- Peter RDartford, United Kingdom1,303 contributionsLarge railway stationThe station is spread out over quite a large area and the walk from your platform can be quite a distance. Luckily if you have heavy luggage or problems walking there are lifts, as the stairs are quite steep. The station itself has some amazing architecture. Lots of places to get food and drinks.Visited November 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 28 November 2023
- Norm9 contributionsExcellent passenger assistance from LNER railway. The Passenger Assistance provided by LNER at York station was excellent. The assistance was on the train as soon as it arrived looking for us. They had our coach seting. On the reverse journey they met us, took us to the train, loaded our luggage and made sure we were OK. Excellent.Visited March 2024Travelled with familyWritten 3 April 2024
- BraindamagedbaronNewark-on-Trent, United Kingdom1,502 contributionsNineteenth century in the twenty firstYork is the home of The National Railway Museum and as such the city deserves a station befitting of the place. It probably got it when the station was originally built, now, more than a century later, the station doesn't really fit the contemporary needs of the thousands of passengers that pass through. It's a perfectly serviceable station and it still works, though it needs updating.Visited January 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 16 April 2024
- Graham BBarnstaple, United Kingdom142 contributionsYork is it to remember a memory not forgottenThe city of York hold a great atmosphere of love and affection for a great city. The reason why I say this is that when my Wife and I got married this was our wedding destination or honeymoon for aweek, 40 years later we still revisit the old haunting ground the atmosphere and the history of York. When we started having children we took our three girls to York on our special week of remembering our wedding day.. My girls have been grown up and havingchildren with their. But I’m happy to say that my Wife and I I saw very happy with your the city of honour wedding honeymoon.. Your cousin hasn’t changed in the last 40 years the streets are still the samefor 1000 years ago and that is the whole mystery of York but in this modern age York still hold on to its pro history. You can visit Yorkminster a great place of worship we were there when the roof of the cathedral burnt away and we return to see it replaced and once more stands in its own glory to God . For those that have Railway steam in their blood you can visit the National rowing Museum which is only a short distance from town but if you are a fitness ability and there is a train which is very cheap and reasonable there is a host of places you can go to Restaurants by the river or in town and Montour in York if you use it as a base and to return to each night there is plenty to see outlying countryside, you could take a train to Manchester Edinburgh which we’ve done Liverpool to Crosby beach and look at Anthony Gormley figurative statues which stand in the Sea and revealed twice a day as the tideretreat. You’re looking for a day or a week the city of York will not let you down as it stands proud proud and surrounded by the old city walls.. . Visit to York is a bit like working on a puzzle all the bits are are there all you have to do is put them in the right place. Have a great day or if you prefer have a great week at the city of York goodbye..Visited August 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 7 May 2024
- Black Cat159 contributionsNice station with things to doYork station is around 10 minutes walk away from the centre of York. It has a few cafes and a few shops to look around and lots of platforms with trains that can take you to most of the UK. The staff here are really nice and I enjoy travelling to and from this station.Visited February 2024Travelled with familyWritten 27 July 2024
- Jim GSaint Louis, Missouri774 contributionsPleasant English Railway StationWe began and ended our visit to York at York Railway Station. It is a fairly large and busy station dating from the 1870s that is easily accessed from any part of York. Although we did not take advantage of them, shops and a Starbucks cater to travelers’ needs. Note the historical plaques documenting its damage during an air raid in 1942 and its refurbishment. Our time spent at York Railway Station was a pleasant part of our trip.Visited June 2024Travelled with familyWritten 21 September 2024
- pubdog33Camberley, United Kingdom107 contributionsLNER TICKET STAFF AND FIRST CLASS LOUNGEI wanted to change my return journey so a helpful lady changed my ticket and we upgraded to 1st class for return back to London. Next day, arrived at first class lounge to be met by the same lady who remembered us. She was very helpful and friendly and very efficient - stupidly did not get her name but she had blonde hair, lovely perfume and she had the air of someone that might have previously been cabin crew which is why she was so good!Visited September 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 26 September 2024
- Chris MWetherby, United Kingdom1,676 contributionsBusy rail station - improved platform access required for suitcasesThe last time that we used this station we were travelling to Aberdeen and returning from Inverness. It is a large and busy station. The taxi drop-off point is under cover as is the walk to the LNER 1st Class Lounge on Platform 3. There are no ticket barriers at this station. The lounge provides a warm place to wait for your train. The link between platforms is either by subway accessed by steps and lift or by an overhead footbridge. The lifts are quite small, but they were out of order for some platforms anyway. Therefore transferring cases involved stairs, whichever route was selected. There are ample arrival/departure boards and the departure platform was marked with positions for each coach on the train, to enable reserved seats to located easily. On return the station was extremely busy, which involved stairs for suitcases again. The pre-booked pick-up car park has a short waiting period limit, which can cause issues if trains are late. Overall, a busy but functional station providing travel across the UK, but it would have been good to have serviceable lifts, or better still an easier alternative.Visited August 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 27 September 2024

