Holy Trinity is a very beautiful 800 year old church and truly a hidden gem. We were greeted warmly as we entered and were offered a free guided tour but we chose to walk around on our own. They no longer hold services here but it's still consecrated ground. We needed to find a church on the day we visited because we wanted to light a candle in memory of my Grandad whose birthday it would've been. Unfortunately you aren't able to do that here, however the lady very kindly suggested that we could light one of their candles instead. She fetched the lighter for us and my Mom lit a candle. The lady then let us into one of the pews so that we could have a private moment. The pews here are unlike any I've ever seen before. Instead of all being open and forward facing, they are enclosed in square booths with a seat all around the edge and they have little locking doors on them. We were allowed to sit there for as long as we liked and then we let ourselves out and continued to explore. I was delighted to spot a little wooden mouse on the floor and then I saw another sitting on a wall and another! I asked and they are there for kids (and big kids!) to spot. Apparently there are 10 altogether and they are all wearing little hats. If they spot all 10 they get a prize. The hats get changed over ever so often. When we visited they were all wearing tiny hard hats to represent archeology. Sadly, they no longer sell the mice but I'm determined to buy one from somewhere to remind me of this church. This church is a very special place. I'm very spiritual and it's something I felt here rather than something that can be put into words. We left a donation on the way out. The volunteers are such kind people. We could've chosen to go to other churches or the Minster but something led us here and I'm so glad it did. If you're only going to visit one church in York, I can't recommend this one highly enough. Next time I have an opportunity to visit York, I'll definitely come back here and I'll be sure to visit the gardens next time too.

Set in a little oasis of calm just off a busy shopping area is this hidden gem of York. Entering from the street into a beautifully maintained churchyard which if it hadn’t have been raining i imagine would be a lovely place to sit and relax. The church itself is so unique with its box pews and its interesting layout. There is so much history here and you can lose track of time discovering all this church has to offer. Keep an eye out for the little wooden mice. Staffed by really helpful, friendly and enthusiastic volunteers. You always get a warm welcome here.

No longer a functioning church but is a Grade 1 historic building dating back to the twelfth century. Has undergone much renovation, but its character remains unchanged. To see how parishioners were boxed in for services is quite an eye opener as is its architecture. Guides are always available to explain the church history and the building itself. Well worth a visit, although dates and times are limited.

We were lucky enough to see a play "Midsummer Nights Dream" (performed by a local company) at this quaint and pretty little 18th century church. This church has one of the best examples of boxed pews which would have been used by the families who worshipped here. Therefore, it was a rather unique and unusual setting for a Shakespeare play but a very worthwhile and enjoyable experience. The play was jolly good too!!
