No visit to York is complete without a stroll along part of the 2 miles of historic walls that have protected the city for nearly 2000 years. The walls are completely free to walk, however bespoke guided tours can be booked with your own personal tour guide, meeting you at a time and place to suit you, and showing you the extensive hidden history to be found along the walls.

We walked the walls from Fulford road anti-ClockWise to the Minster with two small children 4&5. The children found it very interesting and enjoyed running along the walls and pretending to be defending them. It was a wonderful introduction to medieval history. We also stopped...More

This was one of my favorite things we did in England. Great views and history and you walk the city walls!

Enjoyable, historic and interesting. I went alone, not on a tour but it's a great way to see the city. Would be good if there was a little more information but generally a fantastic must-do while in York!

As a York resident, for many years I ignored the walls - they didn't seem relevant to my city centre visits when I needed to shop or collect something from the centre. Big mistake. The city walls are fantastic, not only connecting us to the...More

This is a good walk but make sure you allow a few hours. Having visited Chester recently these walls appeared to be longer and higher in parts. However there are areas not covered by the wall (gaps). Historically there areas were rivers or swamps and...More

Superb walk around the old city walls, and it's all totally free. Give yourself a couple of hours to stroll round these ancient walls and take in the views around the city, and if you want a break, there are plenty of places to stop...More

York's city walls are free, easy to navigate, and offer a fantastic view of the city and surroundings. There are flights of steps to climb up and down to access each section of them, but once you're up they provide a great viewing platform that...More

We never got the feeling like we could fall. There are high walls or fences and solid footing. If it's just being high, I think 20-30 feet at the most is it.

I am a tourist, and so cannot answer your question but York is a highly organised destination and so would be suprised if a German speaking tour was not available
