find the church where Anne and Ann sealed their union together. It wasn't the easiest place to find as it was right in the middle of shops. It was a quaint little church and very peaceful. Entry is free but donations are welcomed to help with the upkeep of the church. If you want to pay a visit, be sure to check opening times as I believe they are shut a few days a week. Nice little visit.

Hidden in town, right behind the White Swan, off Goodramgate. The church is so quaint and full of history. The stone work and pews were pretty amazing. Loved that we could see our breath in there ... it was a reminder of what people had to go through even for church. They have a donation box plan on a couple / few £ (or a contactless card). You will want to help preserve these buildings and the care that goes into them.
