York's relationship with the River Ouse is complicated; providing the city with a charming waterfront, but also occasionally threatening, often severe, flooding. The walk alongside however, thankfully, offers no such complications. The stretch within the city's walls is, perhaps unsurprisingly, the busiest. The eastern part of this section is lined with a number of bars, cafes and restaurants. Of particular... More

The centre of York is such a busy tourist honey pot that it is nice to know that we can escape to the riverside for a relaxing stroll whenever we visit. Depending on the season, there are ducks and geese to see and the occasional boat passing by, but not so many as to make the river too busy. It... More

We were lucky when we visited York as the day was chilly but full of autumn sunshine. The walk along the River Ouse is such a lovely way to see the City, with lots of boats sailing by & many good cafes & eateries to call in should you want to. Such an enjoyable & rewarding experience being able to... More

The river Ouse runs through York. On the river are small power boats you can hire, there is a boating club for rowers. You can take a guided boat tour along the river too. York isn't short of places to eat and drink, this is certainly so along the river bank. The walks aren't always continuous so you may need... More

York has a wonderful riverside walk on both sides of the river. They are calming and offer wonderful views and have a great selection of waterside eateries and pubs to watch the world go by. TIP: zig zag your way across York's bridges to take in different views and aspects ..... very rewarding

We discover this promenade while trying to find the easiest path between Old York and the Railway Museum . The Ouse River is quite enjoyable to follow and it seems to be used by many rowers . The banks are well utilized as there are places to sit and eat , cycle paths and easy access to streets and public... More

This is a very relaxing walk especially in the summer and there are plenty of pubs on the riverside that also offer outdoor seating so you can sit in the sun right next to the river. There is also an ice cream van here in the summer and there is the opportunity to go on a river cruise. The boats... More

We usually do the river walk from one bridge to another but not on this trip the Ouse has burst its banks, AGAIN. This seems to happen several times a year but thanks to the flood defences the only place that gets hit is The Kings Arms pub. Have abeer in here if you come to York, they've a scale... More

Lovely walk especially if the sun is out. Plenty of places to stop and sit or have a drink and watch river boats.

We walked from Fulford into the city, along the river. It is very popular with families, couples and cyclists. A good path surface ideal for prams, bicycles and wheelchairs.