The station is very big with bidirectional main lines and bay platforms at both ends. There is a central footbridge and lifts but give yourself time if arriving from say Scarborough and need to cross over for a connection to London. Plenty of eating outlets, good signage and now served by a mixture of older and brand new trains. Direct access to the National Railway Museum is an added bonus. Toilets on the station are now free

Today (14-01-2019) at 14:25 I was in the York trainstation, rushing to get my train.. I only had a few minutes left and had to collect my ticket at the machine. While arriving at the machines outside it said: out of order. So I went quickly to the National Railway stand where a woman (name LORRAINE) was sitting behind the desk. I asked her if she could help me to get my tickets because my train was leaving soon and the machines were out of order. She said that I had to go inside the National Railway service to collect my ticket while I asked if SHE please could help me. I asked 2 times politely and still she was not helping me. Not very helpful and not a good service.

We visited York railway station whilst on route to the National Railway museum (NRM) with our grandson on a midweek day during the October school half term break. Arriving from London just after 11:30AM by train, we took the short walk over the station footbridge and out of the station to the NRM.
You cannot fail to be impressed with the structure of the station with its massive semi glazed roof supported on iron columns and multiple platforms. The impressive covered way at the main entrance (similar to those at Darlington and Newcastle), harks back to a time when intending passengers would arrive in horse drawn carriages and be sheltered from the elements as they entered the station.
But for all its history, the station is not set in a past glories time warp but has a more contemporary feel about it with its modern day commercial outlets selling refreshments and other consumables it looks very well cared for and maintained. The station is well placed if you wish to visit the city of York with the centre being an easy 10 minute walk across the river Ouse. The station has many train movements passing through it to multiple destinations around the Great Britain and has an air of expectancy about it.

One of the great railway stations in Britain. For anyone interested in railway architecture or the achievements of the Victorians this is a must see destination. Still a great hub in our sadly depleted railway network

My disabled son (18) loves trains and this station has lots of them! He enjoyed theor coming and going and we spent roughly 2-3 hours there each day. Thankfully Costa Coffee is in the station and has good viewing from their windows, but be aware that it is up a couple of flights of stairs! (See separate review) There is free access and lots of different food outlets to chose from on most platforms. The waiting rooms are glass so again, you are able to watch trains without getting cold! He has a great time there!

A quick visit on Friday & Saturday 21/22nd May 2021. One of the most beautiful stations I have ever visited. Parked in the adjacent NCP which didn't feel very secure. If you walk to the end of the platform you can see yourself on a live YouTube feed as well!

So, huge signs by the tracks say Zone 8 (which is where Platform 11 is, whilst on the opposite side of the station, huge signs say Zone 11, which is where Platform 5 is. EVERY platform has this conflict. How many passengers have missed trains because of this insane system (partucularly those who are neuro-diverse or have English as a second language)?

This is a large station full of character. There are still original Victorian features which are stunning. Above you there is a steel roof structure which resembles the spine of an animal. There are old foorbridges, clocks and internal buildings. If you like train stations, this one is Full of Character.

This is the first time, in a long while of travelling to York Station, on route to a wedding. The platforms had a number of assistants ready and waiting to help everyone.
Unfortunately, due to incidents on railway lines, a number of trains were delayed, yet the staff managed to jeep everyone calm.
The taxi rank outside is great when you need to get to places or are unsure of your way around

We arrived early for our trip back to Edinburgh to be told that our train was cancelled. We hadn’t been informed by trainline who I booked through or Transpennine who were the rail company. We were advised to go to the ticket office which we did. I would like to say a big thank you to the customer service assistant who rebooked on an earlier train on LNER. Thank you once again

Is it possible to access the station 24/7 from the Scarborough Bridge footpath through the Short Stay Car Park. I have heard there is a gate that is locked at 11:00 pm. I need to walk to the station at 5:30 am using the Bridge footpath. Will gate be unlocked at that time.

Trains run late and early but the station might be closed for a few hours at night but certainly not for too long. I’d ring them to ask.

Next week we are coming to york railway museum , but want to go to the station to see Tornado arrive, will we be able to buy a platform ticket to see it up close
Written 7 December 2019
I don’t think you need a platform ticket anymore. I think you can just wander on to the platform as there are no barriers as far as I can see. Will probably be busy though!
Written 8 December 2019
How large is this train station? I'm planning to take a train their from Leicester and will have ~12 minutes to get to a train to Edinburgh. I haven't bought the tickets yet because I'm nervous that is not enough time. Please let me know if anyone thinks this is sufficient. Thanks!
Written 2 November 2019
It should be, if you book online with National Rail it should allow sufficient time to get the connection.

Hi how do I get from platform 1 to 9
Bit nervous. Not used to catching trains
Written 21 October 2019
There are a couple options. First one is to use a lift or stairs and then use the subway to walk to the platform you need again either by using the stairs or lift. It is easy with plenty of signs to guide you.
